You can schedule a Google Compute Engine VM with a regional instance schedule policy, then configure the VM’s encoder and YouTube Live settings separately. The schedule starts and stops the VM; it does not guarantee that the encoder starts, that YouTube accepts the feed, or that a broadcast goes live. This guide covers both sides, the timing and permission requirements, and ways to diagnose failures.
What the VM schedule does—and what it does not
A Compute Engine instance schedule is a regional resource policy with recurring start and stop times. You attach it to a VM in the same region. It can automate the VM’s lifecycle, but it does not configure or supervise the encoder running inside the VM, nor does it complete YouTube Live Control Room actions for you. Google Cloud’s instance schedule documentation describes the policy; YouTube’s separate encoder workflow is covered in its Live streaming setup guidance.
Plan the chain as separate stages: the schedule requests a VM start; the operating system boots; the encoder launches and sends video to YouTube; YouTube displays a preview and stream-health status; and, where required, you take the broadcast live in Live Control Room. A failure or delay at any stage can leave the channel offline even if the VM schedule ran.
Before you create the schedule
Check the VM and regional constraints
- Identify the VM’s region. The schedule policy and VM must be in the same region.
- A VM can have only one instance schedule attached. One schedule can be attached to as many as 1,000 VMs, according to Google Cloud’s documentation.
- Do not use an instance schedule to stop a VM that has Local SSD disks. Check Google’s current instance schedule documentation for any other restrictions that apply to your configuration before rollout.
- A scheduled start is not a capacity guarantee: the VM might fail to start if the required resources are unavailable.
Confirm permissions
Google says the Compute Engine service agent needs the Compute Instance Admin (v1) role, or equivalent permissions that include compute.instances.start and compute.instances.stop, for scheduled operations to run. The user or service account creating and managing the schedule also needs the appropriate management permissions. Avoid removing the service agent’s required access; Google warns that doing so can disrupt schedules without an obvious notification. Use Cloud Audit Logs to investigate scheduled operations.

Choose a time zone and buffer
With gcloud or the API, specify an IANA time zone deliberately. If you omit it, the documented default is UTC. A DST-observing zone has skipped or repeated local times when clocks change; UTC avoids those seasonal shifts when fixed UTC timing works for your operation.
Google says an operation can begin up to 15 minutes after its nominal schedule time and recommends scheduling 15 minutes early when a particular operational time matters. It also warns that start and stop events less than 15 minutes apart can fail. YouTube recommends starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before an event so you can check the preview and stream health. Add further time for your own VM boot and encoder startup; the sources do not specify a universal boot or recovery allowance.
Create and attach a recurring instance schedule
You can create and manage an instance schedule in the Google Cloud console, with gcloud, or through the Compute Engine API. The console labels and layout can change; use the current instance schedule workflow in your project. The commands below show the gcloud approach. Replace the example values with your VM’s region, project, schedule times, and time zone.
1. Create the policy
Choose cron expressions for the recurring start and stop times. For example, a weekday start at 08:00 and stop at 18:00 in a chosen time zone can be represented as 0 8 * * 1-5 and 0 18 * * 1-5. These are example schedules, not a recommended broadcast timetable. Create a policy in the same region as the VM:

gcloud compute resource-policies create instance-schedule stream-schedule --region=REGION --vm-start-schedule='0 8 * * 1-5' --vm-stop-schedule='0 18 * * 1-5' --timezone='TIME_ZONE'
Use an IANA time-zone identifier for TIME_ZONE, such as the one appropriate to your operating location. Keep the start and stop events at least 15 minutes apart, and remember that the schedule’s operation can begin late.
2. Attach the policy to the VM
Attach the policy using the VM’s zone and the policy’s regional name:
gcloud compute instances add-resource-policies VM_NAME --zone=ZONE --resource-policies=stream-schedule

Confirm the policy’s region matches the VM’s region. Follow Google Cloud’s current command reference if flags or command behavior have changed since publication.
3. Verify the schedule and permissions
Check that the instance shows the intended schedule attachment and that the policy contains the intended start and stop recurrence and time zone. Then review Cloud Audit Logs around the planned operation time. A schedule definition alone does not prove that a VM successfully started or stopped.
Configure the VM to send video to YouTube
1. Create or select a YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use the stream’s encoder settings. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key; the key is credential-like information that identifies where the encoder should send its feed. Keep it private. If you reset the key, update the encoder configuration on the VM as well. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
2. Make the encoder start reliably after boot
Configure the VM so the encoder starts without relying on someone signing in interactively—for example, by using the operating system’s service or startup mechanism appropriate to your image and encoder. Set the encoder to use the YouTube Live server URL and stream key, and confirm that it selects the intended video source or playlist. The exact setup depends on the VM image and encoder; the instance schedule itself does not supply these settings.

Test the boot-to-feed sequence before relying on a recurring schedule. The encoder should start after a VM reboot, connect to YouTube, and show a preview in Live Control Room. Protect any file, environment variable, or service configuration containing the stream key from unauthorized access.
3. Decide how YouTube starts and ends the broadcast
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control whether the encoder can start or stop the YouTube broadcast. They are separate from the Compute Engine schedule. Without the appropriate YouTube behavior and a working encoder feed, starting a VM will not necessarily make the channel publicly live. For a scheduled stream, follow the Live Control Room preview and Go live steps when YouTube requires them; monitor the stream status and health rather than assuming VM state equals broadcast state. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and its Live Control Room guidance.
4. Plan the shutdown deliberately
Decide what should happen to the YouTube broadcast when the stop schedule runs. If the VM stops while the encoder is sending, the feed ends; how YouTube handles the broadcast depends on the stream settings and workflow. YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, so it does not establish that a 24/7 stream will be archived automatically. Review YouTube’s current guidance on ending a live stream and archiving before depending on a recording.

| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Compute Engine instance schedule policy | Recurring start and stop times for one or more selected VMs | Regional policy attached to instances; it does not orchestrate the encoder or YouTube actions. |
| Cloud Scheduler with Pub/Sub and Cloud Functions | More customized orchestration, such as selecting VM groups by labels or coordinating other resources | More components and maintenance. Google’s cited article describing this pattern is dated June 6, 2019; recheck current service documentation before implementing it. |
For a straightforward recurring VM schedule, the native instance schedule is the direct option. The older Google Cloud article about Cloud Scheduler, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Functions is useful as an example of customized orchestration, not as the current default for scheduling one VM. Google Cloud’s June 6, 2019 article describes that earlier pattern.

Timing, costs, and operating limits
Budget for late operations and YouTube checks
For a required public start time, schedule the VM early enough to absorb Google’s documented possible 15-minute delay, then allow time for boot, encoder connection, preview, and any manual Go live action. The additional boot and recovery allowance depends on your image and encoder and is not quantified by Google’s schedule documentation or YouTube’s preparation guidance. YouTube recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event and checking stream health.
Do not infer current cloud cost from old guidance
Compute Engine, disks, IP addresses, network egress, and any applicable free-tier eligibility can affect total cost. Current prices were not established by the cited materials, so check the live Google Cloud pricing pages for your selected resources and region before budgeting. Google’s 2019 article’s compute-charge framing should not be treated as current pricing.
Troubleshooting scheduled streams
- The VM did not start. Check Cloud Audit Logs for the scheduled operation, confirm the service agent still has start permission, verify the schedule is attached and in the VM’s region, and consider whether resources were unavailable.
- The VM started, but YouTube shows no feed. Check whether the operating system and encoder actually started, whether the encoder has the current server URL and stream key, and whether the network connection is working. A VM start does not establish that YouTube received video.
- YouTube has a preview, but the broadcast is not public. Check Live Control Room for the required preview or Go live action and review the stream’s auto-start settings. VM scheduling and YouTube broadcast controls are independent.
- The operation happened later than expected. Google documents that a scheduled operation can begin up to 15 minutes after its nominal time. Schedule earlier and include VM and encoder startup time.
- A start or stop schedule fails when events are close together. Keep the events at least 15 minutes apart, as Google warns that shorter separation can fail.
- The local clock change disrupted timing. Check whether the policy uses a DST-observing time zone and whether the intended time was skipped or repeated. Use UTC if fixed UTC timing suits the channel.
- The stream ended but no archive appeared. Do not assume automatic archiving applies to a 24/7 broadcast: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive rule is for streams under 12 hours. Check YouTube’s current live-stream and archive guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded video live around the clock, StreamNeo avoids maintaining a VM and encoder at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube uploaded-video streams, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
