The clearest documented early route is the Old Camp quest The Price of Magic. Find Torrez near the Old Camp market, bring him one Parchment and two Wolf’s Claws, then spend five learning points to train Rune Magic, according to PC Gamer’s June 5, 2026 walkthrough.
The remake launched on June 5, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Your faction changes your abilities and play style, so the Old Camp route should be treated as a practical starting path rather than a promise that every faction receives exactly the same magic progression. This guide separates confirmed quest instructions from later circle information maintained by a Steam community guide, which can change with patches.

What this mage route actually gives you
The Price of Magic is an early, documented way to unlock Rune Magic through Torrez in the Old Camp. Completing it does not mean every spell, circle or faction-specific option becomes available immediately. It gives you access to Rune Magic training for five learning points and starts the process of building a magic-focused character.
That distinction matters because the official game description presents faction choice as a major character decision. The official site says that joining one of three factions affects your abilities and play style and changes how the adventure unfolds. It does not publish a universal mage build, a guaranteed ending for a faction, or a complete list of which spells every character can learn.

The remake’s Steam listing also describes unrestricted exploration, faction-driven development and a modernized combat system. Those are publisher and store descriptions, not independent balance testing. Treat the route below as a reliable set of quest instructions, not as proof that a mage is automatically stronger or safer than a melee or ranged character.
Before entering the Old Camp: make the important decisions first
Choose the faction that matches the character you want to play
If your immediate goal is the Torrez quest, travel through the Old Camp and follow its quest line. Do not read that as a statement that the Old Camp is the only place where magic exists. The official information confirms that faction choice changes abilities and play style, while the detailed spell-access information comes from a community-maintained guide rather than an official rules document.
Pick a faction for the broader character you want, then use The Price of Magic if that route fits your plans. A player who wants a hybrid character can complete the quest and continue investing in other skills; a player who wants a dedicated caster should protect learning points and mana-related progression for later trainers.
Reserve the five learning points
PC Gamer’s walkthrough states that Torrez offers Rune Magic training for five learning points after you deliver the requested items. Keep at least five points available before handing over the quest items. The walkthrough does not establish every later training cost, so do not assume that the five-point payment is the only investment your final build will require.
Carry enough ore for the predictable purchases
The most direct shopping route costs 13 ore for the Parchment and seven ore for each of two Wolf’s Claws. Buying all three requested items therefore costs 27 ore. If you are short on ore, you can still obtain the claws through the alternative described below, but the Parchment remains a purchase in the documented route.
How to complete The Price of Magic step by step
1. Travel to Torrez in the southwest of the Old Camp
PC Gamer places Torrez near the market in the southwest part of the Old Camp. Its directions begin at the northern gate, continue past the water and Gravo’s shack, and then lead toward the market area. Use those landmarks rather than relying on a fixed map coordinate: quest states, camera positioning and localization can make a precise turn-by-turn description less useful.
When you reach the market area, speak with Torrez and confirm what he asks you to bring. You need one Parchment and two Wolf’s Claws. If the conversation does not appear to match the walkthrough, check that you are speaking to Torrez in the Old Camp and that you have advanced far enough in the relevant quest state; the source does not document a universal prerequisite list beyond the quest itself.
2. Buy the Parchment from Graham
Graham sells the required Parchment for 13 ore, according to PC Gamer. Obtain one copy, not a stack bought on the assumption that every parchment behaves like a reusable rune. The quest request is specifically for one Parchment.

Keep the item in your inventory until the hand-in. If you are collecting supplies for several quests at once, read the item names carefully so that you do not sell or store the quest Parchment before returning to Torrez.
3. Obtain two Wolf’s Claws
You have two documented approaches:
| Approach | What PC Gamer describes | Ore requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Buy the claws | Mordrag sells Wolf’s Claws. | Seven ore per claw; 14 ore for two. |
| Use the guards | Lure wolves back to the bridge guards, allow the guards to kill them, then loot the bodies. | No purchase price for the claws; the Parchment still costs 13 ore. |
The buying route is simple if you have 14 spare ore. The guard method can preserve ore, but PC Gamer warns that wolves are dangerous early in the game. It is a tactic described by the walkthrough, not a guarantee that every encounter, guard position or combat result will behave identically in every version.
4. Decide whether ore or combat risk is the bigger problem
There is no evidence for one universally best choice. The right option depends on your current equipment, health, available ore and willingness to spend time repositioning enemies.

- Lure wolves to the bridge guards when preserving ore matters more than avoiding a risky setup. Stay out of a fight you cannot survive, and do not assume the guards will solve every encounter without complications.
- Do not spend your final five learning points on unrelated training if Rune Magic is your immediate objective.
5. Return to Torrez and hand over the items
Bring Torrez one Parchment and two Wolf’s Claws. Complete the hand-in conversation, then select the Rune Magic training option when it appears. PC Gamer lists the training cost as five learning points.
The walkthrough does not establish the exact first rune choice in the lines documenting this quest. Do not plan around a specific spell such as Fire Bolt or a healing rune unless your current trainer dialogue or a current version-specific guide confirms it. The important confirmed result is access to Rune Magic training for five learning points.
6. Check your inventory and mana before casting
After training, distinguish the rune from any scrolls Torrez offers. PC Gamer describes the rune he gives as reusable while you have mana. Reusable does not mean free: each cast still draws on your mana pool. Torrez’s inventory can also include additional spells in the form of one-use scrolls.
Rune versus scroll: the rule that prevents wasted supplies
Reusable rune
A rune is the repeatable option described in the walkthrough. You keep it in your inventory and can cast it again when you have enough mana. The number of possible casts therefore depends on your available mana and recovery supplies, not on a fixed one-cast limit.

One-use scroll
A scroll is consumed when used. It can provide access to a spell without functioning like a permanent reusable rune. Save scrolls for situations where their effect is worth spending a limited item, especially while you are still learning how much mana your character can maintain.

Practical inventory habits
- Keep the reusable rune accessible in the slot or menu you use for combat.
- Watch your mana before pulling an enemy group; a rune that cannot be fueled is not a complete combat plan.
- Separate one-use scrolls from your reusable rune mentally and in your inventory layout so you do not consume the wrong resource.
- Do not describe a rune as unlimited. Its reuse is limited by mana and by the situations in which you can safely recover that resource.
How magic circles fit into later progression
A Steam community guide posted June 6, 2026 and updated July 2, 2026 indexes spells by circle, mana and effect. It reports six magic circles and different faction access. Those details are useful for planning, but they are community-maintained and patch-sensitive, not an official developer specification.
Because the guide can change and the available evidence does not establish every faction ceiling or every spell’s current cost, use it as a reference rather than a permanent rules contract. Before spending a large batch of learning points, inspect the current in-game trainer dialogue and check that the guide’s date and version still match your game.
What to verify before investing
- Which circle your chosen faction and current trainer can teach.
- Whether the spell you want is a rune or a one-use scroll.
- The current mana requirement shown for that spell.
- Whether a later circle requires a separate training step rather than only more learning points.
- Whether a patch has changed availability, costs or effects since the community guide was updated.
Why you should not import the original game’s assumptions
The remake modernizes combat and progression. Mechanics from the 2001 Gothic should not be treated as confirmed remake rules. If an old forum post lists a circle ceiling, rune effect or mana value, compare it with your current trainer and a current remake-focused guide before committing points.
Planning a mage after the first training session
Keep a reserve for the next confirmed trainer option
The documented five-point cost is the amount required for the initial Rune Magic training. Later costs and requirements are not established by the quest walkthrough. Hold back some learning points until you know which circle or support skill you want next instead of spending every point immediately after the hand-in.
Build around mana, not only spell ownership
Owning a rune does not solve resource management. A casting plan needs enough mana to use the spell and a way to survive when mana is low. Carrying a weapon or another fallback is sensible for any character whose damage depends on a limited resource, although the available sources do not provide a tested weapon-and-mage build or a numeric mana breakpoint.
Use scrolls as situational tools
One-use scrolls are valuable precisely because they do not require you to commit every future learning point to a permanent rune. Save them for an encounter where their effect changes the outcome, rather than treating every scroll as routine ammunition.
Recheck your plan after faction-specific information appears
The official site confirms that faction changes abilities and play style. The community spell guide adds that faction access differs across the reported circles. Together, those facts mean your later mage plan should be checked against your chosen faction, not copied unchanged from a character in another group.
Common problems and how to resolve them
“I cannot find Torrez.”
Start at the Old Camp’s north gate and follow the landmarks used by PC Gamer: pass the water, go by Gravo’s shack, and continue toward the market in the southwest. Torrez is described as being near that market. If the area looks different, use the landmark sequence rather than searching for an exact coordinate.
Rank #4
“I have one claw, but the quest still will not complete.”
The request is for two Wolf’s Claws, not one. Buy a second from Mordrag or obtain another through the bridge-guard method described by the walkthrough, then return with the full set and one Parchment.
“I do not have enough ore.”
Buying the Parchment and both claws costs 27 ore at the prices listed by PC Gamer. The documented alternative is to buy the 13-ore Parchment and lure wolves to the bridge guards so you can loot the claws instead of buying them. The source does not promise that this method is safe, so use it only when you can manage the risk.
“The wolves kill me before the guards do.”
The walkthrough itself warns that wolves are dangerous early on. Leave the area, improve your equipment or use the purchase route if you cannot reliably survive the lure. Do not treat the guard tactic as mandatory; it is an option for reducing the claw purchase cost.

Confirm that you delivered exactly one Parchment and two Wolf’s Claws and that you have five learning points available. Recheck the conversation after completing the hand-in. If the option still does not appear, verify your faction and current quest state against the remake’s current dialogue; the walkthrough does not document every possible prerequisite or localization variation.
“My rune will not cast.”
Check your mana first. The rune is reusable, but PC Gamer’s description explicitly ties its use to having mana. A reusable item can still fail to cast when the resource required to fuel it is empty.
“A guide lists a different circle or spell cost.”
Check the publication date and whether the guide covers the remake rather than the original game. The detailed six-circle information cited for this guide comes from a Steam community guide updated July 2, 2026 and may change with patches. Trust your current in-game trainer dialogue for the final decision.
What the official descriptions do—and do not—promise
THQ Nordic’s official material presents the remake as a dynamic, living world. In an April 15, 2025 development feature, Lead Game Designer Javier Untoria said, “We are creating a living world with a lot of character.” Studio Director Reinhard Pollice described the remake’s design challenge this way: “Our job was to find out what elements should stay exactly as they are and what elements should be expanded.” These statements explain the project’s broad design direction; they do not establish mage balance, spell damage or a guaranteed route through the circles.

A compact checklist for your first Rune Magic session
- Choose your faction with the official warning in mind: it affects abilities and play style.
- Travel to the Old Camp and locate Torrez near the southwest market using the north-gate, water and Gravo’s-shack landmarks.
- Reserve five learning points for the Rune Magic training option.
- Obtain one Parchment from Graham for 13 ore.
- Obtain two Wolf’s Claws from Mordrag for seven ore each, or use the bridge-guard method described by PC Gamer.
- Return to Torrez and complete The Price of Magic.
- Pay the five-learning-point training cost when the Rune Magic option appears.
- Remember that the rune is reusable but mana-limited, while a scroll is consumed after one use.
- Before planning later circles, compare your current trainer dialogue with the Steam community guide updated July 2, 2026.
- Do not transfer circle ceilings, spell costs or effects from the original 2001 game without remake-specific confirmation.
Bottom line: the fastest documented start
The Old Camp’s The Price of Magic quest is the most concrete early mage route documented here: find Torrez, deliver one Parchment and two Wolf’s Claws, and spend five learning points on Rune Magic. Buying the three items costs 27 ore at the prices reported by PC Gamer; luring wolves to the bridge guards is an alternative for obtaining the claws, but it carries early-game combat risk. After training, manage mana carefully because a rune can be reused but is not free to cast, and treat scrolls as one-use supplies. For everything beyond that first lesson—circles, faction ceilings, spell lists and later costs—verify the current trainer and the dated community guide rather than assuming the original game or an older post still applies.
