Which Windows edition are you looking at?
Steam lists the original Grand Theft Auto III as a Rockstar Games title released on May 21, 2002. The later Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition is a separate PC product released on Steam on January 19, 2023. It is not merely a graphics setting or downloadable upgrade for the 2002 executable.

Original GTA III PC requirements
The original Windows edition was built for early-2000s computers. Steam lists these minimum specifications:
- Windows 2000 or Windows XP
- Pentium III 450 MHz processor
- 96 MB RAM
- 16 MB Direct3D-capable graphics
- DirectX 8.1
- 500 MB of free storage
Those figures describe the 2002 release, not the Definitive Edition. They also do not establish official support for current Windows versions. If you are buying a boxed or legacy digital copy for Windows 10 or 11, confirm the exact release, installer, activation method and compatibility information supplied with that copy before assuming it will install or run unchanged.

Definitive Edition PC requirements and online rules
Rockstar Games lists the Definitive Edition minimum as Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 760 or Radeon R9 280-class graphics card and 45 GB of storage. These requirements are dramatically higher than those of the 2002 game because this is a modernized PC build.
Rockstar Games Customer Support states: “Installation and online play requires log-in to Rockstar Games account (13+) network; internet connection required for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification.” The support page was updated April 21, 2024. Plan for an internet connection during installation and for later entitlement checks even if you mainly intend to play offline.

What the Definitive Edition changes
Steam describes the modern release as adding updated lighting, environmental upgrades, high-resolution textures and increased draw distance. It also uses controls modeled on Grand Theft Auto V. These changes affect visual presentation, world visibility and input feel; they do not turn the original 2002 PC installation into the Definitive Edition.
Can you run GTA III on Windows 10?
For the Definitive Edition
Yes, provided the PC meets Rockstar’s listed Windows 10 64-bit minimums and you can complete Rockstar account activation and periodic entitlement verification. A machine below 8 GB RAM, the GTX 760/Radeon R9 280 graphics class or 45 GB free space does not meet the published minimum specification.

For the original release
The published requirements target Windows 2000/XP, so the specification sheet alone does not promise Windows 10 compatibility. Treat a legacy disc or old digital key as a separate compatibility project: identify the edition, check the seller’s return policy and look for installation guidance specific to that release rather than applying Definitive Edition requirements.
Where to buy and how to avoid the wrong edition
Search for the exact product name Grand Theft Auto III PC game when considering a physical or boxed legacy copy, and read the listing’s edition, publisher, operating-system notes and included activation method. A listing that says “The Definitive Edition” is the modern product with Rockstar-account and internet-verification requirements; a listing that simply says “Grand Theft Auto III” may refer to the 2002 release or a legacy package.

- Match the advertised requirements to your PC: 96 MB/500 MB figures belong to the original release; 8 GB/45 GB figures belong to the Definitive Edition.
- For the Definitive Edition, ensure you can use a Rockstar Games account and an internet connection for activation and entitlement checks.
- For a used physical copy, verify that the disc, product key and any required launcher access are actually included.
Which edition should you choose?
Choose the original Windows release when
- You specifically want the 2002 PC version and its legacy presentation.
- Your computer cannot meet the Definitive Edition’s 8 GB RAM, GTX 760/Radeon R9 280-class graphics and 45 GB storage minimums.
- You have verified that the particular physical or digital copy can be installed and activated on your Windows version.
Choose the Definitive Edition when
- You want updated lighting, textures, environmental detail, draw distance and GTA V-style controls.
- Your PC meets Rockstar’s current minimum specification for the modern build.
- You accept Rockstar account login, internet activation and periodic entitlement verification.
Content rating
The Definitive Edition carries an ESRB Mature rating for violence, gore, sexual content, strong lyrics and drug references. Check the rating shown on the specific original release as well, since packaging and regional storefront presentation can differ between editions.
