There is no single best armor set for every Grounded build. For a tank, Roly Poly is the clearest pick; critical-hit players should look at Assassin’s, ranged players at Antlion, and poison or speed builds at Widow. This is an editorial ranking for the original Grounded, not Grounded 2—and “ranked” does not mean Obsidian officially endorsed the order.
How this ranking works
The order weighs set-bonus usefulness, fit with a common playstyle, defensive value against stamina costs, and when a player can reasonably obtain the set. It does not treat raw defense as the only measure: an offensive set can be the better choice if its effects support how you fight.

A full matching set is important when you want its set bonus. Mixing armor pieces can still make sense for their individual effects, but it gives up the matching-set benefit. Armor weight also affects stamina: Obsidian’s Hot and Hazy update notes say light armor reduces the stamina-regeneration delay, medium armor leaves it unchanged, and heavy armor increases it.
Best armor in Grounded by build
- Tank: Roly Poly
- Critical-hit damage: Assassin’s
- Ranged combat: Antlion
- Poison and speed: Widow
- Early-game tanking: Acorn
These are role-based recommendations, not a universal winner. The current build-focused guide from GamesOMG also recommends those sets for these roles; the top-ten order below is this article’s editorial ranking.

The 10 best armor sets in Grounded
1. Roly Poly — best for tanking
Roly Poly earns the top spot for players who want a defensive, enemy-focused role. It is the strongest fit here for holding attention and surviving close-range pressure, rather than maximizing damage or mobility. Choose it when your build and team benefit from a durable front line; its heavy-weight stamina tradeoff is less attractive if frequent dodging is central to your approach.
2. Assassin’s — best for critical-hit builds
Assassin’s is the pick for players building around critical hits. Its value depends on a playstyle that can make reliable use of crit-focused effects, so it is a less natural choice for a straightforward defensive build. A current build guide identifies it as a critical-damage option; check the set’s current in-game effect descriptions before planning around a specific trigger.
3. Widow — best for poison and speed
Widow suits players who want poison-oriented pressure and a faster combat rhythm. Its set bonus has changed: Obsidian’s Update 1.3 notes say Black Widow’s bonus changed from movement speed on kill to trickle regeneration plus increased attack speed on kill. That patch history makes older descriptions unreliable; consult the current in-game description rather than relying on a pre-update guide.
4. Antlion — best for ranged combat
Antlion is the clearest ranged choice. Obsidian’s Hot and Hazy notes describe its set bonus as protection from the sandbox sizzle effect and faster reloads with bows and crossbows. Those benefits are especially relevant when fighting at range in the sandbox, though the set is less specifically tailored to melee or tanking builds.
5. Acorn — best early tank option
Acorn is a practical early-game choice for players who want to lean into durability before later specialist sets become options. Its appeal is accessibility and a tank-oriented role, not a claim that it outperforms late-game armor. Check its current set description in game for the precise effects available in your version.
6. Ladybug — defensive option for sustained fights
Ladybug is worth considering for defensive play and block sustain. It can suit players who prefer to absorb pressure and keep fighting rather than depend on mobility or specialized damage effects. Its precise current mechanics are not established by the cited official update notes, so verify the in-game description before building around a particular effect.
7. Mother Demon — late-game poison candidate
Mother Demon is a late-game option for poison-oriented play. Obsidian’s Update 1.3 notes say it received increased damage resistance and durability and became heavy armor. That makes its defensive profile more substantial, but the heavy weight also comes with a longer stamina-regeneration delay. Confirm the current set bonus in game before treating it as a particular poison build’s best choice.
8. Black Ant — utility and retaliation
Black Ant offers a more unusual mix of utility and retaliation. Obsidian’s Hot and Hazy notes describe its set bonus as building extra stun with all attacks and reflecting part of the damage back to attackers. Update 1.3 separately doubled the damage from Black Ant Pincushion thorns. The latter is a patch-specific adjustment, not a reason to assume every Black Ant build excels in every fight.

9. Koi Scale — best for parry-focused play
Koi Scale is a candidate for players whose combat plan depends on parrying. That focus can make it a better fit than a general defensive set for a player who consistently times blocks well, but less useful if you mainly avoid attacks or trade hits. Check the current in-game set bonus before committing to exact mechanics.
10. Black Ox — charged attacks and stun
Black Ox rounds out the list as a charged-attack and stun-oriented option. It is most relevant to players who build around those combat patterns rather than ranged damage, poison, or pure tanking. Because exact values and constraints are not established in the cited sources, use the current in-game armor description to decide whether its effects match your weapon and build.

Armor weight is a combat tradeoff, not a simple defense ranking. Obsidian’s Hot and Hazy notes establish the stamina-regeneration effect by class: light armor decreases the delay, medium armor does not change it, and heavy armor increases it. In practice, that favors considering light armor for dodge-heavy, critical-hit, or ranged play and heavy armor for a player willing to trade stamina recovery for a tanking role. The exact class effects are official; specific build recommendations are editorial guidance.
Armor bonuses can change with updates
Do not assume an old tier list still describes the current game. Obsidian’s Update 1.3 notes document changes to Black Ant Pincushion, Mother Demon, Moldy Matriarch, and Black Widow armor. For example, the notes say Mother Demon and Moldy Matriarch gained damage resistance and durability and became heavy armor; Moldy Matriarch’s Dynamighty proc chance doubled; and Black Widow’s set bonus changed to trickle regeneration plus increased attack speed on kill.
Armor is also part of progression. Obsidian’s 1.0 release documentation describes crafting armor plating and a revised armor-upgrade process. Upgrade options and exact set effects should be checked against the game version you are playing.
