Gold Ore: What It Is, How It Forms, and How It’s Assayed

Gold ore can occur in bedrock or sediment, but visible signs alone cannot reveal gold content or commercial value. Representative sampling and assay measure grade; deposit size matters too.

Gold ore is rock or other mineralized material containing gold at a concentration of geological or economic interest. A rock that looks promising—or even shows visible gold—is not automatically ore of commercial value: only representative sampling and an assay can measure its gold content, and deposit size matters alongside grade.

What counts as gold ore?

Gold ore is not defined by a particular color, sparkle, or visible grain. The term refers to gold-bearing material considered in geological or economic terms; determining how much gold it contains requires measurement. A specimen may contain gold without having a grade or scale that makes it an economically workable deposit.

How gold deposits form: lode and placer

The USGS distinguishes two principal types of commercial gold deposits: lode (primary) and placer (secondary) deposits. Lode gold is found in bedrock, where mineralizing processes deposited or concentrated it. Placer gold forms when weathering and erosion release gold from source rock and natural processes concentrate it in sediments.

Deposit type Setting and origin
Lode (primary) Gold in bedrock, concentrated by mineralizing processes.
Placer (secondary) Gold concentrated in sediment after weathering and erosion of source material.

These categories describe geological settings; neither one, on its own, establishes a deposit’s grade, recoverability, or commercial value. The USGS overview of gold prospecting explains the distinction.

What gold can look like in rock

Gold occurs mainly as native metal or in alloys, but it can also be associated with sulfide and telluride minerals. Those associations can provide geological clues, but a rock’s appearance cannot quantify its gold content. Color, metallic-looking flecks, or other visible features do not establish that a specimen contains gold—or how much.

For that reason, the question “Is it really gold?” is not settled reliably by visual inspection. Identification of a mineral and measurement of gold concentration are different tasks.

How an assay measures gold

An assay analyzes a sample to determine its gold content. The result is meaningful for the material tested; it represents a larger body of rock only if the sample was collected and prepared to represent that material. A single attractive fragment cannot establish the grade of an entire vein, claim, or deposit.

The USGS identifies fire assay as a commonly used method for determining gold and silver in mineralized rocks. Analytical methods require appropriate professional equipment and controls. Fire assay involves high heat, while chemical extraction approaches can involve hazardous substances; readers seeking a measurement should contact a qualified assay laboratory rather than attempt extraction themselves. The USGS discusses analytical and recovery approaches in its gold geology and resources bulletin.

Grade is not the same as deposit size

Grade describes the concentration of valuable material in rock, expressed using mass- or volume-based units appropriate to the material and measurement. Deposit size is a separate consideration: a grade result from a small sample does not reveal how much mineralized material exists overall. The USGS identifies both average gold content and deposit size as central concerns in assessing a lode deposit.

Nor does confirming gold alone establish commercial value. Evaluation also depends on whether the gold can be recovered and on other economic factors. A visible grain, a positive assay from one sample, and a commercially workable deposit are three different conclusions.
