GRIS is a narrative platform-adventure built around visual storytelling, music, light puzzles, and platforming rather than text-heavy exposition or combat. Its official descriptions present it as a serene journey through sorrow, with optional skill-based challenges. Whether that suits you depends on whether you want an art-led, reflective experience more than a demanding action game.

What kind of game is GRIS?

Developed by Nomada Studio and published by Devolver Digital, GRIS follows a hopeful young woman coping with a painful experience. Nintendo describes her as “a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life.” The publisher says the character’s journey through sorrow is reflected in her dress and the changing world, while abilities granted by the dress help her move through it. Nintendo’s US listing and Devolver Digital’s game page describe this premise.

The publisher characterizes the experience as serene, with meticulous art, detailed animation, and an original score. It also describes light puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional skill-based challenges as the world opens up. Those are the publisher’s descriptions, not a substitute for a hands-on assessment of how the game feels to play.

Is GRIS worth playing?

GRIS is worth considering if you’re drawn to a story communicated through images, music, and changes in the environment, and you’re comfortable with a mix of light puzzles and platforming. The official descriptions foreground mood and presentation rather than combat or text-driven storytelling. That makes it a clearer fit for players seeking a reflective, visually led journey than for someone choosing a game primarily for deep mechanical complexity.

#1 Best Overall
Gris - Switch
  • A serene and evocative narrative experience. GRIS is a serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death. Players will explore a meticulous designed world brought to life with delicate art, detailed animation, and an elegant original score. Through the game light puzzles, platforming sequences, and optional skill-based challenges will reveal themselves as more of GRIS’s world becomes accessible
  • GRIS is an experience with almost no text, only simple control reminders illustrated through universal icons. The game can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of their spoken language

There is an important limit to that recommendation: the official material establishes the game’s intended character, but it does not establish a measured playtime, performance comparison, or independent critical verdict. Your interest in its artistic approach and the feel of its platforming are the most useful factors for deciding whether it is for you.

Is GRIS difficult?

Nintendo’s official listing calls GRIS “a serene and evocative experience, free of danger, frustration or death.” The publisher likewise describes light puzzles and optional skill-based challenges. These statements suggest that the game is not framed as a punishing, combat-focused platformer, but they are promotional descriptions rather than an independent difficulty assessment. The optional challenges may still appeal to players who want a more demanding test.

How much reading does GRIS involve?

PlayStation describes GRIS as “an experience with almost no text, only simple control reminders illustrated through universal icons.” That indicates little reliance on written dialogue or exposition, but it is not a guarantee of accessibility for every player or of support for any particular access need. Check the relevant platform’s store page for current language and accessibility details if those affect your decision.
