What is Ghost of Yōtei?
Ghost of Yōtei is a PlayStation 5 game that launched worldwide on October 2, 2025. Set at Japan’s northern edge in the 17th century, it tells a new story in the Ghost setting rather than continuing Jin Sakai’s story. PlayStation’s official game page says Jin does not feature in this game, so newcomers do not need to treat it as his direct next chapter. Does the world feel worth exploring?
Sucker Punch said the design goal was to give players a stronger sense of freedom in an untamed wilderness. In its October 23, 2025 technical deep dive, the development team wrote: “Coming off of what we achieved with Ghost of Tsushima, the project vision for Ghost of Yōtei put a stronger emphasis on a player’s sense of freedom in an untamed wilderness.” That is a statement of intent, not a guarantee that every player will experience the world as more open-ended. The setting helps give that ambition a clear identity: the game moves its story to Japan’s northern edge rather than simply revisiting the previous game’s landscape. Whether that change and the freer approach are enough to make the world feel fresh depends on how much novelty a player wants from an open-world action game.

How does the open-world formula hold up?
The strongest reservation in the available review coverage is familiarity. Tom’s Guide’s September 25, 2025 review praised the cinematic presentation while criticizing the conventional open-world framework. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not evidence of a broad critical consensus, but it identifies the central trade-off: Yōtei can feel assured and beautifully presented while still relying on structures players may recognize from other open-world games. Tom’s Guide’s review makes that tension explicit.
That familiarity is not automatically a flaw. Players looking for a distinctive setting, cinematic action-adventure presentation, and room to explore may find the execution more important than structural surprise. Players hoping for a fundamental reinvention of the open-world format may be less persuaded. The case for the game is strongest when its atmosphere and sense of place matter as much as mechanical novelty.

Sucker Punch discussed ray tracing and PSSR image upsampling for PS5 Pro in its technical deep dive. Those are studio-described technology features, not independent performance measurements; the cited material does not establish frame rates, resolution targets, or comparative test results. The game was announced for PS5, and the platform remains central to its presentation. Check the game’s current regional listing for specific edition and platform details.
What’s included in the Complete Edition?
The original release is the story campaign. PlayStation’s October 2, 2026 Complete Edition interview says that edition brings together the campaign, Ghost of Yōtei Legends multiplayer, the Most Wanted roguelike mode, and the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion. The Complete Edition interview describes those components; the US PlayStation Store listing gives patch v.2.0 timing as October 1, 2026 globally and October 2 in some territories. Availability and edition contents can vary by region, so check the listing for your market before buying.

Is Ghost of Yōtei worth it?
Ghost of Yōtei is easiest to recommend to PS5 players who want a polished, cinematic open-world adventure with a new protagonist, a striking northern Japanese setting, and an emphasis on freedom in the wilderness. Its main risk is that the underlying open-world structure may feel conventional; players who need major genre innovation should weigh that concern rather than assuming the new setting changes the formula. If you are comparing editions, distinguish the original campaign from the Complete Edition’s added multiplayer, roguelike mode, and narrative expansion.
