Which difficulty should I choose? If you’re unsure, start with Give Me a Balanced Experience: it is the middle-ground option for players who want both the story and combat. Choose Give Me a Story if you want less combat pressure, Give Me a Challenge if you already enjoy demanding action games, and Give Me God of War only if you specifically want the toughest setting and accept that it is a commitment.
What are the difficulty settings in God of War (2018)?
The 2018 game has four settings. Their names differ from those in God of War Ragnarök, so make sure you’re choosing from the 2018 game’s menu. Game Informer’s contemporary report on the studio’s announcement describes the four options and their intended audiences; it characterized Give Me God of War as the extreme mode. Which difficulty should I choose?
Choose Give Me a Story for a story-first playthrough
This setting is the natural fit if your priority is following the narrative and you’d rather combat be less demanding. The contemporary mode description says it gives players more leeway with enemies and challenges.

Choose Give Me a Balanced Experience if you’re unsure
For most first-time players without a strong preference, this is a sensible starting point. It is described as a well-rounded option, though “balanced” does not mean every fight will feel easy or perfectly matched to your personal preferences.
Is Give Me a Challenge too hard for a first playthrough?
Not necessarily. It is aimed at players who already enjoy demanding action games or have experience with God of War combat. If you like learning enemy patterns and are comfortable repeating difficult fights, it may suit you. If you are uncertain, the Balanced setting is the lower-risk place to begin.

Choose Give Me God of War only if you want the hardest mode
This setting is designed to test mastery of the game’s combat systems, not simply to add a small increase in difficulty. Santa Monica Studio senior combat tech-designer Mihir Sheth calls it “meant to test mastery of all the combat mechanics and tools available to Kratos and Atreus.” His developer explanation of the difficulty levels recommends completing the main story at least once on Balanced or Challenge before attempting it. That is advice, not a prerequisite.
What does Give Me God of War change?
Sheth’s explanation describes a more demanding combat system, not just a higher enemy-health setting. In this mode, enemies have more power and damage, greater defense against damage and stun, and more resistance to hit reactions. They can counter quickly; some can turn Elite, becoming more powerful and aggressive and gaining new attacks. Ailments inflicted on Kratos are stronger and last longer. Melee targeting assistance is reduced, while Rage and passive bonuses build more slowly.

Those changes mean fights can demand more attention to positioning, timing, and choosing the right tool. The setting is intended for players who welcome that learning curve, rather than for anyone who simply wants a harder label.
Can I change difficulty later?
Give Me God of War cannot be changed mid-game, and the game warns players about this when they select it, according to Sheth. Treat it as a lock-in rather than a setting to try casually. The cited developer guidance specifies this restriction for the hardest mode; it does not establish the same lock-in for the other three settings.

Combat tips from the developer for Give Me God of War
Sheth offers several practical suggestions for players taking on the hardest mode. These are developer guidance, not a guarantee that a tactic will work in every encounter.

- When preserving a light-attack combo, dodge sideways: rolling resets the combo.
- Use Atreus’s arrows and precise axe throws to interrupt enemies before they turn Elite.
- Use enemy afflictions to create openings.
Optional Valkyrie fights are designed as tests of combat mechanics. Senior staff combat designer Denny Yeh notes that attacks can require different responses; for one Valkyrie on Give Me God of War, arrows do not knock her down, while the slower, riskier axe throw can. That is a specific encounter example, not a rule for every enemy. Yeh’s discussion of the Valkyries explains their role as end-game combat tests.

Don’t confuse the 2018 menu with Ragnarök’s
God of War Ragnarök uses a different five-option menu: Story, Grace, Balance, No Mercy, and God of War. PlayStation says Santa Monica Studio added the fifth level to provide more flexibility.
