What Echoes of Sekigahara adds
The official PlayStation Store description calls Echoes of Sekigahara “a new story expansion into Atsu’s past.” It takes players into “a whole new area of Ezo,” adds information about the Battle of Sekigahara and introduces a new weapon type for combat. That makes it a narrative expansion rather than a cosmetic pack or a small equipment drop.

The expansion is part of the broader Ghost of Yōtei content offering. The Complete Edition also includes Most Wanted, described as a combat-survival mode, and Ghost of Yōtei Legends, an online co-op mode. Those extras should not be confused with the story content in Echoes of Sekigahara: the expansion is the Atsu-focused campaign addition, while Legends is the explicitly online component.

There is no authoritative number to quote. Neither the official PlayStation material nor Sucker Punch’s announcement supplies a completion-time estimate for Echoes of Sekigahara. Any exact hour count presented as an official fact would therefore be invented.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Actual playtime will depend on several choices:
- Story pace: Players who move directly between objectives will finish sooner than players who stop to investigate every location.
- Exploration: The expansion adds a new area of Ezo, so time spent learning its routes and looking for optional content will affect the total.
- Difficulty: Higher challenge can make encounters take longer, while assistance options and practice tools may shorten retries.
- Optional activities: Side objectives, combat practice and other non-critical activities can extend a playthrough beyond the main path.
When third-party playtime estimates appear, treat them as estimates from a particular play style, version and completion target—not as a promise from Sony. A “story only” figure, a completionist figure and a first-playthrough figure measure different things. Until an estimate is independently documented, the most accurate answer is simply that the official duration is unannounced.
PS5 and PS5 Pro requirements
Console compatibility
Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 title. PlayStation’s game page says it launched exclusively on PS5 on October 2, 2025, and supports PS5 Pro. The Complete Edition store page likewise lists PS5 as its platform. There is no PS4 version identified in the official material for this release.
That means the practical hardware requirement for Echoes of Sekigahara is a PS5 console. A PS5 Pro is supported, but it is not presented as mandatory; the expansion is listed for the standard PS5 platform as well.
Release and patch timing
Sucker Punch’s PlayStation Blog announcement gives October 1, 2026 as the arrival date for the new narrative expansion and the other Complete Edition content. Patch v2.0 is listed for October 1 globally, with October 2, 2026 shown for some territories, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Storefront release times can therefore differ by region even when the announced date appears to be the same.
Rank #2
- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Check the date shown in your own PlayStation Store before assuming the content is available. If the expansion is not visible at midnight in your region, a territory-specific release schedule may be the reason rather than a hardware problem.
Account and internet requirements
Downloading the expansion or the required game patch requires a PlayStation account and an internet connection. The online connection is needed for acquisition and updating; it does not turn the single-player story expansion into an online-only product. After the content and patch are installed, the story component can be approached as offline content.
The official information does not state the download size, required free storage or a minimum connection speed. Keep enough space for the game’s update process and follow the console’s own storage warning if it appears, rather than relying on an unverified size figure.
Do you need PlayStation Plus?
No PlayStation Plus subscription is required for the offline, single-player Echoes of Sekigahara experience. You still need an internet connection to download the expansion and any required patch, but Plus and internet access are different requirements.

- Battle against over 50 players simultaneously in a massive multiplayer playground.
- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
- Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.
- Bike, ski, snowboard, or wingsuit through a seamless open world in Career mode or multiplayer events.
- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer. That specifically matters for Ghost of Yōtei Legends, which the Complete Edition describes as an online co-op mode. If you only intend to play the Atsu story expansion, you can treat Plus as optional. If you intend to join Legends sessions, arrange an active PlayStation Plus subscription and a working online connection.
| Activity | PlayStation Plus required? | Internet required? |
|---|---|---|
| Download Echoes of Sekigahara | No | Yes |
| Play the installed single-player expansion offline | No | No, after installation |
| Play Ghost of Yōtei Legends online co-op | Yes | Yes |
| Install the required game update | No | Yes |
Difficulty and accessibility options
The store listing does not present the expansion as locked to one fixed challenge level. It lists Adjustable Difficulty (Advanced) along with several assistance features. The exact effect of each setting is best judged in the game, but the published options indicate that players can tune both combat challenge and the amount of on-screen guidance.
Adjustable Difficulty (Advanced)
This option is intended for players who want more control over challenge than a single preset provides. It lets you adjust the experience rather than treating difficulty as an all-or-nothing choice.

Simplified quick-time events reduce the complexity of timed prompts. They are useful if rapid button sequences are uncomfortable, inconsistent or simply distract from the story.

Control and tutorial reminders
Control reminders help when you return after a break or are learning a new weapon. Tutorial reminders can provide context again instead of assuming that you remember every system from the base game.
Practice mode
Practice mode gives you a lower-pressure way to work on combat techniques. It can be especially helpful when the expansion’s new weapon type is unfamiliar.
Pausing during offline play
The listing also notes game pausing for offline play. That is important for players who need to interrupt a session without leaving an active encounter running.
These settings are not mutually exclusive. Use the combination that fits your needs, and change assistance as your familiarity with the combat system develops.

Can you use an existing Ghost of Yōtei save?
The official store material explicitly supports manual saving: “You can create manual save points that allow you to return to the game exactly where you left off.” That gives you control over when to preserve progress, but it does not answer every transfer question.
Sony’s published information does not state that an existing base-game save is automatically imported into Echoes of Sekigahara. It also does not document compatibility between saves from different disc regions and DLC regions. Do not assume either behavior until the game itself confirms it.
Safer preparation before starting the expansion
- Update Ghost of Yōtei and install the required patch before launching the expansion.
- Create a fresh manual save in the base game and keep it separate from older saves.
- If your console setup provides a backup option, preserve that manual save before making changes.
- Launch the expansion and follow its own prompts for selecting or creating save data.
- After the first session, make another manual save and verify that it appears in the game’s save list before deleting or replacing older files.
If the expansion does not show your expected progress, do not overwrite the original save while troubleshooting. Confirm that you are using the same PlayStation account and game edition, then check the game’s save-management screen. Region-specific compatibility remains unconfirmed in the available official documentation.

Which edition or setup makes sense?
If you already own Ghost of Yōtei
Use the existing PS5 installation, sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the game, install the required update and obtain Echoes of Sekigahara through the edition or add-on path shown for your account. Make a manual save before beginning, because automatic transfer has not been confirmed.
If you are buying the game for the first time
The Complete Edition is the version that bundles the base game with the expansion, Most Wanted and Ghost of Yōtei Legends. Choose it if you want the story expansion and the additional modes together. Remember that Legends is the part that requires PlayStation Plus for online play.
If you only want the story
The relevant content is Echoes of Sekigahara. You will still need the PS5 game environment, a PlayStation account and an internet connection for downloading, but not a Plus subscription for offline play.
Troubleshooting common problems
The expansion is not visible
- Confirm that the PS5 is signed into the account that owns the game or add-on.
- Check the PlayStation Store listing for your territory and the October 1/October 2, 2026 regional timing.
- Install patch v2.0 and restart the game after the update finishes.
- Verify that the edition or add-on shown on your account includes Echoes of Sekigahara.
The download will not start
- Check the internet connection and available console storage.
- Wait for any base-game update to complete before starting the expansion download.
- Do not interrupt the console while it is applying the required patch.
Your save is missing
- Check that you are using the same PlayStation account as the original save.
- Look for the manual save in the game’s own save-management screen.
- Keep the original file intact while checking edition and region details.
- Do not assume a disc from one region and DLC from another will share save data; the official material does not confirm that compatibility.
Online co-op will not connect
- Confirm that PlayStation Plus is active.
- Check the internet connection and ensure the game is fully updated.
- Remember that this requirement applies to Legends online co-op, not to the offline story expansion.
Bottom line on the Ghost of Yōtei DLC
Echoes of Sekigahara is a PS5-only, single-player story expansion focused on Atsu’s past, a new part of Ezo, the Battle of Sekigahara and a new weapon. Sony has not published a playtime number, so the honest expectation is variable length rather than a promised hour count. You need an account and internet access to download it, but not PlayStation Plus to play the installed story offline. Difficulty can be tailored with advanced adjustment and assistance options, and manual saves are supported. Because automatic save import and cross-region compatibility are not documented, preserve a manual backup and follow the game’s own save prompts when you begin.
