God of War Sons of Sparta is a canon 2D action platformer about Kratos and his brother Deimos during their Spartan training. Rather than the god-powered warrior seen in the mainline games, it follows a young Kratos who has not yet discovered his divine nature. Here’s what PlayStation has confirmed about the story, combat, exploration, editions, and co-op.
What is God of War Sons of Sparta?
God of War Sons of Sparta is a 2D action platformer for PS5 with a canonical story about Kratos’ youth. Developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio, it follows Kratos and Deimos during the Spartan Agoge, the demanding training period they share, and takes them beyond Sparta into the surrounding region of Laconia. PlayStation describes its central themes as duty, honor, and brotherhood.

The format is a notable departure from the over-the-shoulder perspective of the recent mainline games: this adventure presents its environments and combat in 2D pixel art. The story is canon, but official material reviewed for this explainer does not give a precise year or place the events against every other franchise event.
Who are Kratos and Deimos in this story?
Kratos is still a boy, not the god-powered warrior familiar from other entries. Game director Zack Manko told PlayStation Blog on February 16, 2026: “This is Kratos as a boy. So it’s pre-god powers. He doesn’t even know he’s a god.” Manko also describes the young Kratos as devout, with faith in the gods—a perspective that informs the game’s divine artifacts and their uses.

TC Carson voices adult Kratos as narrator, Antony Del Rio voices young Kratos, and Scott Menville voices young Deimos. The official overview frames the brothers’ journey as a test of their training and of what duty, honor, and brotherhood mean to them. It establishes the premise and themes, not a full plot synopsis, so this is best approached as a spoiler-light introduction rather than an account of specific story turns.
How does combat work?
Combat is built around a spear and shield, with several systems that let players shape how they fight. PlayStation’s descriptions and combat tips point to three main layers:

- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
- Spear and shield: The weapon has upgradeable attachments and separate upgrade paths. PlayStation’s combat tips call attention to the spear’s tip, grip, and tail, suggesting that its different parts matter in a fight.
- Skill trees: Three trees develop offensive, defensive, and movement abilities. They offer different kinds of progression rather than a single stated best route.
- Gifts of Olympus: These divine artifacts provide special and super attacks. PlayStation cites ranged attacks, exploding projectiles, and melee combos as examples, and describes the Gifts as useful in both combat and exploration.
Brutal finishers can end fights. The official descriptions establish the combat systems and broad attack types, but do not identify an optimal build or rank particular attachments and artifacts. Choices are therefore better understood as tools to match a preferred approach than as a solved setup.

The journey moves through Laconia, rendered as high-definition pixel-art environments. PlayStation says optional quests, hidden encounters, and loot reward exploration; puzzles also make use of the Gifts of Olympus. That combination means the artifacts are not only combat abilities, but part of how players interact with the world.

The enemy roster includes returning Greek-saga creatures such as minotaurs, satyrs, and undead legionnaires, alongside new creatures drawn from Greek mythology. PlayStation says the returning enemies’ original animations were translated into 2D representations. Bear McCreary composed the soundtrack, which PlayStation characterizes as a blend of retro aesthetics, orchestral music, and choral elements.
What is The Pit, and can you play co-op?
The Pit is a separate roguelike challenge mode intended as endgame content. Its enemy lineups and reward pools differ from run to run. PlayStation says it normally becomes available after the main story, while also publishing a menu sequence for accessing it earlier.

The mode supports solo play or two-player local co-op. PlayStation’s FAQ specifies that co-op is local and offline-only; the available official information does not describe online multiplayer.

PlayStation lists two digital editions for PS5. The Standard Edition contains the game; the Digital Deluxe Edition adds digital extras. Prices and discounts vary by region and can change, so consult the live PlayStation Store listing for the price shown in your country.

This is a time-limited US storefront price, not a permanent or global price. The listed artbook and soundtrack are digital Deluxe Edition contents.
When did God of War Sons of Sparta release?
PlayStation’s official pages give dates that differ by one day: the announcement post dated February 12, 2026 says the game was out that day, while PlayStation’s FAQ gives February 13, 2026 as the release date. The pages do not explain the discrepancy, so neither date should be treated as a correction of the other.
