Gray Zone most likely refers to The Grey Zone, Tim Blake Nelson’s 2002 historical drama about Jewish prisoners forced into the Auschwitz Sonderkommando. Nelson wrote and directed the film, a 108-minute dramatic treatment based on his play and Miklós Nyiszli’s eyewitness account—not a documentary.
What is The Grey Zone about?
The film follows a unit of Auschwitz’s Sonderkommando: Jewish prisoners coerced into assisting with the camp’s killing process. Its story centers on the extreme moral dilemma imposed on them and an armed revolt at Auschwitz. Apple TV’s US description calls it “the only armed revolt that would ever take place at Auschwitz.” The subject is presented as a grim historical drama, not as documentary footage or a neutral historical survey.

Who made the film, and what is it based on?
Tim Blake Nelson wrote and directed The Grey Zone. The American Film Institute (AFI) identifies two literary sources: Nelson’s play of the same name and Miklós Nyiszli’s book Auschwitz: A Doctor’s Eyewitness Account, published by Greenwich in 1960. Nyiszli’s book is a useful companion for readers who want to explore one of the sources behind the film.
