The greatest Metroidvanias make exploration feel like progress: a new ability changes how you move through an interconnected world, and familiar rooms become routes to discoveries you could not reach before. This ranking puts Super Metroid first for establishing the genre’s enduring design language, with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and modern landmarks close behind. It is an editorial order, not a universal verdict: history, map design, ability-gated progression, combat, platforming, atmosphere, and distinctiveness all count.

What makes a game a Metroidvania?

A Metroidvania is usually a 2D action-platform game set in a large, interconnected map. New items, weapons, or abilities open routes that were previously inaccessible, prompting players to revisit earlier areas with a different understanding of the world. The name combines Metroid and Castlevania, the two series that shaped the label. The British Film Institute describes the structure as interconnected areas linked by progression gates (BFI’s overview of Metroidvania games).

This list prioritizes that world structure and ability-based progression over surface similarities. A game can lean heavily on precision platforming, puzzles, RPG growth, or Souls-like combat and still qualify if exploration and newly opened routes remain central. Roguelite structure alone is not enough: the question is whether mapping and ability-gated discovery define the experience.

How this all-time ranking works

There is no single authoritative order. Metacritic sorts games by critic score, while GamesRadar+ publishes an editorial top-25; their rankings reflect different methods, not a shared consensus (Metacritic’s all-time Metroidvania scores; GamesRadar+’s list). This ranking gives the most weight to lasting design and influence, then considers exploration, progression, combat, movement, atmosphere, and how distinctly each game uses the form. Scores are one signal, not a substitute for explaining why a game matters.

#1 Best Overall
Metroid Dread - Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Join Samus Aran in the first new 2D Metroid story in 19 years
  • Explore planet ZDR’s many environments as you investigate a mysterious transmission
  • Deadly E.M.M.I. robots, research machines, pose a threat more intense than ever
  • Feel Samus’ power grow as you gain maneuvers and abilities like the new Spider Magnet
  • Power up and return to previous areas to find new paths and secrets

The greatest Metroidvanias, ranked

1. Super Metroid

Super Metroid remains the clearest expression of the genre’s central pleasure: learning a place well enough to recognize that an old obstacle has become a new opportunity. Its interconnected world, carefully paced upgrades, and minimal hand-holding make exploration feel self-directed without making progress arbitrary. The map and the player’s growing toolkit work together; the best discoveries often come from remembering a suspicious ledge or sealed passage rather than following a marker.

Its place at number one reflects its historical importance as well as its design. The BFI calls it a foundational text for the genre (BFI). Later games have expanded combat, movement, and storytelling, but few have matched its economy: nearly every ability teaches a new way to read the world.

2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Symphony of the Night brought a different flavor to the emerging form: a sprawling Gothic castle, RPG-style character growth, equipment, and a richly layered sense of place. Its exploration is less austere than Super Metroid; enemies and loot make detours rewarding in a more traditional action-RPG way. The castle’s interconnected structure and transformations in how it can be traversed made it a decisive pillar of the genre.

It ranks just below Super Metroid because its systems can make progression less tightly tuned, but its influence is impossible to separate from what players now mean by “Metroidvania.” The BFI highlights its role in shifting the series toward exploratory structure (BFI).

3. Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight turns its ruined kingdom into the main source of mystery. Hallownest is large, atmospheric, and rewarding to learn, with routes and landmarks that make getting lost part of the experience rather than a temporary inconvenience. Combat is demanding, but exploration remains the draw: upgrades and movement options gradually make more of the map reachable.

It is the strongest modern synthesis of the genre’s classic ingredients: an evocative world, challenging action, and progression that encourages players to connect distant places in their own mental map. Its popularity is also reflected in Steam’s live review aggregate, which is dynamic and should not be mistaken for a fixed quality measure (Steam store page).

4. Hollow Knight: Silksong

Silksong belongs among the all-time standouts for extending the series’ identity through a more agile protagonist and a new world built around movement, combat, and discovery. Its place here recognizes the distinctiveness of that design alongside the immense expectations it inherited from Hollow Knight. The best reason to play it is not simply that it follows a beloved game, but that it gives the familiar exploratory loop a different physical character.

Metacritic’s genre page listed it at 90 when accessed in 2026; scores and editions can change, and that figure is only one measure of critical reception (Metacritic).

5. Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the most platforming-forward game in this upper tier. Its movement is fluid and expressive, and traversal sequences make the act of crossing the world as exciting as finding what lies beyond it. Combat is more prominent than in the original Ori, but the sequel’s identity rests on the combination of polished movement, visual atmosphere, and exploration.

Players who want acrobatic platforming and a strong visual presentation may prefer it to the denser, more combat-heavy worlds elsewhere on this list. Metacritic listed it at 90 on its all-time genre page when accessed in 2026; treat that as a dated page value rather than an objective ranking (Metacritic).

6. Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread brings the series’ movement into sharp focus. Samus moves quickly, and the game’s pursuit encounters add a distinct layer of tension to its ability-gated exploration. It is a more guided, briskly paced adventure than Super Metroid, which makes it a strong entry point for players who want a modern action game rather than a deliberately opaque expedition.

Its placement reflects the quality of its movement and tension, while recognizing that its pursuit sequences and more directed progression give it a different rhythm from the genre’s most open-ended examples. GamesRadar+ includes it in its editorial selection, and Nintendo Switch is the platform context identified by the supplied sources (GamesRadar+).

7. Animal Well

Animal Well shifts the emphasis from combat to puzzles, secrets, and observation. Its world rewards players for noticing small environmental details and testing what objects can do; progression often comes from understanding a system rather than defeating a stronger enemy. That makes it one of the most distinctive recent takes on the genre, especially for players who want a quieter, more cerebral kind of exploration.

It ranks below the larger action landmarks because its appeal is more specialized, not because it uses the structure less thoughtfully. GamesRadar+’s list reflects the breadth of contemporary Metroidvania design, including games that place puzzles and discovery ahead of conventional combat (GamesRadar+).

8. Metroid Fusion

Metroid Fusion is the most overtly directed classic entry here. Its mission structure and controlled pacing make it less about wandering freely than Super Metroid, but the restrictions create a strong sense of suspense. The threat of the SA-X gives familiar corridors a menace that changes how players move through them.

Rank #2
Metroid Prime Remastered - Nintendo Switch
  • Become intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran and explore an alien planet in this critically-acclaimed first-person adventure
  • Use and upgrade abilities like the Morph Ball, Missiles, and an array of beams to survive the harsh environments and lethal creatures of the planet Tallon IV
  • Gain abilities and revisit areas to uncover the different routes and secrets hiding in a beautiful-yet-threatening interconnected world
  • Scan your surroundings to gather information about the planet’s history and the creatures that call it home or to reveal enemies’ weak points
  • Choose from multiple control options and experience revamped graphics, sound, and unlockable art in this remastered classic

It is a useful reminder that a Metroidvania need not maximize freedom at every moment. Fusion uses the series’ exploration framework to support tension and narrative momentum, making its narrower approach a meaningful variation rather than a failed attempt at open-endedness.

9. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

Aria of Sorrow refines the castle-exploration formula with a modern setting and its Tactical Soul system, which lets Soma absorb enemy abilities. That mechanic makes combat and character-building closely connected to the act of exploring: new enemies are not just obstacles but potential additions to the player’s toolkit.

It does not reinvent the map-based structure, but its pace, atmosphere, and flexible build options make it one of the strongest 2D Castlevania entries. It earns a place for executing the RPG-inflected side of the genre with unusual confidence.

10. Metroid: Zero Mission

Zero Mission reimagines the original Metroid as a more readable, more fluid adventure. It preserves the pleasure of charting an alien world while improving the clarity of movement and progression for a later audience. Its importance is partly historical: it shows how the series’ foundational ideas could be reintroduced without losing their exploratory core.

Compared with Super Metroid, it is more streamlined and less singular in atmosphere, but it is an excellent choice for players who want a compact, approachable tour through the series’ design principles.

11. Dead Cells

Dead Cells combines fast combat and precision platforming with a roguelite structure. Its runs, randomized elements, and reset loop distinguish it from the persistent, hand-authored exploration that defines the genre’s classic form. It still earns consideration because movement, unlocks, and the gradual discovery of routes give it a strong Metroidvania lineage.

This is a boundary case rather than a template for the genre. Players looking for one large world that they steadily map may prefer the higher-ranked games; players who want repeated, skill-driven action may find Dead Cells the better fit.

12. Axiom Verge

Axiom Verge is a deliberate tribute to classic science-fiction exploration, built around strange weapons, alien environments, and abilities that change how the player interacts with the world. Its retro presentation is more than an aesthetic choice: the game uses the language of older exploration games to create uncertainty and surprise.

It does not reach the same level of polish or historical importance as the genre’s pillars, but it stands out as an independent, mechanically inventive response to their legacy.

13. Blasphemous 2

Blasphemous 2 brings a grim, religiously inflected world together with demanding combat and a larger emphasis on traversal abilities. Its atmosphere is its strongest calling card, but the progression structure gives players reasons to revisit and reinterpret earlier areas. It sits near the bottom of this ranking because its combat identity can overshadow the map-and-discovery loop that defines the genre.

For players who want a darker, more punishing action game, that balance may be a strength rather than a drawback.

14. Nine Sols

Nine Sols combines exploration with demanding, parry-centered combat and a distinctive science-fantasy setting. Its action asks for close attention and precise timing, making encounters a major part of the experience rather than a brief obstacle between discoveries.

It is a strong fit for players who want combat to carry as much weight as exploration. Its lower position reflects a narrower appeal and less established historical influence than the genre’s long-running landmarks, not a lack of ambition.

Which Metroidvania should you play first?

Choose based on what you want to do most often. Availability depends on platform and region, so check the relevant storefront or platform listing before buying; the sources here do not establish current stock or regional editions.

  • For the genre’s foundations: Start with Super Metroid or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • For expansive exploration: Try Hollow Knight.
  • For fluid platforming: Choose Ori and the Will of the Wisps.
  • For puzzles and secrets over combat: Try Animal Well.
  • For modern movement and pursuit tension: Play Metroid Dread.
  • For RPG progression and enemy abilities: Choose Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.
  • For repeated runs and fast action: Try Dead Cells, keeping in mind its roguelite structure.

Why the genre still supports so many styles

The Metroidvania’s defining idea is not a particular art style, difficulty level, or combat system. It is the way a world changes as the player gains new capabilities and understanding. Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night established two influential versions of that idea; newer games continue to stretch it toward agile platforming, puzzle-led discovery, or roguelite action. That range is why an all-time ranking can make a case for clear favorites without producing one order that every player must share.
