To expand in Grepolis, either colonise a new site with a Colony Ship or take over an existing city. Colonising is the peaceful route: it requires an Academy at level 13, a Harbor at level 10, a Colony Ship and enough culture points. Taking a city requires military preparation and depends on whether your world uses conquest by siege or conquest by revolt.
Choose how to add a city
Grepolis expansion means growing your empire city by city. The two routes are founding a city through colonising and taking over a city that already exists. Your choice depends on what you have ready, how much military risk you can accept and the rules enabled on your world.
| Route | What it requires | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Colonise | Academy level 13 to research Colony Ships, Harbor level 10 to build one, and enough culture points for another city | Peaceful, but the Colony Ship is consumed and the new city takes 24 hours to establish after arrival |
| Take over | Academy level 28 for conquest-related requirements, buildings, units and culture | Requires troops and the takeover method depends on the world’s settings |
These requirements and mechanics are described by Grepolis Customer Support. Check your own world’s settings and current in-game interface before preparing a takeover.
Found a city by colonising
Meet the prerequisites
Build your Academy to level 13 and research Colony Ships. You also need a Harbor at level 10 to build a Colony Ship, plus sufficient culture points for the additional city. A Colony Ship is used up when it founds the city.

What happens after arrival
Once the Colony Ship arrives, the city takes 24 hours to establish. According to the official colonising guide, world speed does not shorten this period, and the city is not visible on the map while it is being established. Escort troops that arrive with the ship count as support troops; they are not available for use as troops in the new city.
Starting buildings and points
A newly colonised city starts at 997 points with these buildings and levels:

Take another city
Grepolis support describes two takeover methods: conquest by siege and conquest by revolt. Which method applies is determined by your world’s settings, so there is no single takeover sequence that applies everywhere. The official overview identifies Academy level 28 for conquest-related requirements and Harbor level 10 to build Colony Ships, and says a takeover also involves buildings, units and culture.

Before committing resources, check the world’s settings and the options shown in the game. Taking an existing, potentially larger city can be attractive, but it means fighting to take and hold it; the outcome is less certain than founding a city peacefully. The official overview is “How do I take another city?”.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which expansion route fits?
- Choose colonising if you can meet its building and culture requirements, have a Colony Ship ready, and prefer to avoid fighting for the city. Plan around the 24-hour establishment period.
- Consider takeover if you have the buildings, culture and military capacity for the requirements of your world, and are prepared to take and hold a city through its enabled method.
- Verify the world rules first if you are considering conquest: siege and revolt are distinct settings, not interchangeable steps in one universal procedure.
Grepolis is described by its publisher, InnoGames, as a free, browser-based strategy game focused on cooperative play. Its official site presents expansion as a progression from city to island to ocean: Grepolis.
