Microsoft’s 2025 Windows Fix Addressed Easy Anti-Cheat Crashes—What Gamers Needed to Know

Microsoft’s 2025 Easy Anti-Cheat compatibility issue affected a limited subset of Windows 11 24H2 PCs and was resolved on July 24, 2025. Here’s how to check for related game crashes without disabling Windows security features.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 compatibility issue with some older Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) drivers was resolved on July 24, 2025. The problem was limited to certain Intel vPro PCs and could cause a freeze or a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen when an EAC-protected game launched. It was not a general failure affecting all Windows gaming PCs, and Microsoft’s record does not describe it as an ongoing August 2026 emergency. Microsoft’s release-health record says the safeguard hold was removed after the issue was addressed.

What happened with Windows 11 and Easy Anti-Cheat?

Windows 11 version 24H2 was incompatible with some older Easy Anti-Cheat drivers on a limited set of PCs. When a game launched EAC, an affected computer could stop responding or display a blue screen with the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT error. Contemporary reports also described crashes and unexpected reboots while launching games.

This was a compatibility and stability problem involving Easy Anti-Cheat, not evidence that every anti-cheat system or every Windows gaming PC was affected. Microsoft coordinated with Easy Anti-Cheat and used a compatibility hold to keep affected devices from being offered Windows 11 24H2 through Windows Update. Microsoft’s account of the issue says the safeguard hold was removed on July 24, 2025.

Which PCs and games were affected?

Microsoft described a specific combination of operating system, hardware platform, and older EAC software. The issue was generally associated with launching or playing a game that actually used the affected EAC component; an older EAC installation sitting unused was not expected to trigger it by itself.

  • Hardware: Intel Alder Lake-generation or newer processors on the vPro platform.
  • Anti-cheat: Older Easy Anti-Cheat drivers, particularly drivers released before April 2024.
  • Typical symptom: A freeze or blue screen showing MEMORY_MANAGEMENT when launching or playing an EAC-protected game.

June 2025 coverage named Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Elden Ring Nightreign as examples of games using EAC. That is not a definitive list of affected titles: publishers can change a game’s anti-cheat implementation, and the EAC component supplied with a game can vary. The useful question is whether the particular game launches Easy Anti-Cheat, not simply whether it is a multiplayer game. HotHardware’s June 12, 2025 report gives the contemporary examples.

What did Microsoft’s fix do?

Microsoft’s response combined a Windows-side compatibility safeguard with work to address the incompatible EAC components. At the time, reporting described a replacement or emergency Windows update and advised users to check Windows Update if it had not arrived automatically. Microsoft’s release-health record confirms that the compatibility hold was later removed, and notes that delivery of an EAC update depends on the game publisher.

There is no confirmed single KB number for this specific incident in Microsoft’s release-health entry. Do not assume a KB number mentioned in a forum discussion identifies the official fix. Nor should the compatibility remedy be confused with Microsoft’s regular monthly security updates or with a separate update a game publisher may provide.

What should you do if an EAC game is still crashing?

The documented Windows 11 24H2 issue is resolved, but checking for updates and repairing the game are sensible first steps if a crash resembles the old symptom. On a managed work or school PC, update timing may be controlled by an administrator.

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install offered updates, then restart if prompted.
  2. Open the game’s official launcher and install any available game update. Because the publisher controls EAC update delivery, Windows being current does not by itself prove the game’s anti-cheat component is current.
  3. If the launcher offers a repair or verify option, use it before deleting files manually. This can repair damaged game or anti-cheat files, though it may require downloading data again.
  4. Restart the PC, launch the game, and check whether the same failure occurs.
  5. If the game provides an official EAC repair tool or support instructions, follow those. Reinstall EAC only if the publisher recommends it; removing it can stop a game from launching online and may not solve the cause.

You do not need to uninstall EAC simply because it is present. Older EAC files that are not being used were not expected to cause this particular issue on their own.

What not to disable as a generic fix

Do not start by turning off Core isolation, Memory integrity, Secure Boot, TPM, antivirus protection, or other Windows security features. Disabling protections may change a symptom, but it is not Microsoft’s documented remedy for this compatibility issue and can weaken security. Likewise, rolling back Windows removes updates and should not be the default response to a problem Microsoft marked resolved.

How to tell whether a 2026 crash is something else

A crash in 2026 should be diagnosed on its own rather than automatically attributed to the 2025 EAC incident. Check the Windows version under Settings → System → About, or run winver. Note the exact blue-screen stop code and whether the PC crashes only when a particular EAC game starts.

  • If only one game fails, update or verify it through its official launcher and contact that game’s publisher if the failure continues.
  • If unrelated programs also crash, review Windows Reliability Monitor or crash-dump information rather than assuming EAC is responsible.
  • For broader instability, check for graphics or chipset driver, firmware, memory, overheating, power, overclocking, or disk problems. Get BIOS and driver updates from the PC or motherboard manufacturer.
  • If third-party security software is blocking a game or anti-cheat component, consult the software and game publishers’ guidance instead of disabling protection indiscriminately.
  • Contact Microsoft when failures occur across unrelated software after a Windows update; contact the game publisher when the failure is isolated to its game.

The specific Microsoft-documented issue is less likely when the PC is not running Windows 11 24H2, the game uses another anti-cheat product, or the crash occurs outside EAC games. A similar-looking blue screen can have other causes, so the stop code alone does not prove EAC is at fault.
