“The program can’t start because glcndfilter.dll is missing from your computer.”
If Windows reports that “glcndfilter.dll was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or is “not designed to run on Windows,” do not download a replacement DLL from a random website.
The 60-second answer
glcndfilter.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the Windows Reader app and the PDF filtering and search path used mainly by Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Microsoft’s update records list it alongside Windows.data.pdf.dll for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

- Investigate PDF indexing registration only if PDF search is the specific problem.

Microsoft identifies Reader as the built-in Windows 8.1 app for opening PDF, XPS, and TIFF files. Its Windows 8.1 servicing records also list separate x86 and x64 versions of glcndfilter.dll. That makes this a Windows PDF component problem, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET problem.

Why glcndfilter.dll is missing
The most likely causes are:
- A damaged or missing Windows component
- An incomplete or failed Windows update
- Damaged Windows Reader or PDF registration on Windows 8.x
- Antivirus quarantine or security cleanup
- Malware, disk errors, or broader system corruption
- A third-party application requesting an old Windows component
- An x86/x64 mismatch or an incompatible file version
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. That is why copying another DLL into the program folder often fails.
The file is strongly associated with Windows Reader and PDF filtering on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Modern Windows releases use a newer PDF stack in some areas, so an error on Windows 10 or Windows 11 deserves an application-compatibility check rather than an automatic DLL download.
Fix 1: Complete Windows Update first
Windows servicing is the safest way to restore a genuine Windows component and its dependencies.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- On Windows 11, open Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately request it.
- Retry the program, PDF search, or Reader operation that produced the error.
If updates fail, restart once more and check again. A partially installed update can leave related PDF files at inconsistent versions.
If the problem began immediately after a known update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and review the recent entries. Do not remove an update solely because the filename appeared in an error; first complete the servicing and repair steps below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files against that repaired store.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the failing operation again.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. That is a good result. It may also report that no integrity violations were found; in that case, the error may belong to the application requesting the file rather than Windows itself.

If DISM cannot use Windows Update, Microsoft documents a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid Windows installation source matching the installed edition and build. Do not use a source from a different Windows release.
Running SFC and DISM repeatedly without noting what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Fix 3: Repair the application named in the error
If the message appears while launching a game, utility, document program, or another third-party application, that program may be the requester even though Microsoft originally supplied the Windows component.

For a Microsoft Store or packaged application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application name.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset, if available.
Reset can remove the application’s local settings and cached data.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Select the installer’s Repair option if available.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Use the application’s current installer rather than copying glcndfilter.dll into its folder. If the program is old and was designed for Windows 8.x, check whether the developer provides a Windows 10 or Windows 11-compatible release.

If the error appears only in one application, repairing that application is usually more relevant than installing a runtime package. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because the missing item ends in .dll; there is no demonstrated relationship between those runtimes and glcndfilter.dll.
Fix 4: Repair Windows Reader on Windows 8.1
Windows Reader was an inbox Windows 8.1 Store app. If the error occurs specifically when opening Reader or handling PDF files on Windows 8.1:

- Select your account or the Store menu.
- Open Downloads or Library.
- Check for updates.
- Install any available Reader update.
- Restart Windows and test a PDF.
Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 Store-app servicing guidance distinguishes between updating an already-installed inbox app and restoring an app that has been removed. An offline update package is not automatically a replacement for a removed application.
If Reader is missing, unavailable, or still fails after Windows repair, use the supported Windows recovery or installation options for that edition rather than obtaining an app package from an unofficial source.
Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. Repairing the system may restore its function, but moving to a supported Windows release is the safer long-term solution.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a system DLL. This is a possible cause, but it is not established as the common cause of this particular file.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Review detections involving
glcndfilter.dll. - Check the detection name, file path, and whether the file was quarantined.
- Do not restore it solely because an application requests it.
- Restore the file only when the path and signature identify it as a genuine Microsoft component and you understand why it was quarantined.
- Run a full scan after handling the detection.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
If another security product is installed, open its quarantine or detection history instead. If the file is in an application directory rather than a protected Windows location, treat it as an application-specific file and obtain the program again from its official developer.
Fix 6: Check the Windows architecture and file version
Microsoft’s update tables distinguish x86 and x64 builds. Do not mix them.
To check the installed architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type.
The documented Windows 8.1 examples include:
- x86 version
6.3.9600.18184 - x64 version
6.3.9600.18184
Microsoft also lists Windows Server examples from the 6.2.9200 series. These records are not a complete version history, and an older version number is not automatically the correct replacement.
Typical protected Windows locations can include:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
On 64-bit Windows, System32 commonly contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The names are confusing, so use Windows servicing to restore the correct file rather than copying between folders.

A missing glcndfilter.dll is not normally a display-driver problem. Device Manager is relevant only when the error appears alongside PDF rendering failures, graphics problems, a recently changed device, or a device warning.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and inspect the listed device.
- Right-click it and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Also inspect System devices for warning icons.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For a newly failing device, use the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official driver package rather than a generic DLL download. Does regsvr32 fix glcndfilter.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL command, and Microsoft does not provide a general consumer instruction to register glcndfilter.dll.

Registration may matter in the narrow case of a Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 PDF Search Handler problem where PDF content is not indexed. It does not normally fix an application launch error saying the file is missing.
Before using it, confirm that:
- The system is Windows 8.x or a compatible older installation.
- The actual symptom is PDF indexing or search registration.
- The DLL is a genuine Microsoft file from the matching Windows build.
- The registration tool matches the DLL architecture.
On 64-bit Windows, the usual tools are:

%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathto32-bitglcndfilter.dll"
Replace the path only with the verified location of the matching file. If registration reports that the entry point is missing, stop; that confirms registration is not applicable to that file. Do not keep trying alternate commands or download another DLL.
If DISM and SFC still fail
When Windows repair repeatedly fails:
- Confirm that the system drive has sufficient free space.
- Check Windows Update for pending restarts or failed updates.
- Review the servicing log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
- Run a full or offline malware scan.
- Check disk health using the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic tools.
- Use System Restore only if the problem began after a known change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair installation.
- If using Windows 8.1, plan a move to a supported Windows release.
FAQ
Is glcndfilter.dll safe?
The genuine Windows component is associated with Microsoft’s Windows Reader and PDF filtering path. A file with the same name in an unexpected application folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, should be investigated rather than trusted.
Should I download glcndfilter.dll separately?
No. Standalone DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, or leave the underlying servicing problem untouched. Restore the component through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or an official application installer.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. glcndfilter.dll is associated with the Windows PDF and Reader path, not those general-purpose runtimes.
Why does a Windows 11 program request an old Windows 8 component?
The program may use an old PDF, search, compatibility, or installer dependency. Repair or reinstall the requesting program and check for an updated release. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not automatically recreate every historical Windows 8 component.
What if the error names a different application?
Treat that application as the first suspect. Record its name, repair or reinstall it from its official source, check its quarantine history, and use DISM/SFC if Windows corruption is also suspected.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
No. Even two computers with the same Windows edition may have different servicing levels, architectures, or component states. Use Windows’ own repair mechanisms instead.
