Goblin Storm is a Secret Lair preconstructed Commander deck built around two overlapping engines: a wide board of Goblins and a turn in which a chain of instants and sorceries makes storm copies. Zada, Hedron Grinder spreads suitable targeted spells across your creatures, while cards such as Krenko, Mob Boss, Skirk Prospector, and the deck’s four storm spells turn that board into mana, cards, damage, or a decisive combat step.
Wizards of the Coast announced the deck as a ready-to-play product. The guide below explains the announced contents and list highlights, then gives a practical way to sequence the deck without confusing the official product with untested upgrades or current market claims.

Goblin Storm at a glance
- Format: Commander, with Zada, Hedron Grinder presented as the deck’s central commander.
- Core plan: make Goblins and other creatures, generate extra red mana, cast several spells in one turn, then finish with storm copies or a multiplied spell.
- Named storm cards: Empty the Warrens, Grapeshot, Haze of Rage, and Spreading Insurrection.
- Important secondary engine: Zada, Hedron Grinder copies a qualifying single-target spell for your other creatures, so a token-heavy battlefield increases the value of one spell.
- Product announcement: Wizards published the decklist announcement on May 6, 2026, and announced a May 18, 2026 launch at $149.99 USD. Those are launch-era details, not a current price or stock report.
What the Goblin Storm Commander deck is
Goblin Storm is an official Secret Lair Commander precon, not a tournament result or a community-created deck. Its identity is unusual for a Goblin deck because creature production is only the first half of the plan. You want enough bodies to make your tribal cards and token payoffs meaningful, but you also want to reserve a turn for a dense sequence of spells. The deck therefore rewards planning a turn ahead rather than attacking every turn simply because attacks are available.

The official explanation is: “The storm keyword (which appears on Empty the Warrens, Grapeshot, Haze of Rage, and Spreading Insurrection) lets you copy a spell for each spell that was cast before it this turn.”

That wording matters. Storm counts spells actually cast before the storm spell; it does not count lands played, abilities activated, or copies created by storm. The copies are put on the stack and resolve separately, so you should decide what each copy targets and track the stack rather than treating a storm card as one large effect.
What comes in the Goblin Storm package
The announcement describes more than the cards in the main deck. The following items are the contents Wizards identified.
| Component | Announced contents |
|---|---|
| Commander deck | One ready-to-play Secret Lair Commander deck |
| Foil borderless cards | 12 cards with new Wizard of Barge artwork |
| Basic lands | 22 foil borderless Mountains with panoramic new artwork by Wizard of Barge |
| Nonfoil reprints | 63 cards |
| Nonfoil reprints with new art | Three cards |
| Foil tokens | Four foil Goblin tokens |
| Double-sided tokens | Ten nonfoil double-sided tokens covering the types listed in the announcement |
| Tracking aid | One storm counter helper |
| Display commander | A Zada display commander marked “not legal in sanctioned play” |
| Storage | One deck box |
The display commander is a presentation item. Wizards’ wording does not make the actual commander card in the deck illegal; it distinguishes the extra display version from a card used in sanctioned play.

The official announcement publishes the complete list. The cards below are the named pieces that explain how the list is meant to function; they are examples from that list, not a replacement for the card-by-card inventory.
| Role | Named cards | How the role fits the deck |
|---|---|---|
| Command and tribal engines | Zada, Hedron Grinder; Krenko, Mob Boss; Pashalik Mons | Zada multiplies qualifying targeted spells, Krenko expands a Goblin board, and Pashalik Mons turns Goblin deaths into pressure. |
| Token production | Dragon Fodder; Krenko’s Command | Early creatures supply attackers, sacrifice material, and additional Zada targets. |
| Mana conversion | Skirk Prospector; Brightstone Ritual; Battle Hymn; Seething Song; Mana Geyser | These cards convert Goblins, creature count, or the number of opposing creatures into the red mana needed for a large spell chain. |
| Spell-chain support | Storm-Kiln Artist; Goblin Matron; Skullclamp | Storm-Kiln Artist rewards casting and copying spells, Goblin Matron finds a Goblin, and Skullclamp turns expendable creatures into cards. |
| Combat and board pressure | Goblin Warchief; Goblin Chieftain; Impact Tremors | These cards make a creature-heavy board more threatening, whether damage comes through attacks or creatures entering the battlefield. |
| Protection | Swiftfoot Boots | Protecting a key creature can preserve the engine long enough to take the payoff turn. |
| Storm payoffs | Empty the Warrens; Grapeshot; Haze of Rage; Spreading Insurrection | Each uses the spells cast earlier in the turn to create copies, giving the deck several ways to convert a high storm count into a winning position. |
The list therefore has several overlapping forms of value. A Goblin can be an attacker, a Zada target, a mana source for Skirk Prospector, a card-draw resource with Skullclamp, or fuel for a damage trigger. Choosing which role matters most on a given turn is the central skill of the deck.
How does the Goblin Storm deck work?
1. Establish a creature base
Use token makers such as Dragon Fodder and Krenko’s Command to put multiple creatures on the battlefield. Do not think of these spells only as combat cards. A wide board increases the number of creatures Zada can reference, raises the output of creature-count mana effects, and gives you material to sacrifice when a storm turn needs more red mana.
Krenko, Mob Boss is the deck’s most visible scaling engine: the longer he remains in play, the more valuable each activation becomes as your Goblin count grows. Pashalik Mons gives a different kind of insurance because Goblin deaths can still translate into damage. If a removal spell or a sacrifice outlet clears part of your board, the turn may still advance your plan instead of ending it.
2. Prepare mana before you start counting
Storm turns fail most often when the pilot reaches a high spell count but cannot pay for the final spell. Skirk Prospector lets Goblins become red mana, while Brightstone Ritual, Battle Hymn, Seething Song, and Mana Geyser can produce bursts of mana from the board or the number of creatures around the table. Storm-Kiln Artist adds another payoff for casting and copying instants and sorceries.

Plan the mana sequence before casting the first cantrip or ritual. Decide which creatures are safe to sacrifice, leave enough mana for the spell you intend to finish with, and remember that a copied spell is not a second payment from your mana pool. If your intended payoff is Grapeshot, for example, reserve the mana to cast it after the setup spells rather than spending every available red mana on the first wave of effects.
3. Build the storm count deliberately
Every spell cast before the payoff increases the number of storm copies. Low-cost token, mana, draw, and setup spells are valuable because they advance more than one resource at once. A good sequence may create a creature, turn another creature into mana, draw cards, and then add a ritual before the storm spell is placed on the stack.
Storm count resets at the end of the turn, so do not cast a payoff merely because you have one or two spells in the stack. If the table is about to remove your commander or your mana engine, a smaller storm turn can be correct, but the deck’s biggest returns come from waiting until your resources are assembled and then casting several spells in one turn.

4. Choose the payoff that matches the board
Empty the Warrens adds more Goblins, making it a bridge between a spell-heavy turn and a future combat or sacrifice turn. Grapeshot turns the count into targeted damage. Haze of Rage rewards a board that can attack, while Spreading Insurrection gives the deck another way to use a large number of copies against creatures. The correct choice depends on whether the table is vulnerable to direct damage, combat, creature removal, or a second wave of tokens.
Do not assume that the highest storm count automatically means every payoff is lethal. A storm spell can create many copies while still failing to remove a blocker, answer a protection effect, or deal enough damage to several opponents. Count the actual targets and the life totals that matter before committing your hand.
How does Zada work in Goblin Storm?
Zada, Hedron Grinder is the deck’s second copying engine. When you control a wide board, a spell that would normally affect one creature can become a spell for each creature you control, provided it qualifies for Zada’s ability. That is why token makers are important even when they do not attack: every additional creature can become another copy’s target.
Wizards’ example uses Daring Discovery. You target one Goblin you control, Zada creates a copy for each creature you control, and each Daring Discovery copy discovers 4. The example shows the intended pattern: create a broad board first, cast a suitable single-target spell, and let Zada multiply the effect.

- Put Zada and several other creatures on the battlefield.
- Confirm that the spell targets Zada or one other creature you control in the way Zada requires.
- Choose the initial target and announce that Zada’s ability triggers.
- Count the other creatures that will receive copies and choose legal targets for those copies if the spell needs them.
- Resolve the copies before moving on to the next spell, then reassess your hand and mana.
A spell that targets multiple objects, targets an opponent’s permanent, or does not meet Zada’s targeting condition will not produce the same multiplication. Read the exact card text at the table, especially when a spell has optional targets or additional costs. Zada copies a spell; she does not make the original spell free, and the copies do not themselves count as spells cast for storm.

A practical turn sequence
Early turns: develop without exposing everything
Prioritize lands, a token maker, or a low-risk support creature. Dragon Fodder and Krenko’s Command give you the bodies that later cards need. If you have Skullclamp, consider whether drawing cards now is worth reducing your board; if Skirk Prospector is available, keep enough Goblins to make the next turn’s mana and Zada plan meaningful.
Deploying every engine at once is not always correct in a multiplayer game. A single Krenko or Zada can attract removal, so protect a key creature with Swiftfoot Boots when the table’s interaction makes that line important. Goblin Warchief and Goblin Chieftain can wait until you are ready to convert a board into combat pressure unless their immediate presence changes the table’s clock.
Middle turns: assemble the conversion turn
Look for a turn in which your creature count, mana sources, and cards in hand support a sequence rather than a single spell. Goblin Matron can find an important Goblin, while Storm-Kiln Artist rewards a plan that casts several instants and sorceries. Hold a storm payoff until you can explain how the preceding spells create enough mana, cards, or bodies to make it worthwhile.

Track each spell as it is cast. If you cast a token spell, a ritual, a draw spell, and then a second ritual, the final storm spell sees four preceding spells, regardless of how many copies those spells later create. Write the number down or use the supplied storm counter helper; physical tracking prevents missed copies when the stack becomes crowded.
Late turns: commit to one clear win attempt
Once the engine is ready, choose whether the turn is primarily a storm turn, a Zada value turn, or a combat turn. Mixing all three is possible, but an unfocused sequence can spend the mana needed for the actual finisher. Resolve the highest-value draw or mana spell first, then use the new resources to choose the payoff that best fits the current board.
When opponents can respond, announce the intended sequence clearly. Keep storm copies separate from the original spell, identify targets as each copy is created, and leave priority windows for opponents to interact. If the table answers Zada before a targeted spell resolves, the original spell may still resolve, but the multiplication you planned may no longer happen.
Commander rules context for new players
Commander uses a 100-card deck made up of 99 cards plus one commander. Except for basic lands and effects that explicitly allow otherwise, the deck uses singleton construction, so you normally play only one copy of each card by name. Every card’s color identity must fit the commander’s color identity.

Those numbers explain why Goblin Storm cannot rely on a single small attack: it usually needs a large board, a storm payoff, or repeated pressure across multiple turns.

Wizards’ format overview also describes five optional Commander brackets and labels the bracket system as beta on that page. Brackets are a table-expectation tool, not a guarantee of power level. Ask the group what kinds of fast mana, tutors, combos, and mass-removal effects are acceptable before the game begins.
Multiplayer decisions that matter
- Choose the right opponent for pressure. Impact Tremors and a large token entry can affect the whole table, while combat damage may need to be divided between several opponents.
- Do not spend every resource on one player automatically. A storm turn that removes one opponent but leaves you empty-handed can give the remaining players an easy answer.
- Protect the engine, not just the commander. Krenko, Storm-Kiln Artist, Skullclamp, and Prospector can each be the card that makes the turn function.
- Use the table’s threat assessment. A visible Goblin board may look aggressive, but the more dangerous position is often the player with enough cards and mana to cast a long spell chain.
- Announce copy choices. Clear target announcements make Zada and storm turns easier for everyone to verify and reduce disputes over missed triggers.
Common mistakes and fixes
Casting the storm spell before the setup
Symptom: Empty the Warrens or Grapeshot is cast after only one or two spells and produces little value.
Fix: Sequence token, mana, draw, and support spells first. If you cannot pay for the payoff after the setup, postpone the turn instead of inflating the count with spells that do not improve your position.
Counting copies as additional storm spells
Symptom: The number of copies is increased again because a storm copy was treated as a spell cast.
Fix: Count only spells actually cast before the storm spell. Copies resolve, but they do not add to the storm count.
Trying to use Zada with the wrong target pattern
Symptom: A spell is expected to copy across the board even though it does not target a single creature you control in the required way.
Fix: Check the spell’s exact targeting text before casting it. If it does not qualify, save it for another purpose rather than assuming Zada will trigger.
Sacrificing the board without a conversion plan
Symptom: Skirk Prospector or another effect turns most Goblins into mana, but the remaining hand cannot use that mana.

Fix: Count the cards and mana you will have after the sacrifice. Keep enough creatures for a follow-up attack, Zada copies, or Pashalik Mons value unless the immediate payoff is decisive.
Forgetting that storm is turn-bound
Symptom: Spells cast on earlier turns are included in the current storm count.
Fix: Start a fresh count at the beginning of each turn and use the storm counter helper to record only spells cast during the current turn.
Should you buy Goblin Storm?
This product is a good fit if you want an official, ready-to-play Commander deck with distinctive Secret Lair presentation and a strategy that combines tribal creatures with spell sequencing. It is especially appealing if you enjoy making many small decisions about when to create tokens, when to convert them into mana, and when to hold a payoff for a larger turn.
It is a less natural fit if you want a simple attack-first Goblin deck, a list focused almost entirely on sacrifice aristocrats, or a low-complexity deck that rarely requires stack and copy tracking. Goblin Storm asks you to monitor creature count, available mana, storm count, targets, and opposing responses at the same time.
The announced price was $149.99 USD for the May 18, 2026 launch. Because that figure was an announcement price rather than a current market check, compare the actual price and availability in your region before buying. The included tokens, storm counter helper, artwork, and deck box are part of the product’s value, while the deck’s gameplay value depends on whether your group enjoys its spell-heavy Goblin plan.
Goblin Storm versus a custom Goblin deck
| Decision point | Goblin Storm precon | Custom Goblin build |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Official list with a published product identity and included accessories | You select every card and can begin from a narrower theme |
| Primary balance | Goblin and token development combined with storm and copying | You can emphasize combat, sacrifice, combo, or spells as your priority |
| Complexity | Requires tracking storm copies, Zada copies, mana, and targets | Depends on the cards and power level you choose |
| Presentation | Secret Lair foils, borderless Mountains, new art, tokens, and deck box | Presentation and accessories are up to the builder |
| Cost question | Compare the current local price with the announced launch figure | Calculate the current verified price of the cards and accessories you choose |
The precon gives you a coherent starting experience without requiring a separate deckbuilding project. A custom list gives you control over the ratio of token makers, rituals, interaction, and finishers. Neither option has an established win-rate advantage here; Wizards’ announcement provides the design and list, not independent performance testing.

Upgrading without losing the deck’s identity
If you modify the list, decide first which part of the identity you want to preserve. Keeping both a substantial Goblin population and a meaningful spell chain retains the deck’s distinctive play pattern. Replacing most of the token makers with generic fast mana may make storm turns easier but removes the creature engine that gives Zada, Krenko, Prospector, and Pashalik Mons their context. Replacing the storm package with only combat payoffs creates a different Goblin deck.
Make changes in small groups and test the social fit with your regular table. Add or remove cards according to the speed, interaction, and complexity your group expects rather than treating an unverified upgrade list as a guaranteed improvement. The published product details do not establish a ranked upgrade package, a market valuation, or a tested result for any particular change.
What the official information does and does not establish
- It establishes that Goblin Storm is an official Secret Lair Commander deck with a published named list.
- It establishes the deck’s stated strategy: build a Goblin board, cast spells to raise storm, and use storm copies and Zada’s copying ability.
- It establishes the four storm cards named in the announcement: Empty the Warrens, Grapeshot, Haze of Rage, and Spreading Insurrection.
- It establishes the announced launch date, launch price, artwork details, tokens, storm counter helper, display commander, and deck box described above.
- It does not establish a current retail price, inventory status, win rate, tournament result, or independently tested upgrade ranking.
If you want a ready-to-play deck that makes Goblin tokens and then turns a carefully sequenced spell chain into a large effect, Goblin Storm offers a clear, unusual Commander experience. Buy it for that play pattern and the announced Secret Lair presentation, not for a performance claim that has not been established.
