Gray Zone Warfare still has extraction-shooter mechanics, but the label no longer captures its whole design. MADFINGER Games’ official page continues to call it a “tactical sandbox extraction FPS.” Yet its persistent open world, extended field activity and outposts that can support players without a return to base push it toward a persistent tactical MMOFPS, too. The fairest verdict is that Gray Zone Warfare is stretching the extraction-shooter category—not that extraction has vanished.
Is Gray Zone Warfare still an extraction shooter?
Yes, in part. The official Gray Zone Warfare page still uses extraction-shooter language and describes high-stakes PvEvP and PvE operations in a persistent open world. It also highlights missions, loot, rival factions and AI enemies. Those elements give the label a factual basis.
But the same page describes a persistent world rather than presenting the game solely as a sequence of separate raids. There is no formal genre standard in the cited sources that settles whether a persistent-world game with extraction mechanics must be called an extraction shooter. The title’s claim is therefore an argument about emphasis, not a definitive reclassification.
What makes it different from a raid-focused extraction shooter?
A persistent world changes the shape of a session
In a May 2025 interview reported by Insider Gaming, MADFINGER PR Director Rick Lagnese described the game as a persistent tactical MMOFPS. He said players are not “jumping in and out of isolated raids” but are “living in this world.” His framing emphasizes staying in the field and moving between outposts and points of interest, rather than treating each outing as a discrete raid.
#1 Best Overall
That is the developer’s reported positioning, not proof that the game has removed extraction-style risk. It also does not cancel out the official site’s use of the extraction label.
Outposts can reduce the need to return to base
MADFINGER’s April 24, 2025 World & Weather devlog said captured Combat Outposts can provide respawns, vendors and resupply without a trip back to base. This gives players reasons to remain active in the world and makes the outposts more than destinations on a map.
The same devlog said Joint Operations’ PvE outposts are shared, rather than faction-rivalry objectives. That offers a concrete example of how the PvE mode changes the outpost experience; it should not be assumed that every mode or current game build works identically to the 2025 description.
What extraction-shooter elements remain?
Persistence does not erase the stakes. The official game description still presents loot, rival factions and high-stakes PvEvP operations alongside PvE play. It describes realistic ballistics, weapon customization and an injury system in which injuries can affect perception and performance and require diagnosis and treatment.

Those systems help explain why the game can feel dangerous even when the design is not limited to isolated raids. “Extraction shooter” remains a reasonable shorthand for part of the experience; it is less complete as a description of the whole structure.
Can you play Gray Zone Warfare PvE?
The official page describes both PvEvP and PvE operations, so players have a PvE option as well as PvEvP. The 2025 devlog specifically describes shared Combat Outposts in Joint Operations. The choice matters: the presence of PvE does not mean every player encounters the same faction-versus-faction risks.

How the current version fits the debate
The Steam listing identifies Gray Zone Warfare as an Early Access game. Its Update 0.4, “Spearhead,” description presents a broad overhaul, listing 100+ new tasks and contracts plus 50+ updated tasks, for more than 250 total; 25+ new locations; 8 new weapons; 380+ weapon parts; and 150+ gear pieces. It also lists changes to AI, loot, the map, economy, ballistics, movement, health and onboarding. Those are storefront figures and claims for that update, and the page may change as the game develops.
The Steam page also describes full-release features prospectively and says development may continue for several years. Planned features should not be treated as available now. Update 0.4 demonstrates substantial ongoing development, but a list of update changes cannot decide a genre classification by itself.

What the player-count increase does—and does not—show
On April 6, 2026, PC Gamer reported MADFINGER’s figures for the period following Update 0.4: a 1,076% increase in monthly peak players, 126,600 peak daily active players and 30,954 peak concurrent users. These are developer-attributed figures reported by the outlet, not independently audited counts. They indicate a reported surge in activity after the update, not that players have accepted one particular genre label.
