Its young Kratos-and-Deimos story gives the spin-off a clear reason to exist, but the critical response suggests its character and exploration strengths do not always translate into consistently compelling play. It is a worthwhile change of scale for players curious about the brothers’ past, though the format and presentation may not deliver the godlike impact some expect from the series.
What is God of War: Sons of Sparta?
Sons of Sparta is a single-player God of War prequel for PlayStation 5, released February 12, 2026, according to PlayStation’s product page and its official support page. It was developed with Mega Cat Studios as a retro-inspired 2D action-platformer, a substantial shift from the series’ more familiar cinematic, large-scale presentation.

The premise follows young Kratos and Deimos as they search for a missing fellow cadet, testing the brothers’ Spartan training and values. That focus makes the game’s central appeal less about another chapter in older Kratos’ saga and more about seeing how the brothers’ early lives shape them.
Does the 2D format still feel like God of War?
The format is the defining gamble. PlayStation describes the project as translating God of War staples into a retro-inspired platformer. The result is not simply a smaller version of the mainline games: a 2D action-platformer asks for different rhythms of movement, combat, exploration and visual storytelling. Whether that feels like a refreshing reinterpretation or a departure from the spectacle is likely to depend on what a player wants from the name.

- Feel your journey through the Norse realms, made possible by immersive haptic feedback and adaptive trigger functionality.
- Take advantage of multidirectional 3D Audio; hear enemies approaching from any direction. (3D audio with stereo headphones (analog or USB))
- Bask in the beautiful worlds you travel through, brought to life by precise art direction and arresting attention to detail.
- Switch between full 4K resolution at a targeted 30 frames per second, or dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps. (4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display)
The change also offers a practical way to tell a more intimate story about Kratos and Deimos. A missing-cadet search gives the brothers a shared goal and puts their conduct under pressure, rather than relying only on the scale of a world-ending threat. That premise is a strong fit for a prequel, though story interest alone cannot make every stretch of moment-to-moment play land.
What do critics say about the story, play and presentation?
The available review excerpts describe a mixed picture rather than a settled consensus. TechRadar’s review praises the prequel story and characters while noting ups and downs in gameplay. Other critic excerpts highlight puzzles, environments and the amount of content, while some call the art direction uninspired or say the game takes time to become compelling. These are individual critical reactions, not a guarantee of how every player will respond.

- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
Taken together, the criticism points to three useful questions for prospective players: whether the 2D interpretation retains enough of God of War’s recognizable tone, whether the brothers’ story compensates for uneven stretches of play, and whether exploration and environmental variety keep the pace engaging. The premise and character angle appear to be the clearest strengths; the unevenness in gameplay and presentation is the main reason the game may stop short of feeling essential.
Soundtrack, editions and accessibility
Bear McCreary returns as composer. In its official PlayStation Blog announcement, PlayStation says the score combines retro aesthetics with the series’ orchestral and choral style. That approach reflects the same balancing act as the game itself: honoring a recognizable God of War identity while working within a different format.

- Consider it if you want more context for Kratos and Deimos, enjoy 2D action-platformers, or are interested in seeing God of War interpreted at a more personal scale.
- Temper expectations if you are mainly looking for the mainline series’ familiar large-scale presentation or want consistently compelling pacing and art direction.
- Check before buying if regional language support or a particular accessibility option is important to you; consult the local PlayStation listing rather than assuming every region shows the same details.
The game is designed for PS5, and the DualSense is an optional controller choice for that platform. Nothing in the available materials indicates that a new controller is necessary to play.
