Rock-type attacks are the clearest counter direction for Gigantamax Charizard in Pokémon GO, with Water- and Electric-type attacks as alternatives. Gigantamax does not change Charizard’s type: it remains Fire/Flying. To beat it, bring eligible Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon, coordinate with other Trainers, and use the Max Battle cues to dodge, collect energy, and support your team.
What is Gigantamax Charizard weak to in Pokémon GO?
Charizard is Fire/Flying, and Pokémon GO’s official Max Battle guide says a Pokémon does not change type when it Dynamaxes or Gigantamaxes. That makes Rock the clearest type-based counter direction. Water and Electric attacks are also plausible options against its typing. These are matchup inferences from type, not a published ranking of Charizard-specific counters.
Type effectiveness is only one part of a useful team. A candidate must also be eligible for Max Battles, able to withstand the boss’s attacks, and equipped with a trained Max Attack or support move. The official sources do not identify a best Pokémon or moveset for this encounter.
How to beat Gigantamax Charizard in a Max Battle
Gigantamax Charizard is fought in a Max Battle at a Power Spot, not in a standard raid or GO Battle League match. Only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can take part. The official Pokémon GO guide permits up to 40 Trainers in a Gigantamax battle, divided into groups of four or fewer; that is a participation cap, not a guaranteed minimum group size for winning.

- Choose eligible Pokémon. Bring Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. Favor Rock attacks when you have a suitable option, while considering whether your Pokémon can survive the boss’s attacks.
- Build the Max meter. Use Fast Attacks and Charged Attacks. Once the meter fills, your Pokémon transforms for three turns.
- Respond to targeting. When the battle indicates that your Pokémon is being targeted, swipe to dodge the boss’s attack.
- Collect energy. Swipe toward energy icons that appear during the battle to fill the Max meter faster.
- Use support moves where available. Max Guard reduces damage taken from the boss. Max Spirit heals its user and allies.
- Keep contributing after a knockout. If your party faints, cheer to help fill your teammates’ Max meters faster.
Which counter should you choose?
There is no verified Charizard-specific counter ranking or tested team in the official sources. Use type as a starting point, then choose among Pokémon that can actually enter the Max Battle and contribute through attacks, durability, or support.
- Rock: The clearest type-based direction against Fire/Flying Charizard.
- Water: A reasonable alternative based on Charizard’s Fire typing.
- Electric: Another plausible alternative based on its Flying typing.
Do not select a Pokémon solely because its attack matches one of these types: it must be a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon to participate, and survival and trained Max moves also matter. The available official guidance does not establish Charizard’s current boss moveset, so it cannot support a more specific matchup recommendation.

Is Gigantamax Charizard available now?
The official Pokémon GO editorial guide records Gigantamax Charizard’s debut during the GO Bigger kickoff event on October 26, 2024. That is a historical appearance, not confirmation of a current or upcoming return. Check the live Pokémon GO announcements for event availability before planning a battle.
The same guide describes two ways to obtain Gigantamax Pokémon: defeat one in a six-star Max Battle or complete a Special Trade. Availability and applicable event details can change, so rely on the current in-game event information for what is possible now.

Pokémon GO rules—not Sword and Shield mechanics
Advice for this encounter is specific to Pokémon GO’s Max Battles. Pokémon GO’s guide says Gigantamax does not change a Pokémon’s type, and the Charizard species page lists it as Fire/Flying. Do not apply Pokémon Sword and Shield’s G-Max Wildfire effect or its turn duration to Pokémon GO; those mechanics belong to a different game.
