Great Runes are powerful shards of the Elden Ring that you obtain from major demigod bosses. For most of them, the complete process is: defeat the boss, restore the rune at its associated Divine Tower, equip it at a Site of Grace, and consume a Rune Arc. Only one Great Rune can be active at a time, and its blessing ends when you die or switch to another rune.

There are two important exceptions. The Great Rune of the Unborn is permanently available for rebirth at Rennala and does not use a Divine Tower or Rune Arc. Miquella’s Great Rune, added in Shadow of the Erdtree, is a special-purpose item for the Promised Consort Radahn encounter rather than a normal combat buff.

What Great Runes are

Great Runes are shards of the Elden Ring claimed by Marika’s demigod offspring after the Ring was shattered. Their power helped trigger the Shattering, the war that turned the demigods against one another. The demigods who possess these shards are commonly called Shardbearers.

In gameplay, Great Runes are optional bonuses attached to major milestones. Defeating a Shardbearer gives you the rune, but usually does not give you its benefit immediately. You must restore the rune, equip it, and activate it with a Rune Arc.

The runes also reveal something about their owners. Morgott’s Great Rune reflects his place in the Golden Lineage and his rule over Leyndell. Mohg’s is described as being soaked in accursed blood. Malenia’s is half-rotted, matching both her affliction and her extraordinary resistance. They are therefore more than interchangeable stat items: each one is also a symbol of the demigod who carried it.

The four-step process: obtain, restore, equip, activate

  1. Obtain the rune. Defeat the associated demigod or boss and collect the Great Rune from the rewards.
  2. Restore the rune. Travel to the Divine Tower named in its description and interact with the rune at the tower’s summit. This is a separate action from merely picking it up.
  3. Equip the rune. At any Site of Grace, select the Great Runes option and choose a restored rune. You can equip only one at a time.
  4. Activate the blessing. With a conventional Great Rune equipped, use a Rune Arc from your inventory or quick-use slot. The rune’s effect then applies to your character.

A common source of confusion is that these are separate states. You can possess a Great Rune without restoring it, restore it without equipping it, or equip it without using a Rune Arc. In each of those situations, it is normal for your character to receive no visible benefit.

What happens when you die?

Rune Arc activation is temporary. The blessing is lost when your character dies or when you change to a different Great Rune. You must use another Rune Arc to reactivate the newly equipped rune. Do not treat Rune Arcs as permanent upgrades to the rune itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because of this, a Rune Arc is most valuable when you are ready to commit to an exploration route, boss attempt, or difficult area. Activating a rune immediately before an uncertain fight can be wasteful if the attempt ends in death.

Every obtainable Great Rune

Great Rune Obtained from Restoration or use location Effect and best use
Godrick’s Great Rune Godrick the Grafted Divine Tower of Limgrave Raises every attribute by 5 when activated. It is the most flexible early- and mid-game option because it improves Vigor, Mind, Endurance, strength, dexterity, intelligence, faith, and arcane at the same time.
Great Rune of the Unborn Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon No Divine Tower; active by default Enables rebirth at Rennala. Each accepted stat redistribution consumes one Larval Tear. It is a respec utility, not a conventional combat buff.
Radahn’s Great Rune Starscourge Radahn Divine Tower of Caelid Raises maximum HP, FP, and Stamina by 15% after Rune Arc activation. It is a broad resource and survivability choice for developed characters with meaningful Vigor, Mind, or Endurance investment.
Rykard’s Great Rune Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy Divine Tower of West Altus, reached through the Sealed Tunnel Restores 80 HP plus 7% of maximum Vigor whenever an enemy is killed while the rune is active. It excels during exploration and enemy-clear routes, where frequent kills provide repeated healing.
Morgott’s Great Rune Morgott, the Omen King Divine Tower of East Altus Raises maximum HP by 25%. It is the clearest straightforward defensive choice, particularly for characters with substantial Vigor.
Mohg’s Great Rune Mohg, Lord of Blood Divine Tower of East Altus Gives a blood blessing to eligible summoned spirits and supports invasion-related Phantom Great Rune mechanics. Its value depends heavily on spirit summons or invasion play rather than ordinary solo boss fights.
Malenia’s Great Rune Malenia, Blade of Miquella Isolated Divine Tower, accessed from the Divine Bridge Reduces the healing provided by Flask of Crimson Tears but lets attacks made shortly after taking damage recover part of the HP lost. It rewards aggressive counterattacks instead of cautious defense.
Miquella’s Great Rune Scadutree Avatar No Divine Tower; special use in the final DLC encounter A broken rune that retains the power to resist charms. Use it during the Promised Consort Radahn encounter to remove Miquella’s charm. It is not a permanent, all-purpose build buff.

Divine Tower locations at a glance

  • Limgrave: The Divine Tower of Limgrave is reached from the Stormveil side of Limgrave Tower Bridge.
  • Caelid: The Divine Tower of Caelid uses a difficult exterior and interior platforming route before the summit.
  • West Altus: The Divine Tower of West Altus is reached through the Sealed Tunnel, including its hidden-wall route.
  • East Altus: The same Divine Tower restores both Morgott’s and Mohg’s Great Runes.
  • Isolated Divine Tower: Malenia’s rune is restored at the tower accessed through the Divine Bridge.

When you are unsure which tower to visit, inspect the Great Rune’s description. The named tower is the reliable destination; simply finding a Divine Tower is not enough if it is the wrong one.

Which Great Rune should you use?

There is no universally best Great Rune. The strongest choice changes with your level, attribute distribution, current objective, and whether you use spirit summons or invasions. The following recommendations compare the documented effects rather than claiming a universal ranking.

Best flexible choice: Godrick’s Great Rune

Godrick’s rune is usually the easiest recommendation for a character still developing a build. The flat +5 to every attribute can provide damage, survivability, FP, stamina, equip load, and enough extra requirements to use equipment that would otherwise be just out of reach.

Its value is highest when several of those attributes matter to you. It is less impressive if your important stats are already near their relevant soft caps, if you only care about one specialized attribute, or if your build does not benefit from the extra requirements. Even then, it remains an unusually broad bonus.

Best general-purpose percentage bonus: Radahn’s Great Rune

Radahn’s rune increases maximum HP, FP, and Stamina by 15%, making it useful across many established builds. It becomes especially attractive when your character has invested heavily in two or three of those resources. A melee character can use the extra stamina and HP, while a spellcaster benefits from larger FP and HP pools.

Compared with Godrick’s rune, Radahn’s bonus is percentage-based rather than a collection of flat attribute increases. Which produces the better result depends on your current stats, equipment requirements, and whether you need more raw attributes or larger resource pools.

Best for maximum survivability: Morgott’s Great Rune

Morgott’s +25% maximum HP is the most direct defensive effect among the ordinary Great Runes. It is a strong choice for high-Vigor characters and for difficult fights where surviving one additional hit matters more than gaining FP, stamina, or offensive flexibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also easier to use than Malenia’s rune: Morgott’s benefit does not require a particular attack pattern or recovery window. Equip it, activate it, and your larger HP pool applies immediately.

Best for exploration: Rykard’s Great Rune

Rykard’s rune is built around killing enemies. Every qualifying kill restores health, so it can reduce the number of Crimson Flask charges you spend while clearing catacombs, legacy dungeons, open-world routes, or groups of ordinary enemies.

It is much less useful in a boss arena where the only target is a single boss. It also does not replace the need to avoid damage: the healing arrives after kills, not as a passive regeneration effect during a duel.

Best for aggressive counterattacks: Malenia’s Great Rune

Malenia’s rune changes the usual healing trade-off. Flask of Crimson Tears healing is reduced, but attacking soon after taking damage lets you recover part of the lost HP. It suits players who naturally answer a hit by staying close and pressuring the enemy.

This is not a universal lifesteal effect. If you tend to retreat, heal, and wait for a safe opening, the reduced Flask healing can outweigh the benefit. It is also less forgiving when you are learning a boss and cannot reliably attack during the recovery window.

Best with spirit summons or invasions: Mohg’s Great Rune

Mohg’s rune is specialized. It gives a blood blessing to eligible summoned spirits, allowing the summon-related effects to interact with nearby kills and blood loss. Blessed allies can heal you when they kill nearby enemies and gain increased damage when blood loss is triggered nearby.

That makes Mohg’s rune a poor default for a solo character who does not summon. Its additional invasion-related Phantom Great Rune function is aimed at multiplayer invasion play, so its usefulness depends on how you approach the game rather than on raw character statistics.

Best for respecs: the Great Rune of the Unborn

The Great Rune of the Unborn does not compete with Godrick’s, Radahn’s, or Morgott’s combat bonuses. Its purpose is to unlock rebirth at Rennala. After choosing to redistribute your attributes, you spend a Larval Tear, making it valuable whenever you want to rebuild a character around a new weapon, spell school, or playstyle.

Best for the DLC’s final boss mechanic: Miquella’s Great Rune

Miquella’s Great Rune has one narrow but important purpose. After obtaining it from the Scadutree Avatar in Shadow of the Erdtree, use it during the Promised Consort Radahn encounter to dispel Miquella’s charm.

It does not replace Godrick’s, Radahn’s, Morgott’s, or Malenia’s rune for general exploration. It also does not need to be restored at a Divine Tower or activated with a Rune Arc.

Progression: do you need every Great Rune?

No. You can collect, restore, and use the runes that suit your character without obtaining every named Great Rune. The game directs the Tarnished to seek additional Great Runes after claiming the first, and the normal progression structure uses major demigod victories to open the way toward Leyndell. However, routes can vary, and some Shardbearers and major bosses are optional.

Restoring a rune is also not the same as advancing the story. A rune can sit unused in your inventory, and its Divine Tower can remain unexplored, without preventing you from continuing through other areas. Restoration is an upgrade choice, not a requirement to make the boss victory count.

If you want a physical route reference for tower approaches, boss information, item details, and progression paths, an Elden Ring official strategy guide can be useful. It is optional—the game does not require one—and you should check the current edition and availability before buying.

Great Runes that are not ordinary player equipment

Ranni’s Great Rune

Ranni’s Great Rune exists in the game’s lore, but it is not obtainable as player equipment. Do not expect to find it at the end of Ranni’s questline or add it to the Site of Grace Great Runes menu.

The Rune of Death

The Rune of Death should be treated separately from the standard Great Runes. It is a fundamental component of the Elden Ring’s order of death, not a normal player-equipable Great Rune that grants a combat blessing through a Rune Arc.

Common activation mistakes and fixes

“I defeated the boss, but the rune does nothing.”

Defeating the boss only puts the Great Rune in your inventory. Check its description, travel to the named Divine Tower, and interact with it at the summit. Then visit a Site of Grace, equip it, and use a Rune Arc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I restored it, but my stats have not changed.”

Restoration alone is not activation. Confirm that the rune is selected in the Site of Grace’s Great Runes menu, then consume a Rune Arc. If you died after activating it, the blessing has ended and another Rune Arc is required.

“I used a Rune Arc, but I cannot see a bonus.”

Make sure a conventional Great Rune was equipped before using the Arc. A Rune Arc does not permanently upgrade a rune, and the Arc’s effect is not a substitute for restoration. Also check that you have not switched to another rune since activating it.

“Why can’t I restore the Great Rune of the Unborn?”

Nothing is wrong. The Unborn rune is an exception: it is active by default, has no Divine Tower restoration step, and enables rebirth at Rennala. It is not a normal combat rune.

“Why does Miquella’s Great Rune not improve my character?”

That is also intended. Miquella’s rune is a broken, encounter-specific item used to resist Miquella’s charm during the Promised Consort Radahn fight. It is not a permanent stat, HP, FP, or stamina blessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A guide says Malenia’s or Mohg’s rune works differently.”

Some Great Rune behavior has been affected by balance and bug-fix updates, including changes involving Malenia’s healing and Mohg’s effect duration. Launch-era descriptions and old community testing may not match the current game. If your result differs from an older guide, update the game and rely on the current in-game behavior rather than an outdated numerical claim.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Use Godrick’s Great Rune for the broadest early-game improvement, Radahn’s for a balanced percentage boost to HP, FP, and Stamina, Morgott’s for maximum HP, Rykard’s for exploration, Malenia’s for aggressive recovery, and Mohg’s when your build depends on spirits or invasions. Restore ordinary runes at their named Divine Towers, equip one at a Site of Grace, and remember that a Rune Arc blessing ends on death or when you switch runes.
