Either Google Cloud Compute Engine or a VPS can run a software encoder for an always-on YouTube stream. The better choice depends on the specific machine and plan, total cost including outbound data, encoding workload, network limits, and how you detect and recover from failures. Compute Engine publishes VM-family availability targets, but those do not guarantee an uninterrupted stream end to end. Since no VPS provider or plan is specified, a price or universal winner would be misleading.
Start with the system you are choosing
A hosted machine runs the encoder process; it does not automatically provide the video being streamed. Decide how recordings or other source media will reach that machine, then compare the compute, network, storage, and operating work for the complete setup. YouTube supports encoder-based streams using software or hardware, so a dedicated hardware encoder is not inherently required for a cloud VM.
For a continuously repeated recording, the practical design includes source files accessible to the remote machine, an encoder configured for YouTube, a persistent process or restart mechanism, and a way to notice when the stream has stopped. YouTube’s settings tell you how to configure the outgoing stream; they do not size the VM or arrange media delivery for you.
Compare the actual plan, not “Google Cloud” with “a VPS”
A VPS is not one standardized product. Before deciding, select a named VPS provider and plan, a region, the number of simultaneous streams, and the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Then compare those specifics against a Compute Engine configuration.

| Decision factor | What to check on Compute Engine | What to check on the VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | VM runtime, boot and persistent disks, applicable IP or network charges, and internet egress. Google describes billing across VM, networking, and storage; actual totals depend on configuration and usage. Google Cloud Compute Engine | Plan price, included transfer, overage rates, storage or backup charges, and setup fees. Exact terms depend on the selected provider and plan. |
| Availability and recovery | Applicable VM-family availability terms, maintenance behavior, live migration, monitoring, and how the encoder reconnects. Google’s published targets concern the VM product, not the complete path from source media to YouTube. | Provider’s availability terms, host-failure and reboot behavior, maintenance policy, monitoring options, and restart or reconnect process. These cannot be compared without a named provider and plan. |
| Network fit | Region and route to YouTube ingest, machine-type bandwidth behavior, internet-egress limits, and charges for the selected tier and destination. Do not treat a published maximum as guaranteed sustained throughput. Compute Engine network bandwidth and VPC quotas | Included transfer, any speed or per-flow limits, overage policy, and route to the chosen YouTube ingest endpoint. A generous monthly transfer allowance does not by itself establish a sustained upload rate. |
| Encoding capacity | Whether the VM can encode the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and number of outputs under sustained load; confirm through configuration-specific evaluation rather than assuming a machine size. | CPU model and allocation, any acceleration, and whether the plan can sustain the intended encoder workload. No general VPS specification establishes capacity. |
| Operations | OS updates, process supervision, alerts, secure stream-key storage, reconnect behavior, and configuration backups. | The same operational responsibilities apply unless the provider explicitly manages them; verify what the plan actually includes. |
What Compute Engine’s published figures do—and do not—tell you
Google’s Compute Engine product page, accessed in 2026, advertises 99.9% availability for most VM families and 99.95% for memory-optimized VMs, and says a VM can be live-migrated to another host in the same zone. These are Google’s product-level claims, not a measured 24/7 YouTube stream success rate or a guarantee that the encoder, source files, network path, and YouTube ingest all remain available.
The same page gives an e2-micro starting price of $0.01 and Premium Tier outbound transfer starting at $0.08 per GB. These are indicative headline figures, not a quote for a continuously running encoder. It also lists up to 200 GB per month outbound on Standard Tier and free inbound transfer; eligibility and applicable terms depend on the configuration. Persistent Disk starts at $0.04 per GB per month, separately from VM pricing. Verify the selected region, tier, allowance, and current rates in Google’s pricing calculator before budgeting. Google Cloud Compute Engine
Network capacity also needs a workload-specific check. Google says bandwidth is accounted per VM, and maximum egress depends on machine type and conditions; its networking documentation distinguishes destinations and describes per-flow and project internet-egress limits. A YouTube ingest endpoint is external, so a large VM-to-VM bandwidth figure should not be treated as the speed your stream will sustain to YouTube. Compute Engine network bandwidth and VPC quotas

Configure the encoder for YouTube, whichever host you choose
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency with a maximum of four seconds, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Consult YouTube’s current settings table for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than copying a number from a different format. These are YouTube settings recommendations, not evidence that every VM or VPS can encode a given workload. YouTube encoder settings

Use the stream key and server details shown in YouTube Studio for the intended live stream, and keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. If YouTube drops the connection, the encoder must reconnect; evaluate and configure that behavior rather than treating host availability as automatic stream recovery. For a first-time live-stream setup, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the planned launch. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Budget the continuous workload before committing
For a fair monthly comparison, estimate all recurring charges for the same stream workload and region. A continuously running encoder can incur VM charges even during quiet periods, while outbound video transfer accumulates as long as the stream is sending. Include disks and media storage as well as network charges; for a VPS, include transfer caps and overages rather than comparing only its advertised monthly plan price.

- Record the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and number of concurrent outputs.
- Estimate outbound data for the intended schedule using the encoded bitrate, then check the selected provider’s billing rules, included transfer, and limits.
- Include media storage, boot and persistent disks, backups, IP or other applicable charges, and setup costs.
- Check that network limits and encoder capacity apply to the actual stream-to-YouTube path, not just an advertised maximum.
- Recalculate for the exact region and plan before launch; the available evidence does not establish a universal monthly total or a VPS price.
When each hosted option makes sense
Choose Compute Engine when its controls and terms fit
Compute Engine is a candidate if you want Google Cloud infrastructure controls and can evaluate its VM, network, storage, and operational costs for a particular configuration. Its published availability terms and live-migration description are useful inputs, but they do not remove the need to supervise the encoder or validate the end-to-end stream.
Choose a VPS when a specific plan is a better fit
A VPS may suit an operator whose selected plan offers the required sustained network capacity, transfer terms, compute allocation, and recovery options at an acceptable total cost. Because no provider or plan is named here, there is no evidence-based basis to claim that VPS hosting is cheaper, more reliable, or easier than Compute Engine in general.

Choose only after you can fill in the same workload for both candidates: full recurring cost, source-media arrangement, sustained encoding capacity, outbound network terms, provider availability terms, and a tested recovery procedure. If any of those remains unknown, the comparison is not yet apples-to-apples.

Common problems to prevent or diagnose
The stream will not start
For a first-time YouTube live setup, check whether live streaming has been enabled; activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm that the stream key and server settings match the intended YouTube Studio stream, and that the encoder is using a supported configuration.
The encoder drops frames or cannot sustain the output
Check sustained CPU use and network behavior under the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Reduce the workload or select a more capable configuration if the encoder cannot keep up; a machine-family bandwidth maximum is not proof of suitable YouTube-ingest performance.

The stream disconnects and does not return
Verify the encoder process is supervised, its reconnect behavior is configured, and alerts reach someone who can respond. A VM availability target does not restart a failed encoder process or guarantee that YouTube will accept a reconnect.
The bill exceeds the estimate
Review VM runtime, disk usage, network tier, outbound transfer, and any plan caps or overage charges against the actual region and usage. Headline starting prices and allowances are not complete workload estimates.
FAQ
Does YouTube require a hardware encoder for a cloud VM?
No. YouTube describes encoders as software or hardware; a software encoder can run on a hosted machine if its capacity and configuration suit the stream.
Can an availability percentage be read as guaranteed stream uptime?
No. A VM-level availability claim does not cover the source media, encoder process, network route, or YouTube ingest as one end-to-end service.
Is a Compute Engine VM automatically cheaper than a VPS?
No general comparison is supported without a specific VPS plan and matching workload. Compare recurring compute, storage, network, transfer, and operational costs for the same configuration.
