GoldenEye 007 cheats by platform
“GoldenEye 007” has been released in forms that handle cheats differently. Treating every version as if it used the same input method is the main reason players conclude that the codes are broken.

| Version | How cheats are obtained | Where the action happens |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo 64 | Button combinations can activate effects or unlock cheat options. | During a level, in the main or cheat menu, or from mission select, depending on the code. |
| Nintendo Switch re-release | Some original-style button codes remain supported after translating the N64 buttons to Switch controls. | The same broad contexts as the relevant original code, using the Switch control layout. |
| Xbox re-release | Cheats are earned by completing mission challenges at specified difficulties and times. | After earning a cheat, turn it on in Cheat Options. |
The practical distinction is between entering a code and unlocking a cheat. An in-level code produces an effect in that play session. A cheat-menu code unlocks the corresponding option for that agent’s save file. Xbox challenge rewards are also unlocks, but they are earned through performance rather than a button sequence.

How cheat codes work on the original Nintendo 64
The Nintendo 64 release contains several code categories. Before entering anything, identify which category your code belongs to, because each has a different input location.
#1 Best Overall
In-level codes
These combinations are entered while you are actively playing a mission. They activate an effect for gameplay rather than adding a permanent option to the save file. Start the level first, then enter the sequence with the N64 controller’s D-pad, C-buttons, and L/R buttons exactly as documented for that effect.
If you enter an in-level sequence at the title screen, mission-select screen, or a menu, the game is not listening for that type of input. Return to the mission and enter it during play.
Cheat-menu unlock codes
Some combinations are designed for the main menu or the cheat menu. A successful entry unlocks the relevant cheat option for that agent’s file. This is different from an in-level activation: you are adding an option that can be selected later, not merely turning on an effect in the current mission.
Use the menu location specified by the particular code. A sequence intended for the cheat menu will not become an in-level effect simply because the buttons are correct.

Mission-select level codes
Level-unlock combinations are entered from mission select. They are neither in-level effects nor cheat-menu unlocks. If your goal is to open a mission, navigate to mission select before entering the code and keep the input context separate from the other two categories.
N64 entry checklist
- Confirm that the code is for the original Nintendo 64 release.
- Read its category: in-level, main or cheat menu, or mission select.
- Go to that exact screen or start the mission if the code is an in-level sequence.
- Use the N64 buttons named by the code, including the D-pad, C-buttons, and L/R buttons.
- Look for the expected result: an immediate gameplay effect, a newly available cheat option, or an unlocked mission.
If nothing happens, the first checks are context and version, not the speed of your button presses. A correct N64 sequence entered in the wrong place is still ineffective.
Do the codes work on Nintendo Switch?
The 2023 Nintendo Switch re-release supports some of the original-style codes. It does not mean that every N64 sequence is guaranteed to work, so use a code specifically identified as supported for the Switch release.

Switch instructions must map the original N64 button names to the controls you are using. The D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, and other inputs do not have the same labels as an N64 controller. Translate each button before attempting the sequence rather than reading the N64 notation literally.

The GameSpot guide dated January 27, 2023, describes this process as awkward. That is a control-layout issue, not evidence that the game has removed every code. A compatible N64-style controller can make the familiar layout easier to follow, but the guide does not state that one is required.
Switch procedure
- Verify that the guide lists the code as usable on the Switch re-release.
- Write down the N64 sequence and map every button to the Switch control layout in your current controller configuration.
- Identify the code’s context: mission play, a menu, or mission select.
- Open that context and enter the translated sequence without substituting a different screen.
- Check for the effect or newly unlocked option before trying a second code.
Different Switch control configurations can change which physical button you press, so explain the mapping in terms of the labels shown by your controller rather than assuming that every player’s setup is identical.
Why Xbox does not accept the old button codes
The Xbox re-release does not provide the original-style code-entry system. Pressing an N64 sequence on an Xbox controller will not unlock the classic cheats. Instead, each cheat is tied to a mission challenge with a required difficulty and completion time.

How an Xbox unlock works
- Find the challenge requirement for the cheat you want.
- Play the specified mission on at least the listed difficulty.
- Finish within the stated time.
- After the reward unlocks, open Cheat Options.
- Toggle the cheat there before starting or replaying the mission.
Difficulty and time are part of the requirement. Completing the right mission on an easier setting, or meeting the time on a different difficulty, does not satisfy the listed challenge.

Documented Xbox challenge examples
| Cheat or reward | Mission | Required difficulty | Time or condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paintball Mode | Dam | Secret Agent | Under 2:40 |
| Invincibility | Facility | 00 Agent | Under 2:05 |
| DK Mode | Runway | Agent | Under 5:00 |
| Infinite Ammo | Control | Secret Agent | Under 10:00 |
| Egyptian level | All main story levels | 00 Agent or higher | Complete the required story set |
These are challenge conditions, not button codes. The full Xbox unlock list contains additional rewards, so use the entry for the specific cheat rather than assuming that one example applies to every option.
A restriction that can block further unlocks
The Xbox guide cautions that playing a level with cheats enabled prevents you from unlocking other cheats in that level. If you are attempting a timed challenge, leave existing cheats off until the challenge is complete. Once the reward is recorded, you can enable the unlocked option from Cheat Options for ordinary play.

Check the release first
Confirm whether you are on original N64 hardware, the Switch re-release, or the Xbox re-release. An N64 sequence cannot be used as an Xbox substitute because Xbox uses challenge unlocks.
Check the input location
On N64 and Switch, determine whether the sequence belongs during a mission, in a menu, or at mission select. Move to that exact context before entering it. The categories are not interchangeable.
Best Value
Check the control translation
On Switch, translate every N64 button to the controls shown by your current setup. A sequence can fail if one C-button or shoulder input was mapped incorrectly, even when the rest of the order is right.
Check the requirement, not just the time
On Xbox, verify the mission, difficulty, and time together. A fast completion on the wrong difficulty does not count, and a correct mission with an enabled cheat can block other unlocks.
Look for the expected type of result
- An in-level code should affect the current gameplay session.
- A menu code should add an option to the agent’s file.
- A mission-select code should open the relevant level.
- An Xbox challenge should create an entry that can be toggled in Cheat Options after completion.
These outcomes are different. If you are looking for a menu item after entering an in-level effect, you may be checking for the wrong result even when the input was accepted.

Which version should you use for classic cheat behavior?
Choose the original Nintendo 64 release if you specifically want the broadest traditional button-code experience, including separate in-level, menu, and mission-select categories. Choose Switch if you want some of that style on a modern console and are comfortable translating the controls. Choose Xbox if you prefer a progression system in which cheats are earned through mission performance rather than entered as secret sequences.
For Xbox players, the challenge system also changes how cheats fit into a playthrough: you must first meet the mission target, and enabling cheats can disqualify additional unlock attempts in that level. For N64 and Switch players, the main discipline is entering each code in its intended context.
Bottom line for “Do cheat codes work in GoldenEye 007?”
They do, but “GoldenEye 007” has no single cheat system across all releases. Original N64 codes work when entered in the correct category and location. Switch retains some of those codes after button translation. Xbox replaces old button entry with mission challenges and a Cheat Options toggle. Identify the platform before following any guide, then match the input method, screen, difficulty, and timing requirement to that version.
