Gotham Knights character switching: Can you finish the game with one hero?

No. You do not have to play as all four characters in Gotham Knights. The complete game can be finished while using Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, or Robin as your primary hero, and no mission requires you to change characters. Switching is optional: return to the Belfry, the team’s clocktower headquarters, when you want to use someone else.

The reason you might still choose to rotate heroes is that some story scenes and a small number of side activities are specific to an individual hero. Staying with one character is enough for campaign completion, but it may leave some character-specific material unseen.

What the official answer means

WB Games Support answers the question directly: players can go through the entire game as any one of the four main characters, and there are no missions that force a character switch. The official Gotham Knights site gives the same guidance, while adding that some story content and a few side activities are hero-specific.

In practical terms, “play as one character” means you can select a favorite hero at the start, keep that hero active for ordinary missions, and complete the main story without being required to take control of the other three. The game does not divide the campaign into mandatory Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin chapters.

This is different from saying that every piece of content is identical for every hero. The campaign can be completed with one character, but the broader experience includes scenes or activities written for particular members of the team.

Who can carry the whole campaign?

Hero Can be your sole campaign character? Where to switch away from this hero What may be missed by never rotating
Batgirl Yes The Belfry Hero-specific story content and some side activities
Nightwing Yes The Belfry Hero-specific story content and some side activities
Red Hood Yes The Belfry Hero-specific story content and some side activities
Robin Yes The Belfry Hero-specific story content and some side activities

These are the four main playable heroes identified by the official game materials. None is designated as a required protagonist for the campaign. Your choice is therefore about preference and what content you want to see, not about meeting a story requirement.

How to change characters

Character changes are made at the Belfry. It is the team’s home base and the place the official support information identifies for switching heroes.

Gotham Knights (Xbox Series X)
  • Batman is dead. A new expansive, criminal underworld has swept the streets of Gotham City. It is now up to the Batman Family; Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin; to protect Gotham, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals.
  • From solving mysteries that connect the darkest chapters in the city’s history to defeating notorious villains in epic confrontations, you must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save the streets from descent into chaos.
  • Gotham Knights is an open-world, action RPG set in the most dynamic and interactive Gotham City yet. In either solo-play or with one other hero, patrol Gotham’s five distinct boroughs and drop in on criminal activity wherever you find it.
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
  1. Return to the Belfry. Leave the current patrol or mission flow and travel back to the clocktower headquarters.
  2. Use the hero-selection option available at the Belfry. Select the member of the team you want to control next: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, or Robin.
  3. Resume play with that hero. You can then continue the game with the newly selected character rather than treating the change as a separate campaign.

The important limitation is location: the official guidance points to the Belfry for switching, so do not expect to change heroes from any random point in Gotham. If you are deciding whether to rotate, plan the change around a return to the clocktower instead of assuming that a mission will prompt you automatically.

What happens if you stay with one hero?

You can complete the main game

Choosing one hero for the entire run is a supported way to play. No mission forces a switch, so a player who prefers one moveset, costume, voice performance, or role can maintain that choice through the campaign. The official statements do not attach a special completion condition requiring time with every member of the team.

You may not see every hero-specific scene

The official site qualifies its “any character” answer by noting that some story content is hero-specific. If you never select the other heroes, scenes written for them may not appear in your playthrough. That is a content-coverage issue, not a progression problem: the campaign remains finishable, but your run will not necessarily show every character-focused moment.

Some side activities are also specific to a hero

A few optional activities are tied to individual heroes. The available guidance does not establish a complete list, a fixed number beyond “a few,” or a requirement to replay the entire game to see them. Treat these activities as optional reasons to visit the Belfry and experiment, not as prerequisites for the main ending.

Should you rotate heroes or commit to one?

There is no universally correct choice. Use the following decision guide to match the game’s flexibility to the way you want to play.

Commit to one hero when continuity matters most

  • You want the campaign to feel like a single-character story.
  • You have found a hero whose controls and presentation suit you and do not want to relearn another character.
  • Your priority is reaching the main conclusion rather than collecting every hero-specific scene or side activity.
  • You are playing under a personal challenge or role-playing rule that favors one protector of Gotham.

This approach is fully compatible with campaign completion. Nothing in the official support answer says that a single-hero run is an incomplete or invalid way to finish.

Rotate heroes when you want broader story coverage

  • You want to see the individual character material identified by the official site.
  • You enjoy comparing how each member of the team feels in play.
  • You are willing to return to the Belfry periodically rather than staying with the hero selected for the current patrol.
  • You are treating optional side activities as part of your completion goal.

Rotation is therefore a viewing and variety decision. It is not a mandatory response to a mission design rule.

What “complete the game” does and does not guarantee

The official wording supports a clear claim about the main game: any one of the four heroes can take you through it from beginning to end. It does not promise that every hero-specific scene or side activity will be shown to every hero, nor does it publish a checklist proving that one character can trigger every optional moment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters if you use “100 percent” to mean more than finishing the campaign. A single-hero run satisfies the ordinary meaning of completing the story. A broader collection goal may require you to switch at the Belfry when content is associated with another hero. The available official information does not establish whether seeing all such material requires a full replay, a particular sequence of switches, or only targeted visits, so avoid assuming a replay structure that the game’s published FAQ does not state.

Common situations and the practical choice

“I have started as one hero. Did I make the wrong choice?”

No. The game is designed to let that hero carry the full campaign. You can continue without changing characters, or return to the Belfry later if you decide that you want to sample another member of the team.

“Will a mission suddenly force me to control someone else?”

According to WB Games Support, no mission forces players to switch characters. If a particular scene or side activity is hero-specific, that is a reason to choose the relevant hero voluntarily, not evidence that the main campaign has locked you out of progress.

“Do I need four separate versions of the game?”

No. The four heroes are playable characters within the same game. The official PlayStation US page describes the title as a PS5 game and confirms that the story can be completed as one character; it does not present four separate character editions that must be purchased.

“Can I change characters whenever I am in Gotham?”

The documented switching point is the Belfry. Return there when you want to select another hero. The official material does not describe an unrestricted field-switch command, so the safe expectation is to make changes at the clocktower rather than during any activity.

A simple plan for your first playthrough

  1. Choose the hero you most want to learn. Start with Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, or Robin based on your personal preference; none is required for the story.
  2. Play the campaign normally. Do not interrupt your run solely because you believe a mandatory character chapter is coming. The official FAQ says there are no forced switches.
  3. Mark optional content that interests you. If you want the hero-specific material mentioned by the official site, decide which other characters you would like to try rather than changing at random.
  4. Return to the Belfry before rotating. Use the clocktower as your established changeover point, then continue with the selected hero.
  5. Define your own completion standard. Finishing the main story with one hero is a complete campaign run. Seeing every character-focused scene or side activity is a broader optional objective, and the official sources do not specify that it requires a full replay.

Bottom line for different player goals

For a straightforward story completion, pick one hero and stay with them: the game supports that approach and does not force switches. For the widest range of character-focused material, rotate through the four heroes by returning to the Belfry, accepting that some story content and side activities are tied to particular characters. The choice changes how much of the optional and hero-specific material you see, not whether you are allowed to finish the game.
