Yes—Grand Theft Auto V remains a compelling choice if you want a substantial open-world crime story, but which edition makes sense depends on your platform and whether you want the campaign, GTA Online, or both. The original game launched on September 17, 2013; later releases span several hardware generations and advertise different platform features. This guide separates the single-player story from the online mode and explains what to check before buying.
What game are you buying?
Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V, often called GTA 5) is not one interchangeable release. GameSpot lists its first release date as September 17, 2013 and indexes versions for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Check the exact platform and edition shown in the store listing rather than assuming every version has the same features. GameSpot’s GTA V listing keeps the original game distinct from later platform releases.
The campaign and GTA Online are connected parts of the broader product, but they answer different questions for a buyer. The campaign is a story-driven, single-player experience; GTA Online is the separate online mode, with its own access conditions and continuing-service character. GameSpot maintains separate review entries for the game and GTA Online, a useful distinction when evaluating them. GameSpot’s listings do not establish current online population, balance, economy, or update quality, so those should not be inferred from the campaign’s reputation.
How does the Story Mode hold up?
For players drawn to a long-form open-world crime story, the campaign remains the central reason to consider GTA V. Its appeal rests on the combination of a large setting, three protagonists, missions, and room to explore beyond the main objectives. The PC-filtered Metacritic listing surfaces favorable review themes around the story, characters, missions, and open world, though those themes are not a substitute for a full platform-by-platform review comparison. Metacritic’s PC listing currently shows 66 critic reviews; that count applies to its PC page, not every edition.

That structure gives the campaign a different rhythm from a tightly linear action game: story missions provide direction, while the open world allows detours between them. The trade-off is that players seeking a purely mission-to-mission experience may spend time in activities and exploration they do not value. Choose it for the mix of narrative and open-world freedom, not on the assumption that every moment is a main-story mission.
Is GTA Online included, and is it worth playing?
GTA Online should be assessed separately from Story Mode. It is the game’s online component, not simply a measure of how good the campaign is. The supplied official PC information discusses GTA Online character and progression migration, while Rockstar’s PS5 product page promotes exclusive content for GTA Online players. Neither establishes the current state of its economy, player population, balance, or update quality, so buyers who care most about those live-service details should check current platform and storefront information before deciding.

Do not assume that buying a listing with “GTA V” in its name automatically gives you the exact combination of campaign and online access you expect. Store packages can change, and access conditions vary by platform and storefront. Read the selected listing’s included-content and online-access details before checkout.
What changes in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions?
Rockstar and Take-Two announced that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions became available on March 15, 2022. Rockstar’s PS5 page advertises upgraded visuals, faster loading, 3D audio, and exclusive content for GTA Online players. These are publisher-described features, not independent measurements of resolution, frame rate, or image quality. Rockstar’s GTA V page is the place to confirm the current PS5 product details; Take-Two’s release announcement gives the console release date.

If you already own an older console version, confirm whether the newer-generation listing is a separate purchase and exactly what it includes. The available product information supports a feature distinction, but it does not establish current bundle terms or a universal upgrade entitlement.
Which PC version should you choose?
Rockstar distinguishes PC Legacy and Enhanced versions. Its PC guidance says eligible players can transfer Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression from Legacy to Enhanced through a one-time migration. Review the eligibility and migration instructions for your account before switching; do not assume every save or account state transfers automatically. Rockstar also says installation and online play require account access and an internet connection for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. Exact requirements can depend on platform and storefront, so check the requirements attached to the PC edition you intend to buy. The available sources do not provide independent PC performance benchmarks for comparing Legacy and Enhanced.

The available aggregate evidence supports broad critical acclaim, but it does not provide a reliable edition-by-edition score comparison. Metacritic’s current PC listing reports 66 critic reviews. OpenCritic ranks the game in its 100th percentile among titles it has scored. Those are different services and different measures: a PC-page review count is not directly comparable to a percentile ranking, and neither figure should be treated as a complete score matrix for every platform.
