What happens to a Preservation Program game after it leaves GOG?
In December 2024, GOG announced that Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft II would leave its store on December 13, 2024. GOG said that even if a game in the GOG Preservation Program was no longer available for sale, it would continue to maintain and update the game so it remained compatible with modern and future systems. The GOG Team described this as an ongoing policy, not a promise covering every title GOG delists. Read GOG’s announcement.

GOG’s current program page describes the initiative as keeping classic games playable on modern systems after their developers stop supporting them. The page also identifies DRM-free games and dedicated technical support as parts of the program. See the GOG Preservation Program page.
Does the policy cover every delisted GOG game?
No. GOG tied continued maintenance after a sale ends to a title’s inclusion in the Preservation Program. Delisting by itself does not establish that GOG will maintain a game or update it for compatibility. Check whether the specific title is listed as part of the program rather than assuming the policy applies across the store.

What does it mean for people who already own the game?
For the two Warcraft games, GOG said existing purchasers would retain access to the program’s maintained versions and their offline installers after the titles left the store. The GOG Team wrote, “And because GOG is DRM-free, you’ll have lifetime access to your Offline Installers.” That is GOG’s wording; the announcement does not define how “lifetime” would apply in every future service-continuity scenario.
Continued access for prior purchasers is distinct from the ability to buy a game. GOG’s announcement did not say that people who had not bought a title before its removal would retain a right to obtain it afterward.

How has the Preservation Program changed?
GOG announced the program on November 13, 2024, with an initial group of 100 classic games from its catalog. It said those games would have updated, improved, or quality-tested builds. That was the launch scope, not the program’s current size. Read the launch announcement.
When accessed on October 8, 2026, GOG’s program page displayed 305 games and 1,685 improvements. Those are live catalog totals that can change; they are not permanent counts or an independent audit of results.

How to assess a particular delisted game
- Check program status. Look for the title on GOG’s Preservation Program page. The continued-maintenance policy GOG announced applies to program titles.
- Separate ownership from availability. GOG’s statement about maintaining versions and keeping offline installers concerned existing purchasers; it did not establish post-delisting purchase access for non-owners.
- Read the title-specific notice. For the Warcraft games, GOG named December 13, 2024, as the removal date. Do not infer an explanation for a delisting unless GOG provides one.
