The giveaway has ended; the official campaign page now says so.
What was GOG’s Freedom To Buy campaign?
Launched on August 1, 2025, the campaign framed its giveaway as a response to games disappearing from digital storefronts. GOG’s page said: “For 48 hours, these games are free, because if a game is legal, you should be free to buy it.” It also stated, “We believe that if a game is legal, you should be able to buy it now and decades from now,” and “Freedom to buy is freedom to create.” These are GOG and campaign statements, not independent legal findings about every game or removal.
The campaign page’s disclaimer says that all games in Freedom To Buy are legal in their respective jurisdictions. That qualification matters: legal status can depend on where a game is offered, and the page’s statement should not be read as a ruling about every jurisdiction or storefront decision.
Which games were included?
The official campaign page listed 13 entries. “Agony + Agony UNRATED” counted as one entry in the campaign list.

The titles span adult-oriented and otherwise controversial content; the campaign did not establish that every entry had been banned or delisted elsewhere.
Why did GOG describe it as a protest against censorship?
Engadget reported that the campaign followed recent Steam and itch.io delistings involving games with violent or sexually explicit content. In its account, Steam’s decision was tied to a rule requiring games to meet payment processor standards, while itch.io cited pressure on its payment partners. Those explanations are Engadget’s reporting; the campaign page and the cited coverage do not establish the full circumstances of every removal or provide a broader count of affected games.

GOG’s stated emphasis was preservation as well as access: its argument was that games should remain available over time, including so older works can continue to run on current hardware. The opposing considerations described in the coverage were storefront rules and payment-partner requirements. Distinguishing those rationales is important: a platform removal, a payment processor’s standards, and a government ban are not the same thing.
What does POSTAL 2 have to do with the story?
Engadget singled out POSTAL 2 as an example, reporting that it was banned in New Zealand in 2004 and delisted from the German version of Steam in 2016. Those examples provide context for the campaign’s argument, but they do not show that all 13 campaign entries were banned or removed from other stores.
