Gideon and Ensha in Elden Ring: Was the Roundtable Attack Ordered?

There is no confirmed answer that Gideon explicitly ordered Ensha to attack the Tarnished. Elden Ring does establish that Ensha is Gideon Ofnir’s adherent, that Ensha invades Roundtable Hold after the Tarnished obtains either half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion, and that Gideon comments on Ensha afterward. Those facts connect Gideon, Ensha, and the medallion, but they do not show a prior command. The most defensible reading is that Gideon wanted the medallion and Ensha may have acted to obtain it, yet Ensha’s decision to attack remains unconfirmed rather than established canon.

What the game actually shows

Ensha is normally encountered in Roundtable Hold as a silent figure associated with Sir Gideon Ofnir. Ensha does not provide an ordinary conversation that explains their assignment, motives, or chain of command. The character’s presence communicates a relationship, but not the terms of that relationship.

The relevant event begins when the Tarnished obtains either the right or left half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. Returning to Roundtable Hold after acquiring one of those halves causes Ensha to invade. The fight therefore occurs in a very specific place and at a very specific point in the quest: the player has obtained information or an object connected to the route toward the Consecrated Snowfield, and Ensha attacks inside the hub that is otherwise treated as a safe base.

After the invasion, Gideon has new dialogue concerning Ensha. His later conversation also turns to the secret medallions. The order of these conversations makes the connection conspicuous: Ensha attacks immediately after the player acquires a medallion half, then Gideon discusses the incident and the objects. What the sequence does not include is an on-screen instruction, a written order, a messenger scene, or a line that plainly says Gideon told Ensha to kill the Tarnished.

Who Ensha is in relation to Gideon

Ensha is presented as Gideon’s adherent or underling. That description matters because it makes Gideon a reasonable suspect when Ensha acts in a way that appears connected to Gideon’s interests. Ensha is not introduced as an unrelated invader who happens to choose Roundtable Hold. The character stands beside Gideon before the event, and Gideon reacts afterward.

At the same time, being an adherent does not automatically prove that every action is ordered by the leader. A subordinate can act on standing instructions, personal loyalty, self-interest, or an interpretation of what the leader wants. Elden Ring often leaves those distinctions unstated. The relationship supplies context for Ensha’s behavior, but it is not itself evidence of a specific command.

This distinction is especially important because Ensha is silent. There is no verified speech from Ensha explaining, “Gideon sent me,” nor is there a scene in which Gideon assigns the mission. The player must infer motive from placement, timing, and the characters’ later dialogue rather than from a direct statement.

Why obtaining either medallion half triggers the attack

The trigger is one of the strongest pieces of evidence in the sequence. Ensha does not invade merely because the Tarnished has progressed to a particular level or defeated a particular boss. The invasion is tied to possession of either half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. That makes the medallion the apparent target or catalyst.

Gideon’s interest in the medallions is also made clear by his follow-up conversation. The game thus provides a plausible motive: if Gideon wants information about the Haligtree or access to the hidden area reached with the complete medallion, an agent might try to take the piece from the Tarnished.

However, a trigger proves that the events are linked, not why the link exists. The game could be showing a planned retrieval, an opportunistic attack by Ensha, or a gameplay flag that represents knowledge spreading through Roundtable Hold. The medallion condition narrows the possibilities, but it does not identify who issued an instruction or what Ensha was told to do.

What Gideon’s post-invasion dialogue establishes

Gideon receives a new “About Ensha” conversation after the attack, followed by dialogue about the secret medallions. This confirms that he knows about the incident and that Ensha’s fate is relevant to him. It also reinforces that the medallion is part of the same narrative thread.

Knowledge after an event is not proof of authorization before it. Gideon could be responding to an action he expected, an action he encouraged without explicitly ordering, or an action Ensha took independently. His reaction has interpretive weight, but the available dialogue sequence does not supply a verified line that settles the question.

Exact wording matters here. Paraphrases of Gideon’s response circulate in guides and community discussions, but an unverified paraphrase should not be treated as a verbatim confession. Without a reliable transcript that contains an explicit instruction or acknowledgment of a prior order, the safest conclusion remains limited to what the scene visibly establishes.

Evidence versus interpretation

Question What the sequence establishes Certainty
Is Ensha connected to Gideon? Ensha is presented at Roundtable Hold as Gideon’s adherent or underling. Directly established by the character setup.
What causes the invasion? Obtaining either the right or left half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion and returning to Roundtable Hold. Directly established by the event trigger.
Where does Ensha attack? Inside Roundtable Hold. Directly established by the encounter.
Does Gideon know about Ensha afterward? Gideon gains follow-up dialogue about Ensha and then discusses the medallions. Directly established by the dialogue progression.
Did Gideon explicitly command the attack? No reviewed scene or verified line supplies a direct order. Unconfirmed.
Was Ensha trying to obtain the medallion for Gideon? The timing and Gideon’s interest make this a plausible explanation. Inference, not settled canon.

The strongest arguments for Gideon’s involvement

Ensha acts when the medallion becomes available

The timing is difficult to dismiss as random. The attack occurs precisely after the Tarnished acquires an item Gideon later discusses. If Ensha is watching the Tarnished or receiving information inside Roundtable Hold, the event can be read as an attempt to seize the newly obtained half before the Tarnished can use it.

Ensha serves Gideon’s interests

Ensha’s established association gives the attack a practical explanation. Gideon is an information-seeker who gathers knowledge about the demigods, the Tarnished, and routes through the Lands Between. A secret medallion that reveals a hidden path would fit those interests. Ensha could therefore be acting as Gideon’s operative even if the game never shows the instruction being delivered.

Gideon’s later conversation keeps the connection alive

If the attack were unrelated to Gideon, the post-invasion dialogue would have less narrative purpose. The fact that Gideon comments on Ensha and then addresses the medallions encourages the player to connect the events. That is intentional framing, but framing is still different from an explicit statement that Gideon ordered an assassination.

The strongest arguments for Ensha acting independently

No command is shown

The central limitation is simple: the game does not depict Gideon issuing the order. There is no direct exchange establishing the mission’s terms, no letter, and no confirmed line in which Gideon claims responsibility for sending Ensha. In a story that frequently relies on implication, the omission may be deliberate.

Adherence does not define motive

Ensha may be loyal to Gideon without receiving a specific assignment. A devoted follower could decide that taking the medallion would please or assist Gideon. That would explain the attack’s timing and the relationship while preserving Ensha’s personal agency.

The invasion may be an interpretation of a gameplay condition

The medallion trigger is meaningful in the narrative, but it is also implemented as a progression condition. The game does not explain how Ensha learns that the Tarnished has obtained a half, how quickly the information travels, or whether Gideon is monitoring the player. Those missing mechanics leave room for a designed encounter whose exact in-world logistics are intentionally vague.

How to see the sequence in your own playthrough

  1. Find one half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. Either the right half or the left half is sufficient; you do not need the complete medallion to trigger the event.
  2. Return to Roundtable Hold after obtaining the half. The invasion is tied to this return rather than occurring at the location where the half was found.
  3. Fight Ensha inside Roundtable Hold. The encounter changes the hub’s status temporarily and is the event that prompts Gideon’s new conversation.
  4. Speak with Gideon after the fight and select the newly available topic concerning Ensha, if it is presented in your dialogue options.
  5. Continue through the available conversation about the secret medallions. Treat the two dialogue subjects as connected evidence, not as a transcript of an order that the game never states.

This order of actions lets you verify the causal sequence in the game: medallion half first, invasion second, Gideon’s response afterward. It cannot reveal an unseen command, because the game does not provide one in the playable sequence.

What you should and should not claim

  • Safe claim: Ensha is Gideon’s adherent and attacks after the Tarnished obtains either medallion half.
  • Safe claim: Gideon discusses Ensha after the attack and is interested in the secret medallions.
  • Reasonable interpretation: Ensha may have tried to obtain the medallion for Gideon.
  • Also possible: Ensha acted independently, either from loyalty or personal judgment.
  • Unsupported as a fact: Gideon explicitly ordered Ensha to assassinate the Tarnished.
  • Unsupported as a quotation: Any supposed verbatim confession unless it has been checked against a reliable in-game dialogue transcript.

Using calibrated language is not a failure to answer the lore question. It reflects the difference between a sequence the game clearly stages and a motive it leaves for the player to reconstruct.

Why the ambiguity matters to Gideon’s character

Gideon’s identity is built around information, manipulation, and the appearance of control. The Ensha incident fits that characterization because it places him near a suspicious act without handing the player a clean confession. If he ordered the attack, he operates through a subordinate and avoids public responsibility. If he did not, his organization is loose enough for an adherent to act on perceived wishes. Either reading presents a Gideon who benefits from uncertainty.

The ambiguity also preserves Ensha as more than a disposable combat encounter. A direct order would reduce the event to a straightforward retrieval mission. Leaving the instruction unstated allows two ideas to coexist: Gideon clearly values the medallion, and Ensha may possess enough initiative to pursue that objective without being told. The game gives the player the relationship and the timing, then withholds the decisive sentence.

Verdict

Gideon may have wanted the Haligtree Secret Medallion, and Ensha’s position as his adherent makes it plausible that the attack served Gideon’s interests. The invasion’s trigger, location, and Gideon’s follow-up dialogue all support a connection. They do not, however, confirm that Gideon gave Ensha a prior order to attack or kill the Tarnished. The accurate answer is therefore: Gideon’s involvement is suggested, but a direct command is unconfirmed.
