Either Steam or the EA app works for Apex Legends on PC. EA says your progression and unlocks carry over when you switch from the EA app to Steam, as long as Steam is linked to the EA Account that holds your progress. Steam requires that EA Account link. EA has not established that either launcher delivers better FPS, frame pacing, or input latency, so choose based on account setup and launcher preference—not an assumed performance advantage.
Steam vs. the EA app: the practical differences
Both are official PC download options for the same free-to-play game. The meaningful differences are how Steam connects to your EA Account and which launcher you prefer; the available official material does not establish a gameplay-performance advantage for either one. EA lists both options in its Apex Legends FAQ, and Steam states that an EA Account is required and must be linked to play on its store listing.
| What you are comparing | Steam | EA app |
|---|---|---|
| Account | An EA Account must be linked to Steam to play. | Uses an EA Account. |
| Switching and progress | EA says progression and unlocks carry over when moving from the EA app to Steam, provided the correct EA Account is linked. | Official PC option; progress is tied to the EA Account, not a separate launcher profile. |
| FPS display | Can use Steam’s optional FPS counter or Apex’s in-game Performance Display. | Apex’s in-game Performance Display is available. |
| FPS cap | EA documents the +fps_max <required frame rate> argument in Steam Launch Options. |
EA documents the same argument in Advanced launch options. |
| Measured FPS, frame pacing, or input latency advantage | Not established by the official sources cited here. | Not established by the official sources cited here. |
EA’s FAQ says players who previously used the EA app can try Steam and carry over their account progression and unlocks. That is support for switching clients, not for creating or transferring progress to a different EA Account.
How account linking and progression work
EA says Apex progression is permanently tied to the EA Account. Cross Progression applies to linked platform accounts; it does not let you move progress from one EA Account to another. EA also warns that unlinking an account can remove access to progress and content, including rewards and in-game purchases. Linking that platform account to another EA Account will not restore the old progress there. See EA’s Cross Progression guidance.

Check the EA Account before launching through Steam
- Sign in to the EA Account you believe holds your Apex progress.
- Open Connected Accounts in your EA Account settings. EA’s account-linking instructions explain how to review connected accounts.
- Confirm that the Steam account you plan to use is linked to that same EA Account. Steam requires the link to play.
If the wrong EA Account is linked, stop and verify the account situation before unlinking anything. EA’s stated unlinking consequences mean that changing the link is not a safe way to transfer an existing Apex profile.
Switching is different from launching both copies at once
You can switch between the EA app and Steam, but EA warns against launching Apex through both clients simultaneously with the same linked account because it can cause progression issues. Use one client at a time. EA states this warning in its Apex Legends FAQ.

Does Apex Legends run better on Steam or the EA app?
No general winner is established. EA documents FPS and ping display options and FPS-cap settings for both clients, but the official sources cited here do not provide a controlled Steam-versus-EA-app benchmark for FPS, frame pacing, or input latency. A Steam overlay counter is a way to observe FPS; its presence does not prove that gameplay is faster.
For a useful personal comparison, keep the PC, game settings, background applications, and overlays consistent, then record the same in-game FPS and ping display in repeatable conditions. Treat the result as specific to your setup, not a universal launcher ranking. EA notes that visual output can vary with hardware and monitor in its FPS guide.

Use the same FPS cap controls when comparing
EA documents +fps_max <required frame rate> for Steam Launch Options and the EA app’s Advanced launch options. Apply the equivalent setting in the client being tested rather than comparing different caps. EA cautions that changing the FPS cap can cause performance issues; its guide explains the FPS display and cap controls.
Check system load and overlays before blaming the launcher
Background programs use system resources and can contribute to slow or laggy gameplay, while multiple overlays can cause problems. If performance is inconsistent, close unnecessary background applications and avoid stacking overlays before comparing clients. EA’s PC system requirements provide hardware context, and its background-application guidance covers resource and overlay troubleshooting. Neither source demonstrates a launcher-specific performance edge.
