The name does not guarantee a particular formula or that a product will be gentle. Check its ingredients and directions, and choose an exfoliation method that suits your skin.
What is gommage?
In skincare, gommage describes both an exfoliation technique and products used for it. A typical method involves applying a cream or gel, allowing it to set briefly, and then gently rubbing or rolling it off. The exact method varies by product; follow its label rather than assuming all gommage products work alike. L’Oréal Paris describes the technique, while manufacturer instructions such as La Roche-Posay Middle East’s product page illustrate that directions are product-specific.
Exfoliation removes dead cells from the skin’s outer layer. The word “gommage” alone does not tell you whether a product relies on physical action, chemical exfoliants, or both, so inspect the ingredient list and directions.

- Mechanical exfoliation uses physical action, such as rubbing with a scrub or tool.
- Chemical exfoliation uses ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).
A gommage product may involve physical rubbing or rolling, chemical ingredients, or a combination. Do not infer its mechanism or strength from its name. For AHA products, the FDA says the effect depends on the acid type and concentration, pH, and other ingredients; those factors make it unwise to generalize about a product from the word “gommage.” FDA guidance on alpha hydroxy acids explains these variables.
How to use a gommage product
Directions differ between products. Check whether the product should be applied to dry or damp skin, how long it should set, how to remove it, and how often the maker says to use it. Do not scrub harder or leave it on longer than directed to try to increase its effect.

- Use a gentle touch and rinse with lukewarm water when rinsing is part of the directions.
- Moisturize after exfoliating.
- Do not exfoliate over open cuts, wounds, or sunburned skin.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) gives these as general at-home exfoliation precautions, not an assessment of any one gommage product. Its guidance also notes that sensitive skin may sting or burn during exfoliation. Read the AAD’s at-home exfoliation guidance.
Who should be cautious?
Method matters as much as the product label. The AAD cautions that mechanical exfoliation may be too irritating for people with dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin. Retinoids, retinol, and benzoyl peroxide can also make skin more sensitive or cause peeling; exfoliating while using them may worsen dryness or acne breakouts. If you have a skin condition or are unsure whether exfoliation is appropriate, seek advice from a dermatologist.

How often should you exfoliate?
There is no single schedule that fits every skin type and method. Frequency depends on your skin’s response and how aggressive the exfoliation is; the AAD advises that more aggressive methods should generally be used less often. Follow the product’s stated frequency, and reduce or stop use if you develop irritation rather than treating the product name as a reason to exfoliate more often.

- Ingredients and action: Look for named exfoliating acids or physical particles and actions. The term “gommage” does not establish what is in the formula.
- Directions: Confirm the application surface, setting time, removal method, and suggested frequency on the specific product.
- Skin suitability: Consider your skin sensitivity and other products in your routine; a general product claim cannot guarantee that it will not irritate you.
- Claims: Treat advertised results as manufacturer claims, not independent clinical proof.
Cosmetics generally do not receive FDA premarket approval, with exceptions such as color additives; marketers are responsible for the safety of their products. “FDA approved” is therefore not a general status for cosmetic gommage products.
