Google Search added a Minecraft-themed Easter egg for Minecraft’s 15th anniversary in May 2024. Searching for Minecraft could turn parts of the results page into a short interactive mining experience: click the grass-block icon, move over eligible page sections, and left-click to break them into blocks. It was not a full browser version of Minecraft, and Google has not promised that the feature remains permanently available.
What the Google Minecraft Easter egg was
Google and Mojang introduced the Search feature to celebrate 15 years since Cave Game appeared on May 17, 2009. The Easter egg was reported live on May 16, 2024, just before the anniversary. Mojang’s anniversary coverage described the Search experience as part of the celebration: Minecraft’s official anniversary article.

Rather than opening a playable Java or Bedrock world, the feature layered Minecraft-style effects onto the Google results page. You could mine sections of the page, reveal Minecraft scenery and blocks, and watch a block counter increase.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to activate it
- Open Google Search.
- Search for Minecraft and submit the query.
- Look for a small Minecraft grass-block icon on the results page.
- Click the icon to activate the experience.
The control is an icon, not a documented button labeled “Minecraft,” “Play,” “Start,” or “Mine.” Launch reports also documented related searches such as Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Steve, although availability was not limited by an officially documented single trigger phrase. See the launch coverage from GameSpot and Beebom.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
How mining worked
After activation, the pointer changed into a Minecraft-style mining cursor or crosshair. Steve’s hand appeared on the right side of the page when the pointer moved over a mineable region.
- Move the pointer over a page section.
- Wait for the pointer to change to the mining or crosshair state.
- Left-click while the crosshair is active.
- Watch the selected section break away as a block.
Eligible targets could include parts of the Knowledge Panel, individual search results, and articles shown in a Google News block. Empty page space was not documented as a mining target, so clicking randomly will not necessarily do anything.
Rank #2

Scrolling was part of the interaction. The Minecraft layer remained tied to the results page, and scrolling down exposed more of the interactive area and deeper blocks. A counter on the left recorded how many blocks had been broken.

Breaking sections revealed Minecraft scenery and additional materials. Reports described caves, ores, TNT, The Nether, and The End appearing as the interaction progressed.
Rank #3
The feature also included a lightweight pickaxe progression. Launch coverage reported that mining a log could grant a wooden pickaxe; mining stone could then lead to a stone pickaxe, followed by interactions involving iron ore, diamond ore, and ancient debris. The available documentation does not describe a conventional inventory screen, a named upgrade button, or a command for changing tools. This was a compact Search Easter egg, not a complete crafting or survival system.
How to exit
To leave the experience, click the X control at the bottom of the interactive page. The documented exit animation shows a Creeper appearing and exploding before the results page returns to its normal state. No slash command, console instruction, URL parameter, or special keyboard shortcut was required.

Why the icon may be missing
The Easter egg was associated with the 2024 anniversary celebration, and Google has not published a permanent-availability guarantee. The official Minecraft announcement refers to the feature as being available “during the celebration.” Later reports also indicate that Search experiments can vary by device, platform, account, session, browser, and region, or be removed after a limited run.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That means searching for Minecraft today may show ordinary results without the grass-block icon. Its absence does not necessarily mean the query was entered incorrectly. There is no verified Google support page promising universal continued access.

Quick troubleshooting
- No grass-block icon: Confirm that you are on a Google results page after searching for Minecraft. If the icon is still absent, the feature may not be available for your device, account, region, session, or current date.
- Clicking does nothing: Move over a result, Knowledge Panel section, or other potentially eligible area and wait for the pointer to become the mining crosshair before left-clicking.
- Expecting Minecraft gameplay: The Easter egg does not launch Minecraft Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, Dungeons, or a full browser game. It is an interactive animation and mining layer applied to Search results.
- Looking for a command: No command or URL parameter is required or documented. Activation uses the Search query, grass-block icon, pointer, left-click, scrolling, and the bottom-page X control.
What the feature was—and was not
The phrase “Google lets you play Minecraft” is a convenient shorthand, but it overstates what the Easter egg offered. The experience borrowed Minecraft’s visual language and mining loop while keeping the user inside Google Search. It was best understood as a short anniversary-themed interactive toy, not a substitute for Minecraft and not a full game client.
For the same reason, claims that only “Minecraft Bedrock Edition” activates it, or that one exact query is the sole valid trigger, do not match the launch reports. Minecraft was the primary search, while several related Minecraft queries were also reported to work.
