You may see one of these messages when starting a game, launcher, installer, or modding utility:
- “The program can’t start because granny2.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because granny2.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find [path]granny2.dll.”
- “DLL may be missing, corrupt, or wrong version.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The program is not designed to run on Windows.”
The exact wording matters. A message naming granny2.dll points toward the game or application that owns the file. A message naming MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or another Microsoft runtime file points toward a dependency instead.

The 60-second answer
granny2.dll is a third-party Granny runtime component from RAD Game Tools, now part of Epic Games. It is used by games and other interactive 3D applications for animation, meshes, models, assets, and related runtime work.
It is not a Windows file. It should not normally be downloaded into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The safest first repair is:
- Identify the game or application showing the error.
- Close its launcher.
- Use the launcher’s Repair, Verify files, Verify integrity, or Scan and repair command.
- If no repair command exists, reinstall that application from its legitimate installer or store.
- Check Windows Security if the file disappeared again.
The correct granny2.dll is the copy shipped with the affected application. A file with the right name can still be the wrong Granny version, wrong architecture, corrupted, or missing a dependency.
What Granny and granny2.dll are
Granny is middleware integrated into software that handles 3D models, animation, meshes, and game assets. Developers bundle the runtime with their own applications rather than installing Granny as part of Windows.
RAD Game Tools originally developed Granny. Epic Games acquired RAD Game Tools in 2021, while RAD’s products continue to be supported and licensed. The name alone does not identify which game installed a particular granny2.dll. Many different applications may use Granny, and the file cannot reliably be traced to one product without examining the error path and installed programs.

The file is normally application-local. It may sit beside the game executable, inside a bin, system, or engine folder, or in another subfolder chosen by the application developer. Windows commonly searches the application directory before system directories. That is why copying a replacement to System32 is usually the wrong repair.
Some file catalogs list Granny versions including 2.9.12.0, 2.8.12.0, 2.7.0.9, 2.6.0.13, 2.5.0.11, 2.1.0.5, and 2.1.0.3. These entries should not be treated as a universal version requirement. The correct version, size, bitness, and location depend on the application that shipped it.
First determine which program owns the error
Before changing Windows, identify the program requesting the file.
If the error appears when launching a game
Note the game title, launcher, edition, and installation location. A game may be installed through Steam, Epic Games, another store, a standalone installer, or an unofficial archive. The launcher normally provides the best repair method.
If the message displays a full path, read it carefully. A path under a game directory identifies the likely owner. A path under a mod manager or development tool may indicate that the tool, rather than the game, needs repair.
If the error appears during installation
The installer may be incomplete, damaged, blocked by antivirus, or obtained from an unreliable source. Do not download granny2.dll separately. Obtain a complete installer from the application publisher or the legitimate store and run the installation again.
If the error appears after installing a mod
Remove the mod temporarily and restore the original game files through the launcher. Mods can replace files, alter load paths, or include an incompatible Granny build. Test the unmodified game before adding modifications again.
If you do not know which program requested it
Open Settings with Windows key + I, select Apps, then Installed apps. Review recently installed or recently updated games and utilities. Also check desktop shortcuts:

- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field and Start in folder.
- Use that information to locate the owning application.
Do not assume that a generic granny2.dll search result identifies the correct program. The filename is shared by products that may require different builds.

Fix 1: Repair or verify the affected application
This is the most likely fix because granny2.dll belongs to the application, not Windows.

Close the game and its launcher first. Then use the appropriate repair command.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to complete.
- Start the game without any mods enabled.
The wording may differ between Steam versions, but the purpose is the same: compare the installed files with the store copy and replace missing or damaged files.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Select the three dots beside its name.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish, then launch the game.
Other launchers
Look for Repair, Verify, Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similar command in the game’s management menu. Do not manually replace the file before completing this step.
Some launchers need administrator rights to repair protected folders:
- Close the launcher.
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Start the repair or verification again.
If the repair completes and the game starts, the original problem was probably a missing, damaged, or altered application file. If the launcher reports that files were repaired but the same error returns, continue with the quarantine check below.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus protection may remove or block an application-local DLL. This is especially worth checking if the error began after an update, reinstall, mod installation, or first launch.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events involving the game, launcher, installer, or
granny2.dll. - Open an event to read its details.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. Confirm that:
- the game came from a legitimate publisher or store;
- the quarantine event corresponds to the affected application;
- the file belongs in that application’s folder;
- the installer and surrounding files are trustworthy.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can expose the device. If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source instead.
After restoring a verified legitimate file, run the launcher’s repair or verification process again. If Windows Security removes the file immediately after reinstalling, do not repeatedly disable protection. Record the detection name and contact the application vendor or security provider.
Fix 3: Reinstall the owning game or application
Use this when repair cannot restore the file, the installation is incomplete, or the program came from a damaged archive.
- Back up saved games and configuration files if the application stores them in its installation folder.
- Remove unofficial mods and third-party patches.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps or through its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or reinstall the application from its legitimate store or publisher.
- Install it to a normal writable location.
- Start it once before reinstalling mods or custom tools.
A clean reinstall is the definitive way to obtain the matching granny2.dll. It also restores related files that a standalone DLL download would not provide.
If you are using a repack, cracked installer, incomplete archive, or installer obtained from an unknown source, replace it with a legitimate complete installation. An unofficial package may omit the file, alter it, or include an incompatible build.
If the file disappears again immediately after a clean reinstall, return to Protection history and check whether antivirus, Controlled Folder Access, a cleanup utility, or a mod manager removed it.

Fix 4: Check whether the error names a dependency instead
A common mistake is to see granny2.dll somewhere in the error context and install the wrong runtime. Read the full message carefully.

The architecture must match the application:
- A 32-bit game normally needs the x86 redistributable, even on 64-bit Windows.
- A 64-bit game normally needs the x64 redistributable.
- Some applications require older Visual C++ generations, which may remain installed side by side with newer packages.
Download the redistributable only from Microsoft’s official documentation and download pages. Installing Visual C++ may repair a dependency used by Granny, but it does not normally recreate granny2.dll.
To repair an installed current Visual C++ package:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Select the package matching the application.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the application is 32-bit, do not install only the x64 package because Windows itself is 64-bit.
Fix 5: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit games, but the game still needs compatible 32-bit application files and dependencies. Installing a 64-bit granny2.dll beside a 32-bit executable will not solve the problem.

If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” possible causes include:
- a corrupted binary;
- a wrong-architecture DLL;
- an incomplete extraction;
- a mismatched Granny release;
- a missing or incompatible dependency.
That wording does not identify one universal cause. Restore the application’s original files first.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features only for an old game requirement
Windows Features are not a normal solution for a missing granny2.dll. Do not enable random components hoping that Windows will supply the file.

If documentation specifically requires a Windows optional feature:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Enable only the component the application requires.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not confuse DirectPlay or another legacy feature with the Granny runtime. Windows Features will not install the application’s matching granny2.dll.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall graphics and chipset drivers only when symptoms support it
A driver update is not the first response to a missing application DLL. Consider it when the game also crashes after starting, displays rendering errors, or began failing after a graphics-driver change.

To inspect drivers:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Driver tab and device status.
- Use Update driver only with a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if available. Do not remove unrelated drivers merely because granny2.dll is missing.
Driver hunting is manual when several devices are involved, and repeating updates without recording what changed makes diagnosis harder. Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party game DLL.
Use them when multiple unrelated applications fail, Windows features are damaged, updates do not work, or other protected system files are also reporting errors.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Keep the elevated Command Prompt open.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the game again. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not prove the game’s copy of granny2.dll is correct. Return to application repair or reinstall.
Running SFC and DISM repeatedly without checking the application, quarantine history, and dependency name usually adds time without addressing the cause. Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A game runtime DLL normally does not need COM registration.
Running:
regsvr32 granny2.dll
may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the file needs registration, and repeating the command will not repair a missing, mismatched, or corrupted game installation.

Do not copy a random DLL into System32
Copying granny2.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 creates several problems:
- the application may continue loading the wrong local file;
- a DLL from another game may export different functions;
- the architecture may not match the executable;
- Windows system folders become harder to audit;
- malware or tampered code may gain a wider loading path.
Random DLL download sites also provide no reliable guarantee that the file matches the application’s Granny release. A replacement can have the right filename but the wrong exports, version, architecture, or contents. It may appear to fix one message while causing a different crash later.
The safe sources are the affected application’s official installer, its legitimate store launcher, and the application publisher’s support channel.

When a file is present but still will not load
A present file can fail because one of its dependencies is missing or because the application expects a different Granny build.
Check the full error for a named dependency. If it names a Microsoft runtime, repair the matching Visual C++ package. If it reports an import failure or function mismatch, restore the exact application files. A Microsoft Q&A case involving 1701 A.D. Gold Edition demonstrated how a wrong granny2.dll version can fail to provide the function the application expects.
Do not replace the file with one copied from another game. Verification or a clean reinstall is safer.

If the error persists after reinstalling
Collect the information an application vendor will need:
- application and edition;
- launcher or store used;
- full error text;
- executable path;
- path of the
granny2.dllbeing loaded or requested; - whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- whether the file is present;
- recent antivirus events;
- recent update, mod, cleanup, or driver changes.
Then test with all mods removed and with the application installed from a legitimate source. If several unrelated programs fail, investigate Windows corruption, malware, disk errors, or System Restore. If only one game fails, its developer or publisher owns the Granny integration and is the appropriate support contact.
