GoldenEye 007 Multiplayer Explained: Xbox Split-Screen vs Switch Online Play

Yes, but the multiplayer options depend on the platform. The 2023 Xbox release of GoldenEye 007 has local split-screen multiplayer for two to four players. The Nintendo Switch version supports four players locally or online through the Nintendo 64 library included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Both are re-releases of the 1997 Nintendo 64 game, not the separate 2010 Wii title.

Xbox describes the game as having “a truly classic split-screen multiplayer mode for up to four players” on its official product page. Nintendo’s announcement says the Switch version supports spy-versus-spy play “locally or online” in its four-player mode.

What “GoldenEye remake” usually refers to

People often call the modern version a remake, but the Xbox and Switch releases are re-releases of the 1997 Nintendo 64 game. They preserve the original campaign and competitive multiplayer concept while adding platform-specific features and modern distribution. Calling it a remake can also create confusion with GoldenEye 007 released for Wii in 2010, which is a different game.

The Xbox version launched on January 12, 2023. Nintendo announced the Switch release on January 27, 2023. The dates and platform descriptions come from the respective publishers, so they should not be treated as evidence that every version of the game has identical multiplayer functionality.

Nintendo’s 2010 Wii page describes its own GoldenEye 007 product. That game is not the release covered by the Xbox and Switch announcements here. If you are checking a listing, trailer or second-hand disc, verify the platform and year before assuming that its multiplayer rules match the 2023 re-release.

Multiplayer support at a glance

Platform and release Players Type of multiplayer How it is accessed
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, released January 12, 2023 Two to four locally; described as up to four players Shared-screen or split-screen local multiplayer Xbox product and store listings; the official listings do not advertise online multiplayer
Nintendo Switch, announced January 27, 2023 Four players Local multiplayer or online multiplayer Included in the Nintendo 64 collection for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members
Nintendo 64 original, 1997 Not restated in the 2023 Xbox listing The source material identifies the modern releases as re-releases of this game Original hardware and current re-release access are separate products
Wii, 2010 Not comparable from the 2023 announcements A separate GoldenEye 007 game Do not use its specifications to answer questions about the Xbox or Switch re-release

The key distinction is simple: choose Xbox for the documented classic local split-screen experience, or choose Switch if you need the publisher-documented option to play locally or online.

How multiplayer works on Xbox

Local split-screen for two to four players

On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, multiplayer is designed for people playing on the same console and display. Xbox’s store listing specifies local multiplayer for two to four players and shared or split screen. Its product page describes the mode as “up to four players.” That means a single Xbox can host a four-person match, provided each participant has a usable controller.

The display is divided into player views during a match. This is the traditional GoldenEye arrangement rather than a mode in which each player uses a separate console. Everyone must be in the same physical location, and the quality of the experience depends on screen size, viewing distance and controller availability.

What Xbox’s official listing does not promise

The Xbox product and store pages promote local split-screen multiplayer. They do not advertise an online multiplayer mode. Therefore, you should not assume that an Xbox player can invite someone playing remotely through Xbox network features. The documented Xbox feature is local play; any other network behavior would need confirmation from a current in-game or platform support page.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Practical Xbox setup

  1. Install the Xbox release on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S and launch it from the console.
  2. Connect and sign in the controllers you plan to use. The supported local range is two to four players.
  3. Open the game’s multiplayer or competitive mode from the main menu. Menu wording can differ slightly by platform update, so follow the on-screen labels rather than expecting a specific button sequence.
  4. Choose a match setup, have the other players join when prompted, and start the round.

The official listing also mentions campaign missions, unlockable cheat modes, Xbox achievements and other enhancements. Those additions do not change the central multiplayer limitation: the advertised competitive mode is local split-screen.

How multiplayer works on Nintendo Switch

Four players locally or online

Nintendo describes the Switch release as supporting four-player multiplayer both locally and online. “Locally” covers players sharing a console and display, while “online” allows the competitive mode to connect players over the internet. This is the clearest platform choice if remote multiplayer is the deciding factor.

The Switch version is part of the Nintendo 64 collection available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That membership route is part of Nintendo’s release description, rather than a standalone retail-multiplayer specification. Membership catalogues and access rules can change, so check the current Nintendo Switch Online page and your account’s regional terms before starting.

Controller options

Nintendo says the game is fully playable with the Nintendo 64 controller for Switch. That controller is compatible, not mandatory. You can use other supported Switch control schemes if they suit your group; the announcement does not state that every accessory or configuration is supported, so confirm compatibility for any specialist controller before buying it.

Practical Switch setup

  1. Make sure your Nintendo account has access to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in the region where you intend to play.
  2. Open the Nintendo 64 application and select GoldenEye 007 from the available games.
  3. For a same-room match, connect the controllers for up to four participants and select the local multiplayer option.
  4. For remote play, select the online multiplayer option and follow the game’s room or friend-joining prompts. All players should verify that their Nintendo accounts and network connections meet the current service requirements.
  5. Choose the competitive match settings and begin the game after every participant has joined.

Nintendo’s announcement specifically calls out “round-after-round” first-person competitive action. It does not provide a separate player-count figure for an online mode beyond four-player multiplayer, so four is the supported maximum stated by the publisher.

Local versus online: what the difference means

Local play

Local multiplayer puts everyone in the same room, using one console. On Xbox, this is the documented multiplayer format and is split across the same television. On Switch, local play is one of two documented formats. It is the better fit for a group that wants the original couch-competition feel and does not want to depend on internet connections or account matchmaking.

Online play

Online multiplayer is explicitly documented for the Switch release. It is useful when the participants are in different locations, but it introduces practical requirements that local play does not: each person needs access to the game through the relevant Nintendo service, a Nintendo account configured for online use and a stable connection. The publisher information establishes that online four-player play exists; it does not publish latency targets, matchmaking regions or a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

Why Xbox and Switch answers differ

The two versions are distributed through different platform ecosystems. Xbox’s official description focuses on preserving the classic split-screen mode, while Nintendo’s announcement highlights local and online four-player play through the Nintendo 64 collection. These are platform-specific feature descriptions, not evidence that one console’s software is malfunctioning or missing a hidden setting.

Choosing the right version for your group

Your priority Best-supported choice Reason
Four people on one television Xbox or Switch Both platforms document local multiplayer for up to four players.
Playing with friends in different homes Switch Nintendo explicitly documents online four-player multiplayer.
Classic Xbox couch multiplayer Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S Xbox advertises shared or split-screen local play for two to four players.
Nintendo 64-style controller Switch, with the compatible N64 controller Nintendo confirms compatibility; the accessory is optional.
No subscription-based collection access Check the current platform terms first The Switch release is tied to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack access, while Xbox store access information can change over time.

There is no official multiplayer-usage statistic in the publisher material, so player-count specifications should not be interpreted as a measure of popularity or server activity. “Four players” describes the feature limit, not how many people are currently playing.

Access, subscriptions and changing availability

Nintendo identifies the Switch game as part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That is the access route described in the announcement, not a promise that the title can be purchased separately outside the collection. Check the current membership catalogue, regional availability and renewal terms before subscribing solely to play this game.

  • Experience a mind-bending original storyline as recurring hallucinations blur the line between memory and reality.
  • Investigate a detailed, decrepit asylum through point-and-click adventure gameplay.
  • Solve evocative challenges that reward wit and observation.
  • Enter an engrossing atmosphere with a memorable soundtrack inspired by 1980s horror films and John Carpenter.

The Xbox store listing includes Game Pass access information. Because catalogue inclusion and membership terms can change, verify the live Xbox listing for your account and region. The listing’s access information should be treated separately from the multiplayer specification: it tells you how the game may be obtained, while the product description tells you that local split-screen play is included.

Neither source establishes a current price, a permanent subscription benefit or a separate paid online pass for this specific game. Avoid relying on an old screenshot or a third-party listing when deciding whether you can launch the title today.

Common misunderstandings and fixes

“I bought the Xbox version, so I can play online with a friend.”

The documented Xbox mode is local split-screen. If remote play is essential, the Switch release is the version whose publisher announcement explicitly includes online multiplayer.

“The N64 controller is required on Switch.”

It is not. Nintendo confirms that the N64 controller for Switch works with the game, but does not call it mandatory. Use a supported controller you already own unless you specifically want the original-style layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The 2010 Wii game proves the 2023 version has the same features.”

The Wii release is a different game. Its existence does not establish the Xbox or Switch feature set. Identify the 2023 re-release before comparing modes.

“Four-player online means four separate online platforms are guaranteed everywhere.”

Nintendo’s wording supports four-player online multiplayer on Switch. Xbox’s official pages support local split-screen and do not advertise online play. Do not generalize the Switch description to Xbox.

“A membership mention means the price is fixed forever.”

Subscription catalogues and pricing can change by region and date. Confirm the current terms directly with Nintendo or Xbox before purchasing hardware or a membership for this game.

Bottom line for prospective players

GoldenEye 007 does have multiplayer in the 2023 releases, but the mode differs by platform. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S provide the classic local split-screen experience for two to four players. Nintendo Switch provides four-player local play and, according to Nintendo’s release announcement, online play as well. The Switch copy is accessed through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, and the Nintendo 64 controller is an optional compatible accessory.

For a same-room match, either platform meets the documented requirement. For friends who need to play from separate homes, choose the Switch version because online multiplayer is the feature Nintendo explicitly lists.
