If God of War keeps crashing on your PC, start with the checks that Santa Monica Studio lists first: confirm your system meets the published requirements, update your graphics driver and Windows, then verify the game files. Those steps resolve many damaged-installation and compatibility problems without buying hardware. If the crash continues, use lower graphics settings as a controlled diagnostic, record exactly when it fails, collect a DXDiag report, and send that evidence through the official support route.
Identify the crash pattern before changing settings
The point at which the game fails determines which checks are most useful. Write down the timing before you start troubleshooting, because a launch crash and a crash after an hour of play can have different causes.

| When it crashes | What it suggests | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately after clicking Play | Installation files, launcher handoff, driver initialization, or a requirement shortfall | Verify files, update the graphics driver and Windows, then recheck the minimum requirements |
| During a loading screen or when entering a new area | A damaged asset, driver problem, or instability triggered by a particular rendering workload | Verify files, lower demanding graphics options, and note the exact location or loading step |
| After playing for a repeatable period | A reproducible scene, thermal or hardware instability, or a resource problem that appears under sustained load | Record the elapsed time and area, test a lower preset, and compare behavior in other games |
| At apparently random times | Several possibilities remain open, so evidence matters more than a single tweak | Complete the official update and verification steps, then document each occurrence for support |
Also copy the exact wording of any error dialog. “The game closed” is less useful to support than the complete message, including an error code or module name.
Check whether your PC meets the published requirements
Start with the Steam minimum baseline. The PC release requires 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, a graphics card in the NVIDIA GTX 960 or AMD Radeon R9 290X class, DirectX 11, and 70 GB of storage. Steam lists a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 570-class card as the recommended graphics level. These are compatibility baselines, not a promise that every combination will deliver a particular frame rate.

PlayStation’s PC requirements page also describes tiered targets from 1080p at 60 frames per second through 4K at 60 frames per second. It specifies 70 GB on a hard-disk drive at the minimum level and 70 GB on an SSD at the recommended level, with higher CPU, GPU, and RAM tiers for the higher performance targets. The published summary does not provide every processor, graphics-card, or memory value for those tiers here, so do not treat the 1080p60 or 4K60 labels as a universal guarantee for a card that merely meets the Steam minimum.
A requirement shortfall can explain a crash, but meeting the minimum does not prove that a component is healthy. A graphics card that is unstable in several games, a failing drive, or faulty system memory can cause failures even when the model number looks sufficient.
Update the graphics driver from the manufacturer
Santa Monica Studio’s first-line guidance is to update your graphics driver. For NVIDIA hardware, use the GeForce driver channel; for AMD hardware, use AMD’s support site. Both vendors provide automatic and manual update options.

- Identify whether the PC uses NVIDIA or AMD graphics in Task Manager > Performance > GPU, or by running
dxdiag. - Open the corresponding manufacturer support page and select the exact GPU model and Windows version.
- Install the current driver offered for that hardware. Follow the installer’s normal restart request before launching the game again.
- Test the same save, area, or launch sequence that previously failed. Do not change several unrelated settings at the same time; you need to know whether the driver update changed the result.
If the crash began immediately after a driver change, record that fact for support rather than assuming that repeatedly installing different versions will help. The useful evidence is the driver version, installation date, and whether other games show the same behavior.
Install pending Windows updates
The official troubleshooting article says to “Ensure Windows OS is up to date.” In Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install all available updates, and restart when prompted. Then launch God of War again before making additional changes.
Note the Windows version and build if you contact support. A crash that remains after both the operating-system update and graphics-driver update is more informative than a crash tested on an unknown software configuration.

Verify the game files in your launcher
A damaged or incomplete file can make the game fail at startup or while loading a particular asset. Santa Monica Studio specifically instructs players to “Verify the integrity of the game files.” Use the procedure for the launcher that owns your installation.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click God of War and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (shown as Local Files in some Steam layouts).
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam finish its scan and replacement downloads, then restart Steam and test the game.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and go to Library.
- Find God of War and open its three-dot or library-settings menu.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the verification and any replacement download to complete before launching the game.
Verification does not upgrade your hardware or repair a failing drive. If the launcher repeatedly redownloads the same files, note that behavior; it can point to a storage or permissions problem that needs separate investigation.
Use graphics options as a controlled diagnostic
The PC edition includes multiple graphics presets and supports DLSS and Reflex. Those options let you test whether a particular rendering workload triggers the failure, but changing them is a diagnostic procedure, not an official guarantee of a fix.

- New Multiplayer Race- Play as the blood thirsty Chaos Space Marines in multiplayer battles against Dawn of War II and Chaos Rising owners.
- New Last Stand Heroes- Face off against the relentless hordes as either the Chaos Sorcerer or the Tyranid Hive Tyrant.
- Set a lower built-in graphics preset and restart the game.
- Temporarily disable optional overlays and any frame-generation feature available in your configuration.
- If the game now reaches the same scene, re-enable one option at a time and retest. Keep a short note of the setting, result, and crash location.
- If lowering settings makes no difference, restore a sensible preset and continue with evidence collection rather than endlessly reducing image quality.
Overlays can come from the launcher, chat software, recording tools, or GPU utilities. Disable them only for the test, so you can identify whether an overlay is involved without permanently changing your normal setup. A successful low-setting run does not prove that a specific feature is defective; it shows only that the workload or software interaction deserves further testing.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Area to compare | Questions to answer | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| GPU capability and VRAM | Is the card below the GTX 960/R9 290X minimum, or does it have a history of driver resets in other games? | A requirement gap or wider instability justifies hardware diagnosis before purchase |
| System RAM | Does the machine have at least 8 GB, and do other demanding games report memory-related failures? | Below-minimum memory is a clear shortfall; otherwise collect evidence before upgrading |
| Storage | Is at least 70 GB free, and does the drive produce errors or repeated verification failures? | Insufficient or unreliable storage must be addressed, but simply moving the game is not a guaranteed fix |
| Driver status | Was the current driver installed and tested after the crash began? | A software update is a lower-cost next step than replacing hardware |
| Reproducibility | Do other games crash in the same way, or only God of War? | Several affected games point toward system-level diagnosis; one title points first toward files, settings, or game-specific support |
If the machine is below the published minimum, hardware may be necessary to meet the requirement, but choose the component based on the specific gap. If it meets the requirements and other games are stable, a purchase is especially hard to justify without stronger evidence.

Capture the information support needs
When the basic steps fail, create a compact incident record. Santa Monica Studio’s support hub provides guidance for crash messages, low-frequency crashes, and DXDiag reports.
- Exact crash message, including any code or named file
- Crash timing: launch, loading screen, a particular area, or after a repeatable number of minutes
- Launcher used: Steam or Epic Games Store
- Windows edition and build
- Graphics-card model and driver version
- CPU model, installed RAM, and free storage
- Whether file verification found and replaced anything
- Whether the same crash occurs in other games
- Any setting change that altered the result
Create a DXDiag report
- Press Win+R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. - Allow the diagnostic tool to finish checking your system.
- Select Save All Information and save the text report somewhere easy to attach.
- Open the report only to confirm that it contains your Windows, processor, memory, and display information; do not edit out the driver details.
Keep the report paired with the crash message and your timing notes. A DXDiag file without a description of the failure gives support less context than the same file tied to a repeatable scene.
Escalate through the official support route
Submit a ticket through Santa Monica Studio’s official support hub after you have completed compatibility checks, driver and Windows updates, and launcher verification. Include the crash message, DXDiag report, system specifications, launcher, timing pattern, and the exact steps already attempted. State whether lowering settings or disabling overlays changed the behavior.

If the crash is infrequent, say how often it occurs and what you were doing immediately beforehand; “once every several hours while entering a named area” is actionable evidence even when the failure cannot be reproduced on demand.
A practical order of operations
Use this sequence so that each test builds on the last one and avoids unnecessary spending:
- Record when and where the crash occurs and copy the exact message.
- Compare Windows, RAM, GPU, DirectX, and storage with the published minimums.
- Update the graphics driver from NVIDIA or AMD, as applicable.
- Install pending updates through Windows Update and restart.
- Verify the installation in Steam or Epic Games Store.
- Run a controlled lower-preset test, with optional overlays and frame-generation features disabled temporarily.
- Check whether other games show similar instability and whether the drive repeatedly fails verification.
- Generate DXDiag and submit the complete evidence through the official support hub.
This order starts with free, reversible actions, preserves useful before-and-after information, and reserves hardware decisions for cases where the specifications or broader system behavior actually support them.
