You do not need GOG Galaxy to play a GOG game. Galaxy is an optional client for convenience features such as automatic updates, cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer invitations and a unified library. The standalone offline installer is the better fit for DRM-free ownership, offline play, archival backups and computers where you do not want another launcher. For many players, the strongest approach is hybrid: save the offline installer, then use Galaxy when synchronization or social features are useful.
Do you need GOG Galaxy to play GOG games?
No. GOG Support describes Galaxy as “your optional application for GOG games.” GOG’s developer documentation describes its DRM-free model as meaning that games released on the store should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether the Galaxy client is installed, or whether the computer is connected to the internet.

That promise applies to the game itself, not automatically to every connected feature. Multiplayer, friends lists, leaderboards, cross-play services, cloud saves and achievements can depend on the game, Galaxy components or an internet connection. A title may launch and remain playable offline while its online systems are unavailable.

What Galaxy adds
Managed installation and updates
Galaxy handles downloading and installing a game from your library, then presents updates through the client. This is convenient when you want the latest supported build without finding and downloading each installer component yourself. GOG Support and the developer documentation identify installation and updates as core Galaxy functions.
Automatic patching is useful for games that receive frequent fixes or for households where several people use the same computer. It also reduces the chance of missing a required installer part. The trade-off is that the client decides when and how updates are offered, so an update can change a working setup before you have archived the previous files.
Cloud saves
Galaxy can synchronize saves for games that implement cloud-save support. This is valuable if you move between computers or reinstall Windows. It is not a guarantee for every game: support is title-specific, and a game can have cloud saves disabled, incomplete or unavailable for a particular version.
For important campaigns, treat cloud saves as synchronization rather than your only backup. Keep a local copy of save folders when the game’s documentation identifies their location, especially before changing versions or using mods.
Achievements, friends and multiplayer invitations
The client can expose achievements, friends, social activity and multiplayer invitations when a title supports those systems. GOG’s product description also positions Galaxy as a way to view cross-platform friends’ achievements and play activity. These features are services layered on top of the game; they are not required for a DRM-free single-player executable to start.
Rollbacks and version management
GOG Support lists rollbacks among Galaxy’s continuing features. A rollback can help when a new patch breaks a mod, introduces a bug or changes compatibility. Availability and the number of selectable versions depend on the title and the files GOG keeps for it, so do not assume that every historical build is available.

One library
Galaxy is attractive if you want one interface for your owned PC games and related activity. That convenience matters more as your library grows. It also means your normal launch path is tied to a client whose operating-system support and feature set can change; verify current compatibility before relying on Galaxy on an older operating system.

A launcher-independent copy
From your GOG account, the game page provides the option labeled “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS”. Selecting it gives you the standalone setup files instead of routing the installation through Galaxy. GOG also hosts bonus content and, where applicable, additional game files.
Once the installer files are stored locally, you can install the game without opening Galaxy. The DRM-free design means the core game should not depend on Galaxy authentication or a live internet connection. Online-only functions remain a separate matter.
Archival control
An offline installer can be copied to a second drive, a network storage device or recordable optical media. You choose when to update, which installer version to retain and when to reinstall. That control is useful for a machine that must remain stable, a modded game that should not be patched automatically, or a preservation collection.
Keep the complete set of files. Large releases commonly use more than one installer part, and a game may have separate files for language packs, patches, downloadable content or bonus material. An incomplete set can leave you unable to perform a clean reinstall later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFewer connected features
The direct route does not provide Galaxy’s client-managed cloud saves, social layer or automatic update workflow. You may need to download a newer offline installer or patch manually. Multiplayer and other online systems can still require the game’s own service, an internet connection or a compatible network configuration.

How to install through Galaxy
- Install the current Galaxy client from GOG and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open your library and select the game you want to install.
- Choose the install command, select the destination drive and review any available language or component choices.
- Allow Galaxy to download and configure the game. Leave the client open if the installation requires it to finish authentication or service setup.
- Before making major changes, confirm whether cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer invitations or rollback options are available for that specific title.
- If you want a permanent recovery copy, download the game’s offline installer separately; a Galaxy installation alone is not an archival backup.
The exact labels and available options can change as Galaxy evolves. The important distinction is that Galaxy is managing the files and updates for you, while the offline-download page gives you files that you can preserve yourself.
How to install from an offline backup
- Sign in to your GOG account in a web browser and open the game’s page.
- Select “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS”.
- Download every required setup file. If the download list includes separate parts, patches, language files or owned DLC, save the files together.
- Download any included bonus content you want to preserve.
- Move the files to durable storage before deleting the browser downloads. Keep the original filenames so the installer can find multi-part data.
- Run the setup executable from the stored files and choose the destination folder. Install any redistributables or other prerequisites supplied with the game.
- Launch the game directly from its installed executable or shortcut. Do not start Galaxy unless you specifically want a Galaxy feature.
Installer behavior differs between games. Some packages contain one setup executable; others use several numbered files. If a setup program reports that data is missing, place all parts in the same folder and check that every download completed before trying again.
A practical hybrid workflow
You do not have to choose one method permanently. A hybrid setup separates convenience from preservation:
Recommended Free Tools
- Download and archive the complete offline installer set, patches, DLC and bonus files for every game you care about.
- Record the installer version, language, owned DLC and any redistributables or special prerequisites.
- Install through Galaxy on your everyday computer when automatic updates, cloud saves or social features are useful.
- Keep a direct-install copy available for travel, an offline computer, troubleshooting or a future reinstall.
- Before accepting a major Galaxy update, copy important saves and note the current game version if you use mods.
This approach avoids treating a client as the only path to a game while still giving you the convenience of managed updates and synchronization. It also lets you install the archived version directly when a new patch is incompatible with your setup.
Preserving a GOG game for the long term
What to save
- Every offline installer part for the base game.
- Offline patches or older versions you may need for compatibility.
- Installers for owned DLC and language packs.
- Bonus content that would be difficult to locate again.
- A note identifying the game version, language and the date you downloaded it.
- Information about required redistributables, drivers or other prerequisites.
- A local backup of valuable save files.
Where to store it
Use at least two storage locations when the game matters to you. A second internal or external drive protects against a single-device failure; recordable optical media can provide another offline copy. Check that the files remain readable when you migrate to new storage.
GOG’s public statement, reported by GamesRadar on July 14, 2026, said: “Download the offline installer of any of your games on GOG, save it to a disc, and it’s yours forever.” The practical meaning is that a locally retained installer can be reused without depending on the Galaxy client. You should still preserve your account and license records, because those establish what you own and help you recover files you did not archive.

What an archive cannot guarantee
An installer preserves the files available at the time you downloaded them. It cannot guarantee that a game’s servers will remain online, that multiplayer matchmaking will continue, or that future operating systems will support every old dependency. For games with online-only components, the single-player portion may remain usable while network features stop working.

Feature-by-feature comparison
| Feature | Galaxy installation | Direct offline installation |
|---|---|---|
| Core DRM-free launch | Supported; Galaxy is optional for the core game. | Supported in the DRM-free model without Galaxy authentication. |
| Internet needed for ordinary offline play | Not normally for the DRM-free game after installation, but client services may be unavailable. | No internet is needed after all required files are present, subject to game-specific exceptions. |
| Automatic updates | Yes, through the client when offered for the title. | No; download and apply updates manually. |
| Cloud saves | Available where the game supports Galaxy cloud saves. | Not provided by the installer; copy local saves yourself. |
| Achievements and social activity | Available where supported by the title and services. | Not supplied by the standalone files unless the game implements an independent system. |
| Multiplayer invitations and friends | Galaxy can provide these features for supported games. | Requires the game’s own networking path; Galaxy invitations are not available. |
| Version control | Galaxy may offer rollback options, depending on the game. | You control the archived installer and choose when to replace it. |
| Archival independence | Low if you retain only the client-managed installation. | High when the complete installer set is stored on durable media. |
Which option fits common situations?
You mainly play single-player games offline
Choose the direct installer. It minimizes launcher dependence and gives you a copy that can be installed on an offline machine. Keep Galaxy available only if a particular title’s cloud saves or achievements matter to you.
You switch between two or more computers
Start with Galaxy when the game supports cloud saves, because synchronization reduces manual copying. Still archive the offline installer and keep local save backups; cloud synchronization is not a substitute for an independent recovery copy.
You use mods or need a fixed version
Archive the installer version that works with your mod set. Galaxy’s updates and rollback tools can help, but their availability varies by title. A direct installation gives you the clearest control over when files change.
You care about achievements, friends or invitations
Use Galaxy for titles that support those systems. The offline installer can launch the game, but it does not recreate Galaxy’s social layer.
You are setting up an older or isolated computer
Prefer the offline installer, after checking the game’s prerequisites and the computer’s operating-system compatibility. Galaxy’s supported operating systems and features can change, while a stored installer remains available for reuse.

You are worried that Galaxy could disappear
Do not rely on a client-only installation. Download and store the complete offline backup now, along with your ownership records and prerequisites. GOG’s stated DRM-free approach is specifically intended to avoid requiring a storefront’s permission to play what you bought.
Troubleshooting: choose the right recovery path
The game launches, but cloud saves are missing
Check whether that title supports Galaxy cloud saves and whether you are signed into the owning account. If support is absent or synchronization failed, locate the local save folder and restore a backup manually. Do not overwrite a newer local save until you have copied it elsewhere.
A Galaxy update broke a mod or configuration
Stop automatic updates if the client offers that control, preserve the current save and mod files, and check whether a rollback is available for the game. If the required build is not offered, install the archived offline version into a separate folder and restore the compatible mod set.
The offline installer says a file is missing
Confirm that every required setup part finished downloading and that all parts are in one folder with their original names. Re-download only the incomplete part if possible. Include owned DLC and language files when the installer expects them.
The game plays offline but multiplayer does not work
This is expected for features that depend on online services. DRM-free status covers copy protection for the game, not the continued operation of matchmaking, friends, leaderboards or other network systems. Reconnect to the internet and use the supported client or game service when that feature is required.
The installer works, but the game will not start on a new computer
Review the prerequisites saved with the archive, install the required redistributables, and verify that the operating system and hardware meet the game’s requirements. An archived game can remain intact while an old dependency becomes unavailable or incompatible with a newer system.
Are there performance or cost differences?
There is no published general benchmark in the available documentation showing that Galaxy games run faster or slower than the same games installed directly. Installation method primarily changes convenience, update control and connected features; it is not evidence of a frame-rate advantage.
Neither method requires a separate purchase beyond owning the game. Galaxy consumes disk space for the client and its managed files, while offline installation requires storage for the installer archive in addition to the installed game. The amount varies by title, and no general installer-size statistic is established.
Bottom line: use both deliberately
Use Galaxy when automatic updates, cloud saves, achievements, friends, cross-play or a unified library solve a real problem for you. Install directly when offline access, archival control, mod stability or freedom from a launcher matters more. The safest long-term practice is to archive the complete offline installer and then use Galaxy selectively, rather than treating either path as the only way to keep playing a game you bought.
