God of War: Sons of Sparta is a polished, canon prequel that trades the series’ familiar 3D spectacle for 2D action-platforming and Metroidvania exploration. Its combat, platforming, and focus on young Kratos and Deimos can be rewarding, but the game’s familiar genre conventions and uneven pacing keep it from feeling essential. It is best approached as a smaller-scale God of War story, not a 2D version of the franchise’s blockbuster adventures.
What kind of God of War game is Sons of Sparta?
Sons of Sparta is a canon story set during Kratos’ youth, when he and his brother Deimos are undergoing the harsh Agoge training. The pair set out to find a missing cadet. PlayStation describes it as a 2D action-platformer developed with Mega Cat Studios, featuring hand-drawn pixel animation, spear-and-shield combat, and divine artifacts called Gifts of Olympus. PlayStation’s announcement quotes Santa Monica Studio Communications Director Grace Orlady describing it as “a 2D action platformer with a canon story set in Kratos’ youth during his harsh training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos.”
That combination makes the game an unusual series entry: it adds to the Greek-era story while changing the format and scale. If what you want is the familiar third-person action built around huge set pieces and god-slaying spectacle, this is not that experience. If you are open to a side-scrolling adventure centered on the brothers and their early lives, its smaller scope is part of the appeal.
How good are the combat and exploration?
Critic reviews point to a game with satisfying fundamentals rather than a major reinvention of the genre. Metacritic’s review excerpts praise combat, tightly designed platforming and puzzles, and enemy encounters that become more satisfying as Kratos gains abilities. They also note that enemy designs repeat, the skill tree feels conservative, and the game relies on familiar Metroidvania conventions. The result can be enjoyable moment to moment without making its systems feel especially distinctive.

Combat and progression
The spear-and-shield combat gives the action a different texture from the series’ better-known 3D entries. Reviewers highlight the strength of the fighting and the way additional abilities improve encounters, while also flagging repetition in the enemies and a restrained approach to skill progression. Players looking for a steady stream of new combat ideas may find the systems less compelling than the moment-to-moment impact of individual fights.
Platforming, puzzles, and pace
Platforming and puzzles are among the game’s more consistently praised elements, with reviewers describing their design as tight and thoughtful. Pacing is less reliable: selected critic reviews say the early progress can be slow, so the adventure may take time to find its rhythm. That uneven start matters if you expect the immediate escalation typical of the mainline games.
Does the story make this a worthwhile return to Greece?
The story’s clearest draw is its focus on Kratos and Deimos as young brothers, rather than another large-scale chapter about the adult Kratos. TechRadar’s review calls the story and characters consistently good, and Metacritic’s selected review excerpts likewise praise the character focus and the value of a new story chapter. This makes Sons of Sparta a potentially appealing addition for players who want more of the series’ Greek-era history.
That does not mean the chapter is essential to understanding the broader saga. The available critic assessments support a story that is worthwhile on its own terms, not a claim that it changes the meaning of the entire franchise. Its value depends largely on how much you want a character-focused prequel and how comfortable you are with a smaller, side-scrolling adventure.
What do the reviews add up to?
The critical picture is mixed but coherent: Sons of Sparta is polished and often satisfying, yet seldom stands out among Metroidvania-style games. Its strengths are combat, platforming, puzzles, and the relationship at the center of its story. Its weaker points are repetition, a slow start, and systems that can feel conservative or familiar. These are themes in selected critic reviews, not a claim of unanimous agreement.
TechRadar recommends it to players seeking a new canon story and cautions those expecting a 2D recreation of God of War’s established spectacle. The same review praises its fit for PlayStation Portal based on that reviewer’s experience; that is a reviewer’s judgment, not a guarantee of a particular experience for every player.

Is Sons of Sparta single-player or co-op?
The main story is single-player. The PlayStation FAQ says two-player local, offline couch co-op is available in The Pit, an endgame roguelite challenge mode unlocked after completing the campaign. The FAQ also gives a cheat-code method to unlock The Pit early. So the Store’s mention of “Single Player or 2 Player Couch Co-Op” should not be read as campaign co-op. PlayStation’s product and FAQ page provides the mode details.

The release date varies across PlayStation’s own materials. The US PlayStation Store listing and the February 12, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement give February 12, 2026, while PlayStation’s FAQ gives February 13, 2026. The pages do not explain the one-day difference, so neither date should be treated as a globally uniform release date.

Who should play it?
- Consider it if you want a canon story about young Kratos and Deimos, enjoy 2D action-platformers, or value carefully designed platforming and puzzles alongside combat.
- Temper expectations if you mainly want the scale and presentation of the series’ familiar 3D adventures, or if repetitive enemies and slow early pacing tend to frustrate you.
- Do not buy it for campaign co-op: the story is single-player; local two-player co-op is limited to the separate The Pit challenge mode.
Accessibility and controls
PlayStation lists aim assist; audio cues and panning; caption and subtitle customization; color filters; high-contrast display and HUD options; input remapping; puzzle timing controls; and text-size controls, among other options. The US Store listing also identifies adjustable difficulty and manual saving. Players who need specific accessibility features should check the current PlayStation product page for the full list.
The game supports responsive haptic feedback through the DualSense wireless controller, according to PlayStation. That is a feature of the controller experience, not a reason an existing PS5 owner needs to buy another controller.
