Gigabyte M34WQ Review: Still a Great Ultrawide for Gaming and Work?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The Gigabyte M34WQ remains an excellent hybrid PC monitor when bought at a discount. Its 34-inch 3440×1440 IPS panel, 144Hz refresh rate, low input lag, broad viewing angles and integrated KVM make it unusually useful for a desktop-and-laptop setup. Low contrast, weak HDR and USB-C charging limited to 15W are the reasons not to pay premium 2026 pricing for it.

What the Gigabyte M34WQ is

The M34WQ is a flat 34-inch, 21:9 ultrawide in Gigabyte’s M-series, positioned between a gaming display and a productivity monitor. Its native resolution is 3440×1440, the panel is IPS, and maximum refresh rate is 144Hz. Gigabyte specifies 400-nit typical brightness, 1,000:1 typical contrast and 8-bit color. The full specification and KVM instructions are in the official user manual.

Feature Verified detail
Screen 34 inches, flat, 21:9
Resolution 3440×1440
Panel and refresh IPS, 144Hz
Brightness and contrast 400 nits typical; 1,000:1 typical
HDR HDR/DisplayHDR 400-class support
Video inputs 2× HDMI 2.0, 1× DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C video/data
USB and KVM 2× USB 3.0 downstream, USB-B upstream, built-in KVM
Stand Height, tilt and swivel; no portrait rotation

The monitor weighs 10.22kg with its stand and lists maximum power consumption of 127W. The stand supports VESA mounting, but its footprint and the panel’s width deserve a reasonably deep desk.

Image quality for work and everyday use

Why the IPS ultrawide works well

At 3440×1440, the M34WQ gives you enough horizontal space for two large application windows, a browser beside a document, or a video timeline beside an editing interface. Text is clear at the native resolution, IPS viewing angles keep the image consistent when you move, and testing by RTINGS found good reflection handling, SDR brightness and gray uniformity. It is particularly comfortable in a bright or moderately lit room.

AOC 34 Inch Curved Gaming Monitor UWQHD 200Hz VA 0.3ms HDR, CU34G4H
  • 34" ULTRAWIDE WQHD CURVED DISPLAY Immerse yourself in a 34-inch ultrawide 21:9 display with sharp 3440x1440 WQHD resolution and a 1500R curved VA panel for panoramic gaming and multitasking.
  • UP TO 200HZ GAMING PERFORMANCE Enjoy ultra-smooth gameplay with 200Hz refresh rate via DisplayPort 1.4 and 100Hz via HDMI 2.0, ideal for fast-paced PC gaming.
  • 0.3MS RESPONSE TIME React faster with 0.3ms MPRT response time, helping reduce motion blur and ghosting during competitive gaming.
  • ADAPTIVE-SYNC & HDR READY Reduce screen tearing with Adaptive-Sync and enjoy enhanced contrast with HDR Ready support.
  • ERGONOMIC STAND & CONNECTIVITY Includes height adjustment, tilt, swivel, plus 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.0, and audio out for versatile setups.

A single ultrawide does not behave exactly like two independent monitors: some workflows depend on snapping or window-management software, and you cannot physically place one full-screen application on each panel. The flat screen is a preference choice. It keeps geometry predictable for office work and is easier to share, while a curved ultrawide can feel more immersive at the edges.

Contrast and dark-room performance

The IPS trade-off is visible contrast. With no local dimming and a low native contrast ratio, blacks look gray in a dark room. RTINGS also found mediocre black uniformity, so very dark scenes can appear uneven. This is fine for daytime gaming and office work, but a VA panel generally produces deeper blacks and an OLED produces dramatically better contrast.

Color and content creation

The M34WQ is suitable for general photo, video and software work: the wide canvas, viewing angles and SDR color performance are useful. It is not a reference monitor for Adobe RGB or HDR mastering. Adobe RGB coverage is limited, there is no professional uniformity guarantee, and individual units can vary in backlight behavior and uniformity.

Gaming performance

144Hz, response and VRR

Driving 3440×1440 at 144Hz feels substantially smoother than 60Hz, provided your graphics card and connection can sustain the mode. RTINGS measured excellent response performance at maximum refresh and very low input lag, and found both FreeSync and G-SYNC compatibility in testing. These are measured results from a review published November 18, 2021 and modified September 30, 2024 on a unit manufactured in August 2021; they describe performance, not a guarantee that every later unit or setup behaves identically.

Ultrawide 3440×1440 is much more demanding than 2560×1440. A midrange GPU may not reach 144 frames per second in modern AAA games at high settings, although the display remains useful at 100Hz or more. Check your GPU output, cable, operating-system refresh setting and game resolution before assuming 144Hz is available.

PC versus console use

The M34WQ is primarily a PC gaming monitor. Games with native 21:9 support can look more immersive, while games limited to 16:9 may show side bars or a scaled image. RTINGS confirmed 1440p operation with PS5 but found that PS5 VRR was not compatible with the monitor’s supported implementation. Current console buyers who prioritize HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz or console VRR should choose a display designed around those features instead.

KVM and USB-C: the feature that can justify buying it

The integrated KVM lets one keyboard and mouse serve a desktop and a laptop. It is useful, but it is not an all-in-one docking station.

Device Video connection USB connection Role
Desktop DisplayPort or HDMI USB-B upstream to the monitor Display plus shared peripherals
Laptop USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode The same USB-C link, if it supports data Display plus shared peripherals
Keyboard and mouse None Monitor USB downstream ports Shared accessories

Setup procedure

  1. Connect the desktop by DisplayPort or HDMI and connect its USB cable to the monitor’s USB-B upstream port.
  2. Connect the laptop with a full-featured USB-C cable that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB data.
  3. Plug the keyboard and mouse into the monitor’s USB downstream ports.
  4. Open the monitor menu, enter KVM, then choose KVM Wizard.
  5. Assign the display input paired with USB-B and the input paired with USB-C.
  6. Set KVM ON/OFF to ON, then use KVM Switch or the monitor control button to change computers.

The manual says the monitor can return to the previously connected input if the selected source has no signal. Switching is not necessarily instantaneous, and sleeping or disconnected computers can produce different behavior from a dedicated hardware KVM.

  • Refresh rate: A smooth, tear-free experience with AMD FreeSync Premium (refresh rate up to 120Hz) and an ultra-low 0.03ms response time create a captivating experience for work and play.
  • Vivid colors: Enjoy vibrant, true-to-life colors with 99% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. The VA panel with 3000:1 contrast ratio and HDR readiness delivers stunning depth, detail and realism.
  • Re-engineered sound quality: Enjoy more detailed sound with spacious audio featuring greater output power, deeper frequency response and more decibel range than the previous generation.
  • Easy connectivity: Keep your desk organized and clutter-free with a single USB-C cable (up to 65W power delivery).

What USB-C does—and does not do

The manual lists USB-C profiles of 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A and 15V/1A: a maximum of 15W. That is enough for video, USB data and limited charging, but far below the 65W–100W commonly offered by newer productivity monitors. Many laptops will still require their own charger. Do not buy the M34WQ expecting one USB-C cable to replace a dock with Ethernet, high-power charging and extensive expansion.

HDR, movies and dark games

HDR compatibility is present, but the M34WQ is fundamentally an SDR-first monitor. Its lack of local dimming, limited HDR brightness and low contrast produce only a modest HDR improvement. RTINGS rates HDR performance as mediocre. HDR can accept compatible signals and display a wider color range, but the badge should not be treated as a reason to buy this model.

For dark-room films, horror games and space scenes, gray blacks and uneven dark areas are more distracting than they are in a bright office. A VA ultrawide is a better value if contrast is your priority; OLED is the premium option when budget and burn-in considerations allow.

Ergonomics, software and support

Height, tilt and swivel adjustments make the M34WQ easy to position, but the stand cannot pivot into portrait orientation. Portrait use is awkward with a 21:9 panel anyway, though buyers who rotate monitors as part of a multi-display setup should account for the omission. A monitor arm can free desk space if the stand is too large.

Gigabyte’s U.S. support page listed GIGABYTE Control Center version 26.08.03.01 dated August 3, 2026, plus OSD Sidekick version B21.1104.1 for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 64-bit. OSD Sidekick requires a USB connection between computer and monitor. Check the exact hardware revision and serial number before applying firmware; the monitor also works without the utility, and the listing does not establish identical behavior for every revision.

Common problems and fixes

KVM does not move the keyboard and mouse

  • Confirm both accessories are in the monitor’s downstream USB ports.
  • Check that the desktop has both a video cable and USB-B upstream cable.
  • Make sure the laptop cable supports video and data, not charging only.
  • Recheck KVM Wizard assignments and confirm KVM is set to ON.
  • Wake the selected computer and verify that it is outputting a signal; use KVM Reset if needed.

USB-C shows no picture

Confirm that the laptop port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt video, select Type-C manually as the input, and test a certified full-featured cable. Testing HDMI or DisplayPort separately helps isolate a laptop-port or cable problem.

144Hz is missing

Check Windows display settings, the GPU control panel, native 3440×1440 resolution, cable and output port. Color depth, HDR and adapters can change the bandwidth available; not every cable or adapter supports the maximum mode.

HDR or text looks wrong

HDR may look worse than SDR because of the panel’s contrast limitations. For blurry text, restore 3440×1440, remove incorrect scaling, select the intended refresh rate and review ClearType or equivalent operating-system text settings.

Is the M34WQ still worth buying in 2026?

Its age matters mainly because connectivity and pricing have moved on. Best Buy listed the M34WQ-SA at $449.99 on August 18, 2026, but marked it Sold Out; that is a single retailer snapshot, not proof of broad availability. At that price, compare carefully with newer monitors before buying.

The M34WQ is compelling when discounted substantially, especially if you will use its KVM and want 144Hz PC gaming. A laptop-first buyer may prefer the LG 34WQ73A-B, a 34-inch 3440×1440 IPS productivity ultrawide with KVM and 90W USB-C power delivery, accepting its curved, productivity-oriented design. A VA alternative makes more sense for contrast, an OLED for HDR and black levels, and an HDMI 2.1 display for console-focused gaming.

Who should buy it

Buy the M34WQ when

  • You want one screen for PC gaming and office work.
  • You genuinely switch a desktop and laptop and will use the KVM.
  • You prefer a flat IPS ultrawide with smooth motion and wide viewing angles.
  • Your room is bright or moderately lit.
  • The price is clearly below newer monitors with stronger USB-C and HDR.

Choose something else when

  • You need 65W, 90W or 100W laptop charging over one USB-C cable.
  • Deep blacks, convincing HDR or OLED-level response are priorities.
  • You require HDMI 2.1 or primarily play on PS5 or Xbox.
  • You need professional Adobe RGB or HDR grading capability.
  • The M34WQ costs close to a newer USB-C productivity ultrawide.

The Bottom Line

The Gigabyte M34WQ is still a strong discounted buy for hybrid PC gaming and productivity: 3440×1440, 144Hz, IPS and a genuinely useful KVM. Its 15W USB-C output, weak HDR and gray dark-room blacks make premium pricing hard to justify in 2026.
