Ghost Song is a moody, exploration-led 2D action-adventure whose strongest draw is its lonely science-fiction atmosphere. Reviews point to a real divide: its art, mystery and heated-blaster combat can appeal, but cumbersome traversal, imprecise combat and repeated backtracking may frustrate players who want a tightly responsive Metroidvania.
What is Ghost Song?
Released in 2022 by developer Old Moon, Ghost Song follows a long-dormant Deadsuit awakening on the desolate moon Lorian. The single-player 2D action-adventure combines atmospheric exploration with Metroidvania-style progression: you explore caverns and abandoned facilities, meet other stranded characters, uncover secrets, and gain weapons and abilities that open up parts of the map. The official Steam listing describes the PC version as single-player; the Nintendo US listing offers a digital Switch edition and says it is supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch. These listings establish digital editions, not a physical Switch release.

Combat has a distinctive rhythm: sustained blaster fire heats the weapon barrel, empowering melee attacks. Suit and blaster modules add options as you progress. That design gives the game a combat idea beyond simply firing at enemies, though whether it feels satisfying depends in part on how much you enjoy its controls and encounters.
What do Ghost Song reviews praise?
Atmosphere, art and mystery
Positive critic excerpts collected by Metacritic praise the atmosphere, art, story and exploration. The game’s official descriptions also emphasize isolation, mystery and exploration, making its desolate moon setting central to its appeal. If you want a science-fiction adventure that feels lonely and encourages you to look for secrets, that mood is a major reason to consider it.

A combat mechanic with a clear identity
PC Gamer reviewer Dashiell Wood singled out the heat mechanic as an engaging way to alternate between blaster fire and melee. Wood also praised the art direction’s sense of isolation and decay and the variety offered by suit and weapon modules. Those strengths help explain why a mixed review can still see promise in the game’s foundations: Wood wrote, “There is still a glimmer of hope in Ghost Song‘s foundations” in his November 9, 2022 PC review.
What are the main criticisms?
Controls and combat feel
Wood’s PC Gamer review is sharply critical of the controls and traversal, describing them as cumbersome and imprecise. It also takes issue with combat hitboxes and dodge behavior. These are the reviewer’s judgments about the PC version, not proof that every player or platform will have the same experience, but they matter if precise movement and responsive combat are your main priorities.

For PC players, Wood notes that a compatible controller can address the keyboard-aiming limitation discussed in the review, and Steam lists full controller support. A controller is therefore worth considering if you prefer gamepad aiming; the available evidence does not establish that any particular model has been tested.
Backtracking, bosses and save points
Wood also argues that the map feels more linear than the genre label might lead players to expect, with substantial backtracking through similar-looking corridors. In his assessment, repeated boss fights and the placement of save points can make deaths tedious. This combination is worth weighing if you expect a highly interconnected map, consistently novel routes, or forgiving recovery after a difficult encounter.

How do the review scores compare?
The figures below come from different platforms and measure different things; critic scores and player ratings should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Source | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | 84% positive from 990 user reviews | Steam user-review snapshot accessed October 8, 2026; live total and percentage can change. Steam listing |
| PlayStation Store | 4.41 out of 5 from 542 global player ratings | PlayStation Store snapshot accessed October 8, 2026; a separate rating pool that can change. PlayStation Store listing |
| Steam listing | 79 critic score | Aggregator score displayed on Steam when accessed October 8, 2026; distinct from user ratings. Steam listing |
| PC Gamer | 49 review score | Dashiell Wood’s PC review verdict, published November 9, 2022. Review |
The positive Steam and PlayStation user snapshots sit alongside a notably negative PC Gamer review and more favorable critic excerpts on Metacritic. Taken together, they show a range of reactions rather than one definitive consensus: some players value the atmosphere and adventure, while the PC Gamer critique highlights friction in moment-to-moment play.

Who is Ghost Song best suited to?
Ghost Song is a better prospect if you put mood, visual style, secrets and gradual ability-based exploration ahead of flawless control precision. It is a riskier choice if you are sensitive to awkward movement, repeated encounters, similar corridors or long walks back after a death.
- Consider it if: you want a lonely sci-fi setting, atmospheric art, story mystery, hidden areas and a blaster-to-melee combat hook.
- Think carefully if: you expect consistently precise platforming, especially responsive dodging, highly varied traversal or minimal backtracking.
- On PC: consider a compatible controller if keyboard aiming is a concern; this is a general input suggestion, not a recommendation of a tested model.
Where can you play Ghost Song?
The cited official store listings cover the PC edition on Steam and a digital Nintendo Switch edition in the US. Nintendo says the Switch version is supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch. The PlayStation Store also has a listing, but the cited rating snapshot alone does not establish wider platform availability, performance differences or edition-specific features.
