GOG vs Steam: What Are the Differences?

GOG prioritizes DRM-free independence and offline installers, while Steam offers the broader ecosystem. Here is how the two stores compare for offline play, multiplayer, mods, cloud saves, families, refunds, and Steam Deck.

Choose GOG when DRM-free ownership, offline installers, classic-game compatibility, and independence from a launcher matter most. Choose Steam when you want the broadest PC catalog, multiplayer ecosystem, Workshop mods, Steam Families, controller features, or Steam Deck support.

Neither store is universally better. The right choice can change from one game to the next, so check the individual listing for DRM, multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, DLC, mod support, controller compatibility, and third-party launchers before buying.

The fundamental difference: independence versus integration

GOG and Steam are both PC game stores and launchers, but they are built around different priorities.

GOG requires its store releases to be DRM-free. For supported purchases, you can download offline installers from the GOG website, store them on another drive, and install the game without GOG GALAXY. GALAXY remains useful for automatic updates, cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer, crossplay, and library management, but it is optional for the basic offline installation and play of an offline-capable game. See GOG’s documentation on offline installers and its DRM-free requirements.

Steam is a client-centered platform. The Steam client handles purchasing, downloading, updating, library management, social features, cloud synchronization, controller configuration, and device integration. That creates a much larger ecosystem, but a Steam purchase is generally more dependent on the Steam account and client environment.

The practical trade-off is not simply “DRM versus no DRM.” It is independence versus integration.

GOG vs Steam at a glance

Category GOG Steam
DRM Store releases are required to be DRM-free. Games may use Steam authentication, optional Steamworks features, or additional third-party DRM.
Offline installers Downloadable installers are available for supported purchases. No universal equivalent; Offline Mode is client- and game-dependent.
Catalog Smaller, selective catalog with a strong classic-game focus. Generally broader selection, especially for new releases, multiplayer, early access, and Steamworks-enabled games.
Multiplayer Available where the developer implements it, sometimes through GALAXY or separate services. Usually the safer default because of broader adoption, player populations, and Steamworks integration.
Mods Manual and third-party modding is often possible, depending on the game. Steam Workshop offers integrated discovery, installation, and updating for supported games.
Cloud saves Available for participating games and subject to implementation and storage limits. Steam Cloud is available for configured games, with client synchronization and conflict handling.
Family sharing No directly comparable first-party feature identified here. Steam Families supports sharing eligible games with up to five invited family members, subject to restrictions.
Steam Deck/Linux Individual games may work through Wine or Proton, but support is not uniform. Steam Deck and Proton are integrated into the Steam ecosystem.
Refund standard GOG has publicly described a 30-day policy, subject to its current agreement and exceptions. Generally within 14 days and under two hours of playtime.

DRM and offline play

What DRM-free means on GOG

DRM, or digital rights management, uses technical restrictions to control access to software. In GOG’s context, DRM-free means the game is distributed without technical restrictions requiring GOG authentication, GALAXY, or another store client to install and launch its offline-capable portions.

That does not mean every feature works without the internet. Multiplayer servers, matchmaking, leaderboards, friends lists, cloud saves, online statistics, and some account-based achievements still need their required online services. A game can be DRM-free while remaining dependent on a server for multiplayer.

GOG’s developer documentation says a failed GALAXY initialization should not prevent an eligible game from loading; GALAXY-dependent features may simply be unavailable. The exact behavior remains title-specific. See GOG’s GOG-and-Steam documentation and its SDK guidance.

Does Steam use DRM?

“Steam is DRM” is too broad to describe every game accurately. Steam may provide account authentication, while a particular game may also use Steamworks features, publisher-specific activation, or third-party DRM. Some games sold through Steam may have little or no meaningful DRM beyond the platform relationship.

The useful distinction is this: Steam is a client-based distribution platform where a game may depend on Steam authentication or other DRM, while GOG requires its store releases to be DRM-free. Inspect the individual game’s store page and publisher requirements rather than assuming every Steam title has identical protection.

Are GOG games always playable offline?

No. GOG requires the offline-capable portions of its releases to work without GALAXY and without an internet connection. Online-only functions cannot work offline. A multiplayer game may launch perfectly without a connection while its matchmaking and servers remain unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Steam games always playable offline?

No. Steam has an Offline Mode, but eligible games generally need to be prepared in advance, and the result depends on the game’s own requirements. Third-party DRM, online-only games, publisher launchers, anti-cheat systems, and online authentication can still block offline play. Cloud synchronization and achievements may wait until the client reconnects.

Steam Offline Mode is therefore useful, but it is not the same as owning a client-independent installer.

Offline installers and preservation

GOG’s offline installers are the clearest practical advantage for preservation-minded players. You can download them through the website, retain them on local storage, and reinstall the game without interacting with GALAXY. Bonus content such as manuals and soundtracks may also be available when supplied by the publisher.

For a serious backup, retain more than one installer. Record the game version, keep important patches and DLC where available, back up save files, and preserve manuals or configuration notes. One installer may not contain every later patch, dependency, or multiplayer-compatible build. It also cannot preserve a shut-down server or guarantee that future operating systems will run the game.

Steam’s client-based downloading and Offline Mode can be convenient, but Steam does not offer a universal equivalent to GOG’s downloadable offline-installer model. A Steam library remains tied more closely to the account, client state, and any additional protection used by the game.

Which store has more games?

Steam generally has the broader PC catalog, particularly for new releases, early-access games, multiplayer titles, and games built around Steamworks, Workshop, or Steam Deck integration. It is also usually the safer choice when you want the most predictable access to a current release.

GOG has a smaller and more selective catalog. Its identity is especially strong around classic DOS and Windows games, DRM-free releases, compatibility fixes, manuals, soundtracks, and other extras where publishers provide them.

Exact catalog counts are poor long-term comparisons because both stores change constantly and may count DLC, bundles, demos, soundtracks, and free products differently. Treat the game’s availability, edition, and included content as more important than a headline number.

Multiplayer and social features

Steam is usually the safer default for multiplayer. More games launch there, more players and friends are likely to use it, and Steamworks supports familiar friend, invite, networking, overlay, and community integrations.

That is not the same as saying GOG has no multiplayer. GOG releases can support multiplayer through GALAXY, independent servers, or other services. GOG also documents crossplay between Steam and GALAXY users when a developer implements it. However, a GOG edition may have different matchmaking, a smaller player population, no crossplay, a separate backend, or no multiplayer at all.

Before buying a multiplayer game, check:

  • Whether multiplayer is included in the exact store edition.
  • Whether GALAXY, Steam, a publisher account, or another launcher is required.
  • Whether Steam-GOG crossplay is supported.
  • Which servers and matchmaking systems the version uses.
  • Whether players need matching DLC or editions.
  • Whether anti-cheat works on your operating system or device.

Mods and community content

Steam is generally better for mod convenience because Steam Workshop can combine discovery, subscription, downloading, and updates inside the client. That can be a decisive advantage for games with an active Workshop community.

Workshop support is not universal, however. Many games use Nexus Mods, ModDB, GitHub, an in-game browser, or manual file installation. GOG versions can often use the same community mods, but executable versions, file paths, patches, DLC, and launcher assumptions may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DRM-free files can sometimes make manual modding and long-term experimentation easier, but that is a game-specific benefit—not a guarantee that every GOG version is more moddable.

Cloud saves and achievements

Neither platform provides cloud saves automatically for every game. The publisher must configure the title correctly, and different store versions may use different save locations or formats.

GOG supports cloud saves for participating titles. Its documentation describes implementation requirements and lists a 200 MB total save-file quota for qualifying cloud-save implementations. Steam Cloud also depends on a game’s configuration and provides client handling for synchronization, conflicts, retries, and offline changes. See GOG’s quality-assurance documentation and Steam’s Steam Cloud notes.

Cloud saves are synchronization, not a complete backup. Mods, different builds, multiple computers, and interrupted uploads can create conflicts. Export important save folders manually, especially before changing versions or removing mods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam achievements are deeply integrated with Steam profiles, activity, game pages, and the wider community. GOG achievements are implemented through GALAXY where supported. A GOG game can continue running offline if GALAXY services fail, but GALAXY-dependent achievements and other modules may be unavailable until the client reconnects.

Steam Families versus GOG

Steam Families is a major Steam advantage for households. Valve says a family can invite up to five members, and members can play eligible shared games with their own saves and achievements. Workshop files are available when playing a shared title.

Sharing is not universal. Developers can opt games out, and simultaneous use of the same title may require multiple copies. Valve also notes that a cheating ban incurred while using another person’s copy can affect the owner for that game. Read the current Steam Families announcement and developer documentation for the restrictions.

The reviewed GOG sources do not identify a directly comparable first-party family-library feature. Do not treat sharing GOG account credentials as an equivalent or safe substitute.

Steam Deck and Linux

Steam is the clear ecosystem choice for Steam Deck. Valve integrates the Steam storefront, SteamOS interface, Proton compatibility, Steam Input, Remote Play, and device-specific library features. Non-Steam games can also be added to the Deck interface, but that does not make them first-party Steam releases.

GOG games may run on Linux or Steam Deck through Wine, Proton, or other compatibility tools, but support is not uniform. Check each game for:

  • Proton or Wine compatibility.
  • Launcher and DRM behavior.
  • Anti-cheat compatibility.
  • Controller support.
  • Video and codec issues.
  • Whether GALAXY-dependent services are unavailable.
  • Whether cloud saves and multiplayer work as expected.

Steam Deck users should generally buy the Steam version unless the GOG edition offers a specific DRM-free or preservation benefit worth the extra compatibility work. Valve’s Steam Deck developer FAQ covers Proton, Remote Play, Steam Input, and non-Steam applications.

Refunds and prices

Steam’s standard refund rule is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Valve says the two-hour calculation includes online, offline, and shared-library playtime. Start with the current Steam refund policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GOG has publicly described a 30-day refund policy, including circumstances in which a game has been downloaded, launched, or played. The current GOG User Agreement, regional law, product type, preorder status, payment method, and applicable exceptions control the transaction. Do not treat “30 days” as an unconditional guarantee without checking the live terms.

Neither store is permanently cheaper. Compare the same edition, DLC bundle, currency, tax, and sale timing. A slightly lower Steam price may be worth accepting if you need Workshop, Deck support, or Steam Families. A similarly priced GOG copy may be better value if you want DRM-free files and offline installers.

Which should you choose?

Choose GOG when:

  • You want DRM-free distribution and a launcher-independent installation.
  • You primarily play single-player games offline.
  • You are building a preservation-friendly library with local backups.
  • You are buying a classic PC game.
  • You want downloadable installers and publisher-supplied bonus content.
  • The GOG listing includes the multiplayer, DLC, patches, and mod compatibility you need.

Choose Steam when:

  • You want the broadest practical PC ecosystem and new-release coverage.
  • Your friends already play on Steam.
  • You need Steam Workshop or a large mod community.
  • You use Steam Deck or Linux through Proton.
  • You want Steam Families, Steam Input, Remote Play, or integrated community tools.
  • The Steam edition has better multiplayer, servers, crossplay, or DLC support.

Buy whichever version is best when:

  • The game is effectively DRM-free on both stores.
  • One store has a substantially better price or edition.
  • The game uses a separate launcher regardless of storefront.
  • Multiplayer servers are cross-platform and feature-complete on both versions.
  • You already own one copy and do not need the other platform’s features.
  • The game’s patches, DLC, or mod ecosystem differ between editions.

Checklist before buying a specific game

  1. Check DRM and launchers: Look for Steam authentication, GALAXY requirements, publisher accounts, third-party DRM, and anti-cheat.
  2. Check offline play: Confirm which parts work without an internet connection and whether Offline Mode must be prepared.
  3. Check multiplayer: Verify matchmaking, crossplay, server population, DLC requirements, and platform-specific restrictions.
  4. Check mods: Look for Steam Workshop, the game’s supported mod tools, and version compatibility with popular community mods.
  5. Check cloud saves and achievements: Treat both as title-specific and keep manual save backups.
  6. Check DLC parity: Compare the exact edition, expansions, bonus content, patches, and regional availability.
  7. Check Steam Deck/Linux compatibility: Proton support does not guarantee that every launcher, anti-cheat system, or multiplayer mode works.
  8. Check refunds: Read the live policy before purchase, especially for preorders, bundles, and played games.
  9. Check preservation needs: If you choose GOG, download and back up the installers, important patches, saves, and documentation.

GOG GALAXY can aggregate games from other platforms into one interface, but that does not transfer ownership or turn a Steam purchase into a GOG version. Likewise, buying a game on GOG does not provide access to the Steam edition’s Workshop, Steam Families, or Steam Deck integration.
