The Green Lantern Corps is a cosmic organization whose members wield emerald power rings associated with willpower and serve under a shared oath. For a first look at its human members, start with Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz. Their origins and roles offer a better guide to the Corps than trying to rank who is strongest.
What are the Green Lantern Corps and their power rings?
The Green Lantern Corps is a cosmic organization whose members carry out their duties with emerald power rings. DC describes the rings’ energy as the green energy of willpower. That is the central idea behind the familiar green ring; the publisher’s overview does not set out a complete, continuity-independent list of abilities or limitations.
Corps members speak an oath before duty and charging the ring. DC gives the official wording as:
“In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power—Green Lantern’s light!”Quick wins for a faster PC:

DC calls this an ancient oath that every member must speak. It is the Corps’ institutional wording, rather than a line attributed to one particular Lantern.
Who are the main human Green Lanterns?
DC’s Corps overview names these six human Lanterns as notable members. They are a useful beginner cast, not a complete roster or an all-time ranking. Prominence and story details can shift between comic runs and adaptations.

| Character | Origin or starting point | Corps role or defining story angle |
|---|---|---|
| Hal Jordan | A test pilot; DC describes him as the first human Green Lantern. | A straightforward entry point to the familiar human Lantern and green-ring premise. |
| John Stewart | First introduced as an alternate to Hal. | Developed into a Corps leader; DC highlights his leadership and tactical brilliance. |
| Guy Gardner | Was close to being selected before Hal. | His selection story shows Hal was not the only candidate considered for the ring. |
| Kyle Rayner | One of DC’s notable human Lanterns. | His later White Lantern role is a continuity-specific development, not a definition of every version of Kyle. |
| Jessica Cruz | A protector of Sector 2814 who overcame fears. | Her story foregrounds fear and agency; she also had an earlier connection to the Ring of Volthoom. |
| Simon Baz | Named by DC among newer human Lanterns. | DC’s Corps overview establishes his place among notable members, but gives little biography there. |
How do Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner differ?
Hal Jordan: the familiar starting point
DC presents Hal as a test pilot and the first human Green Lantern. Readers looking for the standard green-ring premise can start with him: his profile connects an ordinary human profession to membership in a cosmic organization.
John Stewart: the alternate who became a leader
John’s first role was as an alternate to Hal, but his Corps story grew into one of leadership. DC emphasizes his tactical ability, making him a useful contrast with Hal: the characters are not simply different faces of the same role.

- Officially licensed Green Lantern figure by DC
- Bendable and posable to display your way
- This highly detailed figure is approximately 7.5” tall

- For kids, fans, and collectors ages 7+
Guy Gardner: another possible choice
DC’s account says Guy would have joined the Corps first if he had been closer to the dying Abin Sur. That detail makes his origin a reminder that Hal’s selection was not inevitable; the ring’s choice could have led to a different human Lantern.
Where do Kyle Rayner, Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz fit?
Kyle Rayner: a notable Lantern, with a later White Lantern chapter
Kyle belongs in any broad beginner overview of notable human Lanterns. DC has also connected him to the White Lantern role, but that is a later, story-specific development—not his universal or permanent status across continuities.

Jessica Cruz: a story about fear and agency
DC identifies Jessica as a protector of Sector 2814 and frames her story around overcoming fear. Her earlier connection to the Ring of Volthoom is part of that character history. The point is not that fear simply vanishes; the profile presents a character who acts and grows in relation to it.
Simon Baz: part of the newer human cast
DC includes Simon among newer human Lanterns in its Corps overview. That overview does not provide enough biography to support a fuller account here, but it establishes him as part of the broader group rather than an isolated exception.

Are any of these Lanterns the strongest?
There is no neutral ranking established by these character profiles. A DC feature argues for Kyle’s strength, but that is an editorial position, not a measured comparison that settles the question across every run. The more useful beginner comparison is each character’s origin, Corps role, and personal conflict. A character’s ring color or affiliation can also change in particular stories, so distinguish a usual role from a temporary or continuity-specific one.
What should a beginner read next?
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Sinestro’s Law is a collected edition for readers who want to see several of these characters in a particular Corps-era story. DC’s listing describes Sinestro’s Yellow Lantern Corps enforcing his version of order and names Hal Jordan, Jessica Cruz, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner among the featured characters. It is a next read focused on that run and conflict, not a complete introduction to every Green Lantern continuity.
