Your best setup depends on your progress, the monster you are facing, the gear you have, and whether you want to maximize raw damage or add comfort and guard-focused skills. For a current late-game starting point, one documented raw comfort build pairs Ostrak Oblivion with Arkveld γ armor; for the skills behind that approach, prioritize Focus, Weakness Exploit, Agitator, and Offensive Guard.
What to prioritize on a Great Sword
HowToPlayHub’s September 2026 guide recommends four core skills: Focus, Weakness Exploit, Agitator, and Offensive Guard. It is a guide’s recommendation, not an official Capcom build mandate. The reasoning fits the weapon’s high-commitment playstyle: Focus helps you reach True Charged Slash (TCS), while Tackle can help preserve charge opportunities. Aim at wounds in Focus Mode when you can.
- Focus: Supports reaching TCS, the payoff at the end of the Great Sword’s charge sequence.
- Weakness Exploit: Supports damage when you can connect with a monster’s vulnerable areas; prioritize accurate attacks rather than assuming every hit benefits equally.
- Agitator: A damage-focused option in the guide’s recommended core set.
- Offensive Guard: A guard-oriented damage skill that can suit a style built around using Tackle to create or maintain attack opportunities.
Great Sword attacks demand commitment, so skill levels alone do not make a build effective. The guide emphasizes positioning and choosing a damage window: avoid forcing a charged attack when the monster is likely to move or retaliate, and use openings that let you finish the sequence.
A documented raw comfort build
MHWILDSBUILD.COM lists a raw comfort setup using Ostrak Oblivion with Arkveld γ armor. Its listed skills include Offensive Guard 3, Weakness Exploit 5, and Agitator 5. Treat this as one example to adapt, not a universal best-in-slot set: the database also separates raw, comfort, elemental, and progression builds, reflecting that the right choice changes with equipment and target.

The database says its game data was verified on September 6, 2026 against Ver. 1.042. Its Great Sword S-tier label is the site’s own assessment, not an official Capcom ranking. Check the live game version and current skill descriptions before copying a set from an older guide or build page.
Choose a build for your stage and target
| Situation | Useful direction | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Still progressing through the game | Use the strongest practical gear you can assemble and prioritize the core skills as they become available. | Do not plan around late-game armor or weapons you have not unlocked. |
| Seeking a raw-damage setup | Consider the documented Ostrak Oblivion and Arkveld γ example. | It is a late-game example, not proof that it is optimal against every monster. |
| Prioritizing comfort or guard-focused play | Retain useful guard investment such as Offensive Guard where it suits your approach. | Balance damage skills against the comfort you actually need to land attacks consistently. |
| Considering elemental damage | Compare an elemental setup when the target and your available equipment make that approach worthwhile. | The available evidence does not establish a single elemental build or a target-by-target ranking. |
What late-game updates change
PlayStation Blog’s Title Update 4 preview describes additional endgame equipment systems that can change how older builds fit together. Rarity 8 Artian Weapons can be upgraded into Gogma Artian Weapons while carrying over bonuses. Gogma Artian Weapons have one randomly chosen Set Bonus Skill and one Group Skill, and their bonuses can be strengthened or rerolled. Hunters at HR 100 or above can Transcend armor to increase its maximum level; Rarity 5 and 6 armor sets also gain enhanced decoration slots. These systems broaden late-game options, so a pre-update equipment list may not reflect the choices available to a current endgame hunter.

The official game news currently lists Ver. 1.042.00.02, released August 14, 2026; its update summary says it addresses frame-rate drops in some environments. Build details can change as game updates and equipment systems evolve, so verify the current in-game skill text and version when using a guide.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is a separate expansion scheduled for 2027, according to official game news. Its announced Boost Bracer actions are not part of the current base-game build. The expansion requires the base game and completion of the 7-star assignment “Awaking From a Dream.”
