What changed from the original Win 4?
The original Win 4 used AMD’s Ryzen 7 6800U platform. The 2023 refresh moved to Ryzen 7040U-series processors, most notably the Ryzen 7 7840U. That change brought a newer Zen 4 CPU design and Radeon 780M integrated graphics.

The other major change was the addition of OCuLink. GPD positioned the port as the connection for its GPD G1 graphics dock, giving the Win 4 a path to substantially more graphics performance when used at a desk. This is the refresh’s clearest hardware differentiator—not simply a cosmetic update or a routine processor swap.
There were also later Win 4 revisions and later GPD product pages. A current listing may combine information from several generations, so buyers should verify that a specification applies specifically to the 2023 Ryzen 7040U model before relying on it.
Ryzen 7 7840U and Radeon 780M: what the specifications mean
AMD lists the Ryzen 7 7840U as an 8-core, 16-thread Zen 4 processor with a 3.3 GHz base clock and boost speeds of up to 5.1 GHz. Its default TDP is 28 W, and the configurable range is 15–30 W. The chip includes Radeon 780M integrated graphics with 12 graphics cores. AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U specifications provide the authoritative processor figures.
Those numbers describe the processor, not a guaranteed frame rate. Actual game performance on the Win 4 depends on the selected power limit, cooling, memory configuration, graphics drivers, game engine, resolution, and quality settings. The same handheld can behave very differently at a low portable power setting and at a higher plugged-in setting.
The Radeon 780M makes the 7840U configuration a capable integrated-graphics platform for a broad range of PC games, but the Win 4 remains a small battery-powered computer. It is not accurate to turn the CPU specification into a promise of desktop-level performance, and no single benchmark number should be treated as representative of every game or power profile.
Why the OCuLink port matters
OCuLink is the feature that can change the Win 4 from a self-contained handheld into a docked gaming system. GPD describes the 2023 model’s implementation as a direct PCIe Gen4 x4 connection with 63 Gbps of effective bandwidth, and specifically identifies compatibility with the GPD G1 docking station. A contemporaneous description identifies the connector as an OCuLink SFF-8612 interface. PCI-SIG lists OCuLink Specification Revision 1.1 as an approved OCuLink specification.
In practical terms, OCuLink provides a direct PCIe path between the handheld and a compatible external graphics dock. That is different from using a general-purpose USB-C port. The external dock supplies the graphics hardware and typically connects to a monitor and other peripherals, while the Win 4 supplies the computer platform.

What do you need to use the OCuLink port?
- The GPD Win 4 (2023) with its OCuLink port.
- A compatible external graphics dock, such as the GPD G1 graphics dock.
- An OCuLink cable with the correct connector arrangement and length. A suitable OCuLink cable may be described as an SFF-8611-to-SFF-8612 cable, but the listing must be checked against the particular dock and handheld.
- Compatible graphics drivers and the correct setup procedure for the dock and operating system.
- A display and, depending on the arrangement, a way to choose whether games render on the external monitor or the handheld’s own screen.
A cable alone does not turn the Win 4 into an externally accelerated gaming PC. Nor does the presence of OCuLink guarantee desktop-class results. Dock hardware, the installed GPU, drivers, display routing, game configuration, and the selected power profile all affect the outcome.
Connector terminology is especially important. “OCuLink cable” is a useful search phrase, but not every listing is guaranteed to fit every device. Check the host and dock connector types, mechanical orientation, cable length, and any model-specific compatibility information before ordering.
The sliding physical QWERTY keyboard
The keyboard is the Win 4’s most distinctive everyday feature. Slide the display upward and a concealed physical keyboard appears underneath. GPD describes it as a full QWERTY layout with adjustable backlighting.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Full QWERTY” describes the layout rather than the physical size. The keys are much smaller and more tightly packed than those on a normal laptop keyboard. People accustomed to a full-size keyboard should expect an adjustment period, and the keyboard is better understood as a compact input solution than as a replacement for a desktop typing setup.
Because later GPD pages may describe key mechanisms differently from 2023-era coverage, the safest description of this model is its concealed sliding design, physical QWERTY keys, and backlight. Do not silently transfer mechanism-level details from a later Win 4 revision.
Storage and SSD upgrades
The Win 4 platform is described as supporting a PCIe Gen4 2280 SSD. That makes internal storage a practical upgrade or replacement topic, especially for owners whose game libraries exceed the original drive’s capacity.
However, replacing an SSD and reinstalling firmware are separate operations. An SSD swap may require cloning or reinstalling Windows, while GPD’s dedicated Win 4 (2023) firmware and support page warns that reinstalling firmware removes all data on drive C.
Before opening the device or reinstalling firmware
- Back up documents, game saves, configuration files, and any recovery data.
- Confirm that the support package is for the Win 4 (2023), rather than the original 6800U model or a later revision.
- Record your Windows activation and application details where appropriate.
- Check the replacement drive’s 2280 format, physical clearance, controller behavior, and thermal requirements.
- Read the current GPD manual and firmware instructions before beginning. Do not assume that a later model’s procedure applies to the 2023 unit.
A high-capacity PCIe Gen4 2280 NVMe SSD is a sensible category to research for expansion, but a specific drive should not be presented as guaranteed to work without checking the exact Win 4 hardware, clearance, thermals, and firmware behavior. A microSDXC card can also be useful for a game library or media files where supported, but it should not be treated as equivalent to the internal NVMe drive for every workload.
GPD Win 4 (2023) versus Steam Deck
The comparison is less about a universal winner and more about priorities.
| Priority | Why the Win 4 (2023) may be the better fit | What to weigh carefully |
|---|---|---|
| Windows software and launchers | It is a Windows PC with a physical keyboard for navigation and text entry. | Windows handheld setup and maintenance can require more troubleshooting than a console-focused interface. |
| External graphics | Its OCuLink port provides a direct PCIe connection for a compatible eGPU dock. | The dock, cable, GPU, drivers, and display add cost and complexity. |
| Portability | The compact design combines a gamepad-style handheld with a concealed keyboard. | The small keyboard is not comparable to a full-size laptop keyboard, and ergonomics are highly personal. |
| Storage | The 2280 internal SSD format makes replacement or expansion an important option. | Opening the device and reinstalling firmware require careful backups and model-specific instructions. |
| Value | It offers unusual features unavailable on many mainstream handhelds. | Used-market price, condition, battery health, accessories, support, and stock vary by region and date. |
The Win 4 is most compelling for someone who specifically wants Windows, a compact physical keyboard, and the option of an OCuLink desktop setup. If those features are not useful, a simpler handheld may offer a more straightforward ownership experience. Battery life, weight, display behavior, noise, thermals, and game performance should be compared only using tests performed under the same workload and settings; the available dossier does not establish canonical independent benchmark results for the 2023 model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the GPD Win 4 (2023) still worth buying?
It can be, but the answer depends on whether its unusual hardware solves a real problem for you.
It remains interesting if you want:
- A small Windows PC that can be used as a handheld and a docked computer.
