How Story Mode works
Three protagonists, one connected campaign
The campaign follows Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa, and Trevor Philips as their separate stories collide. Each character has a distinct identity and ability set, and the game uses character switching to make missions feel larger than a single criminal’s point of view. A robbery, government operation, or other major scheme can involve different characters performing different parts of the same plan.

This structure is more than a storytelling device. It changes how missions are staged: the player may move between characters during a set piece, approach the same region from different perspectives, and experience the contrast between the protagonists’ goals and personalities. The result is a campaign that alternates between directed missions and open-ended time in Los Santos and Blaine County.
Mission objectives and free exploration
Story Mode has a clear main path, but it does not require you to remain on that path every minute. Between missions, the open world supports vehicle theft and driving, exploration, shooting, flying, water-based traversal, recreational activities, property and vehicle interaction, and side missions. Those categories describe the game’s main types of play; they are not intended as an exhaustive list of every optional activity.
A useful way to approach the campaign is to treat the main missions as the backbone and the open world as the space between them. Follow the campaign when you want new story developments and major heist scenarios. Take a detour when you want to drive, explore, try an optional activity, or simply experiment with the world’s vehicles and locations.

Heists are central to Story Mode’s premise. The three protagonists become involved in increasingly ambitious criminal schemes across Los Santos and Blaine County, alongside organized crime, government operations, and satire aimed at the entertainment industry and Southern California-style excess. The campaign therefore combines action-adventure gameplay with planning and execution sequences rather than treating every mission as a straightforward firefight.
The open-world freedom does not remove the campaign’s structure. Mandatory missions advance the protagonists’ stories, while optional activities provide additional ways to spend time in the setting. That balance is the core of Story Mode: a directed narrative when you want one and a large sandbox when you do not.
How GTA Online works
The central progression loop
GTA Online is a separate online progression layer set in the same fictional region. Its basic loop is:
- Take part in activities such as missions, Heists, races, Adversary Modes, or Freemode events.
- Earn GTA$ through the activities available to your character and group.
- Acquire assets, including businesses, properties, vehicles, and weapons.
- Use those assets to access or improve further activities, expanding the range of things you can do in the online world.
This progression is deliberately less linear than Story Mode. You are not following Franklin, Michael, or Trevor through a fixed campaign. You are building an online identity and deciding whether your next goal is a cooperative Heist, a new business, a modified vehicle, a social venue, or another activity.

Playing alone or with other people
Rockstar and PlayStation describe GTA Online as playable solo or with friends, while the PlayStation product information supports sessions of up to 30 online players. Solo play lets you progress at your own pace and focus on the activities that suit you. Group play is the better fit for cooperative Heists and any content that benefits from coordinated roles.

The presence of other players also changes the feel of Freemode. Some sessions may be used for relaxed driving, property management, vehicle modification, or social activities; others may involve player-versus-player encounters and spontaneous events. If you prefer a directed objective, choose a mission, race, Heist, or other defined activity rather than treating every moment in Freemode as a required part of progression.
Major GTA Online gameplay formats

Career Builder on current-generation versions
The current-generation console versions and GTAV Enhanced on PC include Career Builder as an onboarding system. It presents four starting directions: Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner, and Biker. The system provides starting resources intended to establish an initial business, vehicle, and weapon loadout.

It is also version-specific: do not assume that every older console release includes the same onboarding feature.
Community-created missions and replayability
GTA Online’s replayability is not limited to Rockstar-authored missions. Rockstar’s Mission Creator for current-generation consoles and GTAV Enhanced PC allows players to create and share missions across Los Santos and Blaine County. Rockstar has also highlighted Community Mission Series content on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced.
There is an important distinction between the two sources of content:
- Official missions are authored and released by Rockstar as part of the game’s content.
- Community-created missions are made by players through Rockstar’s creator tools and may differ in quality, style, curation, and ongoing availability.
That distinction matters when choosing what to play. Official missions usually provide the most consistent presentation and structure. Community missions can offer unusual objectives, experimental layouts, and a stream of fresh ideas, but their availability and quality can vary. GTA Online is a live-service game rather than a launch-only set of activities. Rockstar continues to publish updates, community content, and event-based activities. Those examples should not be treated as a permanent weekly schedule. Bonuses, rewards, featured activities, and event availability can change. Current-generation and PC Enhanced gameplay differences
GTAV Enhanced on PC
GTAV Enhanced launched on PC on March 4, 2025. Steam describes it as an upgraded version of both Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online, with improved visuals, faster loading, 3D audio, and exclusive GTA Online content. The Steam product information also lists single-player, online player-versus-player, online cooperative play, achievements, in-app purchases, and a required Rockstar Games account.
Rockstar’s current GTAV materials identify additional upgraded features including enhanced graphics modes, improved textures, higher frame rates, ray-traced shadows and reflections, faster loading, and 3D audio. On PC, the upgrade also identifies ambient occlusion, global illumination, AMD FSR, and NVIDIA DLSS support.
These features describe the capabilities of the Enhanced release, not a guaranteed frame rate on every computer. Actual results depend on the PC’s hardware, settings, display resolution, drivers, and the scene being rendered. A graphics feature being supported does not mean every system can use it at the same quality or performance level.
PS5 graphics modes
On PlayStation 5, Rockstar documents three graphics modes. They represent different trade-offs between image quality, ray tracing, and frame-rate targets:

The current-generation versions also bring faster loading, improved lighting and texture quality, and 3D audio. On PS5, the game supports DualSense features including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These additions affect presentation and feel; they do not change the fundamental distinction between Story Mode and GTA Online.
Which version should you buy?
If you are buying rather than already owning it, start with the Grand Theft Auto V game listing for your platform and then confirm the edition before paying. The important choice is not simply the title on the box or store page. Check whether the product is for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC Enhanced, whether Story Mode is included, and whether the listing is for the full GTAV product or GTA Online alone.

On PlayStation, the product listing covers PS4 and PS5 versions, with Story Mode and GTA Online included in the GTAV product. GTA Online can also be sold separately on PS5, with Story Mode available as an in-game upgrade. Prices, bundles, and upgrade offers can vary by region and promotion, so confirm the live store page rather than relying on an old deal description.
For a publisher-direct purchase or official apparel and collectibles, check Rockstar’s official store. Platform stores such as PlayStation Store and Steam are useful when you need the edition tied directly to your console or PC account. The correct choice is the one that matches both your hardware and the mode you actually intend to play.
Online access, accounts, and optional purchases
Online access has platform requirements. The PlayStation listing states that online play requires PlayStation Plus and supports up to 30 online players. Steam lists a required Rockstar Games account for the PC product. Check the store page for your region and platform for any additional account, subscription, or network requirements that may change over time.
Both PlayStation and Steam identify optional in-game or in-app purchases. That label should not be confused with a requirement to buy anything to play Story Mode. In GTA Online, purchases are optional, and spending does not guarantee faster progression, skill, or competitive success. Treat any additional purchase as a convenience or customization decision, not as a substitute for learning the game’s activities and progression systems.

Rockstar identifies a one-time migration process for moving Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters or progression to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Migration eligibility and platform-specific transfer rules can change, so check Rockstar Support before starting the process.
Do not assume that buying a new copy automatically transfers every save, character, item, or form of progress. Confirm the source platform, destination platform, account relationship, and current eligibility rules first. If the transfer matters to you, make migration a purchase-checklist item rather than something to investigate after launching the new version.
Story Mode or GTA Online: a practical decision guide
Choose Story Mode when…
- You want a directed campaign with a beginning, developing character arcs, and major heist scenarios.
- You prefer single-player play rather than interacting with other online players.
- You want to explore at your own pace without building an online business or managing online progression.
- You enjoy switching between three protagonists with different identities and abilities.
Choose GTA Online when…
