What was The Great Ghoul Duel?
Released on October 30, 2018, The Great Ghoul Duel was a browser-based Halloween game built around two teams of four. Players roamed spooky maps to gather wandering spirit flames, then carried them back to their team’s base. The team with the most flames when the two-minute round ended won.
The catch was that collected flames were not safe until banked. An opposing player could intercept a ghost carrying flames and take them, turning every trip home into a small risk-versus-reward decision. Google’s archive describes power-ups including speed boosts and night vision.
How a match worked

Open the Halloween 2018 Doodle archive and start the game. Contemporary coverage reported that it could be played in desktop and mobile browsers, though that is historical reporting, not a guarantee of compatibility today.

Why the simple rules made it engaging
A clear goal with a risky middle
Collect, carry, return: the objective takes seconds to understand. But a flame in transit is vulnerable, so players must decide whether to keep collecting or head back to bank what they have. The mechanic gives a straightforward scavenger hunt an immediate source of tension.
Teamwork without a complicated playbook
Four-player teams create room for natural roles: one player can keep gathering, another can escort a teammate, and others can pressure opponents or defend a route. The game does not require a long briefing for those choices to emerge.

Short rounds, visible stakes
Two minutes is enough time for the score to swing, but short enough to make a loss easy to shrug off and another round tempting. The contrasting team colors and bright flames keep the objective legible amid the Halloween-themed map. That combination—low onboarding, quick decisions, and stealable progress—helps explain why the Doodle could feel more compelling than its modest scope suggested.
Google’s first multiplayer interactive Doodle
Google called The Great Ghoul Duel its first-ever multiplayer interactive game Doodle. It offered both random matchmaking and private invitations, making the homepage game a real match among people rather than a single-player minigame dressed up as a contest. Google said the experience used Google Cloud systems and Open Match, an open-source matchmaking framework co-founded by Google Cloud and Unity. These were parts of the game’s original infrastructure, not features players needed to configure themselves.

Can you still play the 2018 game?
The official archive page remains available and presents a Play option. That confirms the archived Doodle can still be visited; it does not establish that random matchmaking, private invitations, or every part of the original online service still works. The available documentation describes how the game operated at launch, not uninterrupted service in 2026.

How the 2022 sequel differed
Google revived the idea for Halloween 2022 with another Great Ghoul Duel. It retained the two-team, four-player format and two-minute spirit-flame contest, but added characters, maps, powers, and unpredictable events. The Great Ghoul Duel was not a substitute for a full multiplayer game. Its achievement was making a familiar homepage feel briefly social and competitive, with simple rules and just enough risk in every flame-filled trip back to base.
