Google+ was no longer required as the Play Games identity layer—but players still needed a Google account, and the change did not cover every Android game.
What changed in the 2016 update?
Before the update, Play Games sign-in was more closely tied to Google+ and could involve repeated account or authorization prompts. Google’s change gave players a separate gaming profile: a custom handle paired with an avatar. The launch report said the initial avatar selection included more than 40 images; that is a historical launch detail, not a count of the current catalog. Tech Times’ February 19, 2016 report described the rollout as taking place over the following weeks.

The point was both identity and convenience. Instead of presenting a real-world name in Play Games contexts, a player could appear under a gaming handle. Google also aimed to reduce repeated sign-ins and consent screens: after selecting an account, a player could be recognized automatically by other games that supported Play Games. Contemporaneous coverage of the sign-in changes explains that intended simplification.
What Gamer ID replaced—and what it did not
| Gamer ID changed or replaced | It did not replace |
|---|---|
| The requirement to use Google+ as the Play Games identity | The Google account used to access Play Games |
| Real-name presentation in supported gaming contexts, with a custom handle and avatar | A game publisher’s account or login |
| Repeated Play Games sign-in prompts in the intended supported-game flow | Every game’s own authentication, save system, or multiplayer requirements |
| A player-facing identity used by supported Play Games features | The game-specific progress and purchases associated with an account |
So “no longer have to sign in with Google+” did not mean “no Google sign-in.” The Google account remained the account behind Play Games; Gamer ID was the profile other players could see in relevant gaming features.

The current Google Play Games listing still advertises automatic sign-in and says users can choose a Google account and change it in settings. Exact labels and menu placement vary by app build and Android version, so there is no single verified path that applies to every device. Use the current profile and settings controls in the Play Games app to review the account and automatic sign-in options. Google Play Games listing
Which games use Gamer ID?
The change applies to games that use Google Play Games services. It does not automatically add Play Games sign-in to every Android title. A game may use its own publisher account, Facebook or email login, console account, or another system instead; it may also have separate requirements for multiplayer, purchases, or cross-platform play.

The 2016 report said developers generally did not need to make changes for the Gamer ID experience, but that rollout claim does not mean every game supported the service or behaved identically. If a game never offers Play Games sign-in, or its developer has changed or disabled integration, a Gamer ID will not supply a login for it.

A Gamer ID is an identity, not a save file. Play Games features can include achievements and cloud progress, but whether a particular title saves progress to the cloud—and how it links that progress to an account—depends on the game’s integration. Google’s current listing advertises cloud saving and continuing across devices, but does not promise identical save behavior for every title.

- If progress appears missing: first check that the game and Play Games are using the Google account that held the progress. A different account can show a different profile, achievements, or saved data.
- Before switching devices or resetting one: confirm inside the game that progress has synchronized. Do not assume a Gamer ID alone preserves a local save.
- If a game uses a publisher login: check that account too. Play Games sign-in may identify you to Google’s services without controlling the publisher’s save or purchase records.
- If automatic sign-in is off: review the Play Games settings for the selected account and sign-in preference, then reopen a supported game.
What the privacy change did—and did not—mean
The privacy benefit was separation of a gaming persona from a real-world name in Play Games contexts. It was not anonymity: the profile remained connected to a Google account, and a game publisher may collect or associate information under its own policies. Google’s current Play Store listing says data practices can vary by use, region, and age, and lists possible collection of location, personal information, and other data categories. A custom handle changes what name is shown; it does not, by itself, determine what data Google or a game developer processes.
What remains true in Play Games today
As displayed on August 18, 2026, Google’s Play Games listing continues to describe custom Gamer IDs, achievements, XP, cloud-save functionality, and automatic sign-in; it shows an update date of May 7, 2026. Those are current product claims, not a guarantee that each feature is available or works the same way in every region, account, device, app version, or game. The lasting change was a dedicated gaming identity and a simpler sign-in model for supported titles—not the removal of Google accounts or game-specific systems.
