In Elden Ring, a Golden Seed increases the number of times you can use your Sacred Flask before it needs refilling. You can spend seeds after resting at a Site of Grace. The upgrade tops out at 14 total flask uses, and the listed progression requires 30 Golden Seeds to reach it.
What does a Golden Seed do?
A Golden Seed adds a use to your Sacred Flask. Bandai Namco’s official gameplay guide says Golden Seeds are found at the base of small golden trees and increase how many flasks you can use before refilling. After resting at a Site of Grace, use the seed to upgrade your flask charges, as described in the Eldenpedia item reference.
The in-game item text, reproduced by Eldenpedia, describes it as “A golden seed, found at the base of an illusory tree.” Its lore says the seeds flew from the Erdtree when the Elden Ring was shattered, scattering across the lands.
How many Golden Seeds do you need?
The item reference lists a starting pool of four flask uses and a maximum of 14. The number of seeds needed rises as you upgrade:

The upgrade thresholds and totals are from the Eldenpedia table. An Elden Ring Wiki checklist marked updated 2026-09-11 reports 45 Golden Seed sources in the world. That guide count is not an official publisher statistic; if accurate for your route, it means you can reach the listed cap without collecting every source.
Where can you find Golden Seeds?
Seeds are distributed across the Lands Between. The item reference lists sources in the following regions and areas; they include golden saplings, enemy drops, and quest-related events rather than only tree bases:

- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition
- Chapel of Anticipation, Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula, and Stormveil Castle
- Liurnia, Caelid, Altus Plateau, and Siofra River
- Ainsel River, Mountaintops of the Giants, and Consecrated Snowfield
- Elphael and Crumbling Farum Azula
For extra flask uses early, the checklist recommends gathering the Limgrave, Weeping Peninsula, and Stormveil sources first, then picking up seeds as you follow the main route. This is a route suggestion, not a required progression order; consult the linked checklist for individual locations and directions.
Mohgwyn Palace route warning
The checklist flags two Mohgwyn Palace sources as potentially mutually exclusive if you collect one and rest before collecting the other. This is a guide-reported edge case, not a rule established by the official publisher guide. If collecting both matters to your run, verify the current route instructions before resting between them.

Should you choose Golden Seed as your keepsake?
Golden Seed is an option during character creation. The keepsake guide says it grants one additional Flask charge immediately, which makes it useful if you want a little more healing or FP capacity early, depending on how you allocate flask uses.
It is an early-timing advantage, not a permanently exclusive item: the world contains many other seeds, and the listed upgrade requires 30 to reach the cap. The keepsake guide also describes Stonesword Keys as a way to open imp-sealed areas. Choose Golden Seed for an immediate flask charge; choose Stonesword Keys if opening those sealed areas sooner matters more to you.
