What gpurecorder.dll is
gpurecorder.dll is the library used by the historical GPU Recorder plugin. The plugin was designed for older PlayStation emulators and could record emulator gameplay to .rec files. A separate GPU Player component was used to play those recordings.

The plugin is historical and may not work with modern emulator releases. The exact application producing the error cannot be determined from the filename alone, but an old PlayStation emulator is the most likely source.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because gpurecorder.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “gpurecorder.dll was not found.”
- “Failed to load gpurecorder.dll.”
- “Error loading gpurecorder.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
A missing-file message usually means the emulator is configured to use GPU Recorder, but the DLL was deleted, moved, quarantined, or never extracted into the correct plugin directory.
“Failed to load” can mean the DLL is present but incompatible. It can also mean that one of the DLL’s dependencies is missing. In Windows error messages, “the specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency rather than the named file itself.
Fix 1: Restore the complete emulator plugin package
This is the most likely solution.
Do not search for a standalone copy of gpurecorder.dll first. Restore the complete GPU Recorder package, because the plugin may include supporting files, configuration data, or a matching player component.
If you have the original emulator or plugin archive
- Close the emulator.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the emulator’s installation folder.
- Find the folder named
plugins,Plugin, or a similarly named graphics-plugin directory. - Check whether
gpurecorder.dllis present. - If it is missing, locate the original trusted emulator or plugin archive.
- Extract the complete GPU Recorder files into that
pluginsfolder. - Do not extract them into
System32,SysWOW64, the Windows folder, or a random folder on the desktop. - Start the emulator.
- Open its video configuration. In older ePSXe versions, this was typically under Config > Video.
- Select DarkMan’s GPU Recorder 2.0, if it appears.
- Save the configuration and start a game or recording test.
The exact menu names vary between emulator versions. Look for Video, GPU, Graphics, Plugins, or Configure.
If the emulator has repair or verification
Some launchers provide a built-in repair function.
- Open the emulator launcher.
- Open Settings, Manage, Properties, or Installed files.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or Verify integrity.
- Run the verification.
- Allow the launcher to restore missing files.
- Reopen the emulator and select its video plugin again.
If verification restores the plugin, the error should disappear when the emulator starts. If the emulator still reports the missing DLL, check that the restored file is in the plugin directory used by that particular emulator installation. Multiple copies of an old emulator can have different plugins folders.
If you only need ordinary video output
You do not need GPU Recorder merely to run a game.
- Start the emulator.
- Open its video or graphics-plugin configuration.
- Choose another installed compatible GPU plugin.
- Save the setting.
- Restart the emulator.
If the emulator starts normally afterward, the problem was a stale GPU Recorder selection or an incompatible recording plugin. You can leave gpurecorder.dll out of the installation if recording is not required.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 2: Reinstall the emulator that requested the file
If the original plugin archive is unavailable, reinstalling the emulator or its compatible plugin bundle is safer than downloading a loose DLL.
- Back up your memory cards, save files, BIOS files, and emulator settings.
- Close the emulator.
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected emulator.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the emulator again from a source you trust.
- Restore only your personal saves and configuration files.
- Confirm that the emulator’s
pluginsfolder contains the graphics plugin it expects. - Open the video configuration and select an installed compatible plugin.
If the error began after uninstalling ePSXe or moving its folder, the emulator may no longer exist even though a shortcut or configuration entry remains. Remove the obsolete shortcut or reinstall the application that created the configuration.

A reinstall is successful when the emulator opens without requesting gpurecorder.dll and can initialize a compatible video plugin. If only GPU Recorder fails but another GPU plugin works, the remaining issue is plugin compatibility rather than a Windows DLL problem.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine an old emulator plugin. Old software can trigger security warnings because it is unsigned, uncommon, or uses outdated code. Do not restore the file automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an item that appears to match the emulator or GPU Recorder.
- Check the detected path. It should point to the emulator’s plugin directory, not a Windows system directory.
- Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from your trusted original emulator or plugin package.
- Run a scan after restoring it.
- Reopen the emulator and select the plugin again.
If the detection identifies malware or the file came from an unknown DLL website, do not restore it. Remove the unsafe copy and reinstall the complete application from a trustworthy source.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the plugin, the safest choice may be to use another compatible graphics plugin or a maintained emulator. Do not weaken antivirus protection simply to load an obsolete recording plugin.
Fix 4: Check whether the DLL is present but a dependency is missing
A file can exist in the correct folder and still fail to load. Older emulator plugins may depend on libraries supplied with the emulator, legacy graphics components, or runtime files.
First, reinstall the complete emulator/plugin package. This restores the intended group of files and is safer than guessing which runtime to install.
Only install legacy DirectX components or a Visual C++ Redistributable when the emulator’s documentation or a dependency diagnostic specifically identifies that requirement. These Microsoft packages are not a default fix for gpurecorder.dll, and neither package is known to be the file’s source.
To distinguish a missing plugin from a missing dependency:
- If File Explorer cannot find
gpurecorder.dllin the emulator’s plugin folder, the plugin itself is missing or misplaced. - If the DLL is present but the emulator reports a load failure, a dependency, architecture mismatch, or plugin incompatibility is more likely.
- If another compatible GPU plugin loads successfully, the emulator itself is probably functional.
- If every graphics plugin fails, investigate the emulator installation, permissions, graphics configuration, and broader system problems.
Do not copy random dependency DLLs beside the emulator. That can create version conflicts and make diagnosis harder.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Old PSEmu Pro plugins were generally designed for older emulator software, but the architecture of a particular gpurecorder.dll cannot be confirmed from its filename. Public catalogue entries disagree about whether surviving copies are 32-bit or 64-bit.
Use a plugin built for the architecture of the emulator, not simply the architecture of Windows.
For example, a 32-bit emulator normally needs a 32-bit GPU plugin even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit emulator generally cannot load a 32-bit graphics plugin.
Check the emulator’s documentation or installation package for its architecture. Do not rely on:
- The name of the DLL
- A download-page label
- The architecture of your graphics card
- Whether Windows itself is 64-bit
If the plugin is present but fails immediately, replace it with the matching plugin package for that emulator generation. Do not mix files from unrelated emulator releases.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall the graphics driver only for broader graphics problems
A graphics-driver problem is not the normal cause of a missing gpurecorder.dll. The file is an emulator plugin, not a driver component.
Consider a driver check only when the emulator also shows problems such as a blank display, widespread rendering failures, crashes in other graphics applications, or a Windows display-adapter warning.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
To reinstall the driver:
- Return to Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Use the removal option only if it is clearly presented and you understand the consequences.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer or your computer manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when manually identifying the correct package is difficult; its free scan shows what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the emulator remains the definitive fix for an application-owned plugin.
Do not expect a graphics-driver reinstall to recreate gpurecorder.dll. If the emulator alone reports the error, return to the plugin directory and emulator configuration.

- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
If SFC or DISM reports repairs, test the emulator again. If the same gpurecorder.dll message remains, restore the emulator plugin instead. These commands do not prove that the plugin was repaired.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the emulator is still the correct fix for this application file.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 gpurecorder.dll
as a routine repair.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration procedures such as DllRegisterServer. A PSEmu graphics plugin is normally loaded through the emulator’s plugin interface, not registered as a Windows COM component.
A typical result of using regsvr32 on this file would be an error saying that the entry point was not found. That does not repair the emulator and does not make the plugin available globally.
The correct process is:
- Put the complete compatible plugin package in the emulator’s plugin directory.
- Open the emulator’s video configuration.
- Select the plugin there.
- Test the emulator.
What not to do
Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows and installed system components. Placing an emulator plugin there does not register it with the emulator and can create DLL search-order conflicts.
The plugin belongs beside the emulator’s other plugins.
Do not download a random standalone DLL
Unverified DLL download pages can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong emulator generation
- The wrong architecture
- A corrupted or incomplete plugin
- A file with unknown provenance
A loose DLL may remove one message while leaving the missing package or dependency unresolved. Restore the complete plugin bundle from a trustworthy original distribution source instead. There is no reliably identified current publisher download for this historical plugin, so treat claims about version, size, hashes, and architecture as unverified unless you can validate the exact package yourself.
Do not use registry cleaners or DLL fixer programs
This plugin is not repaired by cleaning registry entries. Automated DLL tools may place an unrelated copy in the wrong folder or alter system files unnecessarily.

Do not disable antivirus permanently
If the plugin is quarantined, verify its origin and scan it. A security warning is not evidence that the file is safe to restore.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the emulator still crashes
If the emulator starts but crashes when GPU Recorder is selected, the DLL is not necessarily missing. The plugin may be incompatible with the emulator version, graphics mode, operating system, or another plugin.
Try this sequence:
- Close the emulator.
- Open its video configuration.
- Select another compatible GPU plugin.
- Disable recording features.
- Restart the emulator.
- Test a game without changing other settings.
- If the alternate plugin works, leave GPU Recorder disabled.
- If every plugin crashes, reinstall the emulator and review its graphics settings.
If you need recording specifically, use an emulator and recording method that are supported together. The historical GPU Recorder plugin may not be suitable for modern emulator builds.
FAQ
Is gpurecorder.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application plugin associated with DarkMan’s GPU Recorder and older PlayStation emulators.
Where should gpurecorder.dll be located?
Normally in the emulator’s plugins folder, beside the emulator’s other graphics plugins. It should not be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do I need gpurecorder.dll to run ePSXe?
Not necessarily. You need a compatible GPU plugin, but you only need GPU Recorder if you want that particular recording functionality. Select another installed GPU plugin if recording is unnecessary.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Normally no. The emulator loads the plugin through its own interface, so registering the DLL with Windows is not the appropriate repair.
Should I install DirectX or Visual C++?
Only if a dependency diagnostic or the emulator’s documentation identifies one of those packages as missing. They are not the default solution for gpurecorder.dll.
Why does the error remain after I restore the file?
The emulator may be looking in a different plugins folder, the plugin may have a missing dependency, or its architecture may not match the emulator. Recheck the active installation path and test another compatible GPU plugin.
