Google announced a redesigned Google Play Games profile in September 2025, with rollout beginning the week of September 23 and more countries added October 1. The system gives players a cross-game identity with achievements, statistics, activity and followers. By August 2026, Google was still positioning Gamer Profiles as part of gaming across mobile and PC, but availability and individual profile fields remain dependent on account type, device and game support.
Google’s announcement is at Google’s September 2025 Play Games update; the current controls and visibility rules are documented in Google’s Play Games profile help page.
What changed in Google Play Games
Play Games already had gamer identities and achievements. The redesign makes that identity more visible and social inside Google Play, rather than leaving game progress mostly in the background.
Google’s documented profile can include:
- Gamer name and avatar
- Achievements
- Followers and accounts you follow
- Current and longest gaming streaks
- Experience level
- Games currently being played
- Relative playtime, shown as a percentage of overall playtime for the games being played
Google also describes statistics and achievements spanning supported games and devices, plus customizable Gen AI Avatars. Its March 2026 update continued to describe Gamer Profiles as syncing progress across mobile and PC. That does not mean every game exposes every field on every platform: developers must support the relevant Play Games services.

Why people call it “Steam-style”
The analogy fits because Play Games now combines a persistent player identity, public achievements and statistics, activity visibility and one-way following. Those are the parts of Steam’s profile experience that the redesign most clearly resembles.
It is not evidence of one-to-one Steam parity. Google’s documentation does not establish equivalent Play Games features for:
- A complete public library showcase
- User reviews or screenshots
- Trading, inventory or marketplace functions
- Steam Workshop-style user-generated content
- Steam account or achievement integration
“Steam-style” should therefore be read as Steam-inspired social profile presentation, not “a Steam profile on Android.”
Public and private profiles: what is visible
New profiles are private by default. Existing profiles were migrated from their former settings: “Everyone” became Public, while “Friends only” and “Only Me” became Private. Existing Play Games friends were converted into followers.

| Viewer or profile state | Information available |
|---|---|
| Public profile | Anyone can find the profile and view the avatar, gamer name, achievements, follower and following lists, gaming statistics, current and longest streaks, experience level, current games and relative playtime. |
| Private profile viewed by someone not approved | Profile image, gamer name or gamertag, follower and following counts, and an option to request to follow. |
| Private profile viewed by an approved follower | The fuller profile, including achievements, lists, statistics, current games and relative playtime. |
Relative playtime is a percentage of overall playtime for the games being played. Google’s help page does not describe this as a public lifetime-hours counter. A private profile is also not completely invisible because limited identity information remains visible.
How to change your profile visibility
From the Google Play app
- Open the Google Play app.
- Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then General.
- Tap Play Games profile.
- Open Privacy & Settings.
- Select Public profile or Private profile.
From Android Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap your account or Google.
- Tap All Services.
- Tap Play Games.
- Tap Privacy & Settings.
- Choose public or private visibility.
Labels can differ by Android version, manufacturer, account type and rollout state. If the first path is missing, look under Google account services or the Play Games profile screen. The official path is listed at support.google.com/googleplay/answer/16562063?hl=en.
Preview your public-facing profile
After changing settings—or if an older profile may have migrated to Public—check what another person can see:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open your gamer profile.
- Tap More.
- Select the profile-preview option.
This is more reliable than assuming that a setting change removed every visible field.
How following works
- A public profile can be followed immediately.
- A private profile sends a follow request for approval.
- You can unfollow accounts and remove people who follow you.
- Players can search by gamer name.
- Email-based discovery is off by default but can be enabled.
This replaces the older mutual-friend emphasis with a follower model: someone can follow your gaming identity without you following them back.

What data contributes to the profile
Google says Play Games processes information such as installed games, games played, how long games are played, performance information and device information. For participating games, developers may provide achievements, leaderboard rankings, events and saved progress.
Participating developers may receive or collect information about your profile, activity in their game and purchases made in that game, subject to their own terms and privacy policies. The feature is therefore an aggregation layer, not a guaranteed complete record of every game action.
Google’s data and deletion explanation is at support.google.com/googleplay/answer/3129346?hl=en.
The important distinction: Play Games profile versus Play History
These are separate systems. Deleting Google Account Play History does not necessarily remove information retained by an existing Play Games profile. Conversely, deleting a Play Games profile does not delete Play History data.
If your goal is to remove the gamer profile itself, use the separate Play Games profile deletion control. Do not assume that clearing Play History completes that task.

Supervised and child accounts are different
Supervised accounts do not receive the same social profile model as unrestricted accounts. Google says they:

Privacy choices and common problems
Choose Public when discovery matters most
Public visibility suits players who want to be found, share achievements and let others see current games, statistics and relative playtime. It also makes the profile a searchable gaming identity.
Choose Private when activity exposure is the concern
Private visibility lets you approve followers individually and limits strangers to basic identity information. It is the safer choice if you do not want current games, achievements or activity patterns broadly visible, or if a Google Account is used across personal and family contexts.
If the menu does not match
Android settings and Play Games interfaces vary by device and software version. Try both official paths, update Google Play components, and check the profile’s own Privacy & Settings screen.

If the profile unexpectedly became public
An older profile whose previous setting was “Everyone” may have migrated to Public. Check Privacy & Settings instead of relying on the default for newly created profiles.
If game progress appears split
Google warns that changing the default Play Games sign-in account can split progress between accounts for new games. Changing it for all games may remove access to existing progress and settings, so verify the account before switching.
If information is missing
Not every game supports every Play Games feature. Achievements, leaderboards, events, saved progress and sign-in behavior depend on developer participation, game support, account type and device.
Bottom line
Google Play Games has moved from a mostly behind-the-scenes achievement service toward a public gaming identity layer. It now looks Steam-like where it matters most—cross-game identity, achievements, statistics and followers—but Google has not documented the broader library, marketplace and community tools that make Steam a full platform. Check the preview, choose Public or Private deliberately, and remember that Play Games profile data is separate from Play History.
