Grounded 2 Koi Fish Scales: Every Location, Drop Method, Respawn Timer, and Crafting Use

By VGSources Team 10 min read

In Grounded 2, the reported Koi Fish Scale locations are Skunk Pond, Gnarly Bark, the Bridge, and the seabed around the Monitoring Station. You can also obtain scales by attacking the named koi Calico, Dagon, Oriole, and Sunny; the community item page reports a 10% chance per hit. Harvested scales are reported to return after three in-game days.

The locations, drop rate, respawn period, and recipes below come from an unofficial Grounded 2 community item page, while the armor tier comes from a separate unofficial database. Updates can change any of these details, so use the current in-game map, resource nodes, creature behavior, and crafting interface as the final authority.

Where to find Koi Fish Scales in Grounded 2

The current community listing names four areas. They cover both shoreline or structure-based searches and the underwater seabed around the Monitoring Station.

Location What the listing identifies How to use the information
Skunk Pond Listed as a Koi Fish Scale location and the area most directly associated with koi activity. Search the pond and its accessible edges first, then switch to attacking named koi if you need additional scales.
Gnarly Bark Listed as a separate scale location. Check the area for collectible scales before leaving; do not assume every listed spot uses the same underwater route.
The Bridge Listed as a scale location in its own right. Include the bridge in a circuit when you are already traveling between pond-side objectives.
Monitoring Station seabed The seabed around the Monitoring Station is listed as an underwater location. Bring the diving equipment and air-management setup you normally use for extended underwater exploration.

The item page does not provide measured travel times, a guaranteed number of scales per area, or a tested ranking of these routes. Treat the four names as search locations rather than a promise that one route is always fastest or most productive. World-state changes, your equipment, and the current game version can all affect how practical a location feels.

Skunk Pond

Skunk Pond is the natural starting point for most players because the item listing places scales there and separately identifies koi as a source. Work around the pond methodically instead of swimming randomly: inspect reachable surfaces and resource spots, note anything you have already collected, and keep an eye on koi movement. If you are using the creature-drop method, stay close enough to maintain a safe attack position without letting the fish force you into an extended underwater chase.

Gnarly Bark

Gnarly Bark is easy to overlook if your search is limited to the main pond. Add it to a planned collection loop, particularly when another objective already sends you through the area. The available evidence confirms the location name but does not establish a fixed node count or a guaranteed spawn pattern, so mark the places where you actually find scales and revisit them after the reported timer has elapsed.

The Bridge

The Bridge is another listed location and can be folded into a broader travel route. Check both sides of the structure and any accessible lower surfaces rather than assuming that “Bridge” means a single point on the walkway. Because no route-time or yield test is documented, choose the Bridge for convenience and safety rather than an unverified claim that it outperforms the pond.

Monitoring Station seabed

The seabed around the Monitoring Station is the explicitly underwater entry in the location list. It is therefore the location most sensitive to diving preparation, air limits, visibility, and hostile wildlife. Plan your descent and return before collecting anything. If the item is not visible, do not conclude that the location is invalid: the page may be describing a resource that has already been collected, a spawn that has not returned, or a spot whose appearance has changed in a later build.

How to collect scales from named koi

The community item page names four koi—Calico, Dagon, Oriole, and Sunny—as scale sources. It reports a 10% chance per hit when attacking those koi. That is a wiki-reported game figure, not an independently tested measurement, and it should not be read as a guarantee that every tenth hit produces a scale.

  1. Locate a named koi. Use the pond and underwater areas associated with the locations above. Confirm the fish’s name if the game displays it; the reported source list is specific to Calico, Dagon, Oriole, and Sunny.
  2. Prepare an escape route. Fight where you can reach air, solid footing, or a safe surface. Underwater combat can turn a short farming attempt into an emergency if you run out of breathing time or lose sight of your exit.
  3. Attack and watch the result. The reported chance is applied per hit, so one long fight can produce a scale—or none. Avoid assuming that damage dealt, time spent, or a particular weapon guarantees a drop.
  4. Collect the scale immediately. Confirm that it entered your inventory before moving to another target. If no item appears, continue only if the fight remains safe; the 10% figure allows for several unsuccessful hits in a row.
  5. Repeat with the other named koi or a listed location. Combining creature drops with area searches gives you more than one way to reach a crafting target without relying on an unverified route ranking.

At a simple probability level, a 10% per-hit rate corresponds to an average of about ten hits for one drop if each hit is treated as an independent attempt. That is an expectation, not a schedule: several hits can fail consecutively, and a scale can appear on the first hit. The source does not document whether every hit is truly independent, whether special attacks alter the chance, or whether difficulty and patches change it.

Do Koi Fish Scales respawn?

The same unofficial item page reports that harvested scales respawn after three in-game days. This is the current community-wiki claim, not an official mechanic description or a hands-on measurement.

Using the reported three-day timer

  1. Collect the scale from a listed location and record the in-game day and approximate time.
  2. Continue other activities rather than repeatedly checking the same empty spot. The reported interval is measured in game days, not real-world hours.
  3. After three in-game days have passed, return to the location and inspect the same area again.
  4. If nothing has returned, verify that the game has advanced the day normally, that the item was actually harvested, and that an update has not changed the behavior.

The source does not state whether the timer starts at collection, at the next day boundary, or independently for each node. It also does not establish whether sleeping, multiplayer activity, loading a save, or leaving the region affects the timer. For that reason, use three days as a planning estimate rather than a guaranteed reset moment.

Koi Fish Scale crafting recipes

Scales matter because they are components for the Koi Scale armor pieces and the Koi Scale Shield. The listed scale requirements are below. Quantities for several non-scale ingredients are not specified in the available item data; check the in-game crafting screen for the complete current recipe.

Item Reported scale cost Other listed ingredients Reported armor tier
Koi Scale Helmet 2 Koi Fish Scales Gill Tube, Wax, Silk Rope; quantities not stated in the item listing Tier 2 armor classification from an unofficial armor database
Koi Scale Chestplate 5 Koi Fish Scales Eelgrass Strand, Horsetail Stem, Sunken Bone; quantities not stated in the item listing Tier 2 armor classification from an unofficial armor database
Koi Scale Greaves 3 Koi Fish Scales Fin Flops, Horsetail Stem, Sunken Bone; quantities not stated in the item listing Tier 2 armor classification from an unofficial armor database
Koi Scale Shield 3 Koi Fish Scales 2 Sunken Bone and 2 Eelgrass Strand Shield; no armor-tier classification stated

Total scales for each goal

  • Helmet: 2 scales.
  • Chestplate: 5 scales.
  • Greaves: 3 scales.
  • Complete listed armor set: 10 scales total.
  • Shield: 3 scales.
  • Armor set plus shield: 13 scales total.

The arithmetic above uses only the reported scale costs. It does not include the other materials, whose exact quantities can change and should be read from your current crafting interface.

Which item should you craft first?

If your immediate aim is protection across the full armor set, the chestplate is the largest single scale investment at five, followed by greaves at three and the helmet at two. If you want a defensive off-hand option before completing armor, the shield also costs three scales. There is no documented performance test in the available sources that proves one piece is more efficient to obtain or stronger in a particular combat scenario, so choose according to the slot you need and the non-scale materials you already possess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the armor database is unofficial and the recipes are community-listed, treat the Tier 2 label as a classification aid rather than a promise that every statistic or set effect is unchanged. Compare the actual protection, bonuses, durability, and crafting requirements shown in your build.

Planning an efficient collection loop without inventing a route ranking

No source reviewed supplies timed runs, measured yields, or a statistically valid comparison between Skunk Pond, Gnarly Bark, the Bridge, and the Monitoring Station seabed. You can still make a practical loop by reducing backtracking and matching each stop to another task.

  1. Start with the nearest accessible listing. If you are already near Skunk Pond, search it before making a dedicated cross-map trip.
  2. Add a nearby secondary objective. Visit Gnarly Bark or the Bridge when a quest, material run, or base trip already passes that way.
  3. Reserve the seabed for prepared dives. Make the Monitoring Station stop when your diving equipment, air supply, and inventory space support a longer underwater excursion.
  4. Use named koi as a parallel source. While moving through pond areas, attack Calico, Dagon, Oriole, or Sunny only when you can maintain a safe combat position.
  5. Record your own results. Note the location, the number of scales collected, and the in-game date. This gives you a personal route plan without presenting an unverified community listing as a measured benchmark.

Underwater preparation for the Monitoring Station seabed

Grounded 2’s underwater context is newer than the original game’s pond content. Obsidian’s “Into the Abyss” announcement, dated August 11, 2026, describes expanded underwater exploration, new locations, diving equipment, and underwater bases. Its framing line—“Every dive rewards curiosity, but it also demands preparation.”—fits scale collection especially well: a resource run can fail because of air management or navigation even when the scale itself is easy to collect.

  • Check diving equipment before departure. Do not treat the Monitoring Station seabed as a shallow-water stop.
  • Carry a clear return plan. Identify the surface, air source, or safe route before you begin harvesting.
  • Leave inventory space. A full inventory can prevent a successful pickup and force a second dive.
  • Watch hostile creatures and visibility. A scale run is optional; retreat when the fight or navigation risk exceeds the value of another attempt.
  • Confirm the item in your inventory. Underwater visual clutter can make it easy to mistake an interaction for a completed collection.

Grounded 2 version and platform context

The official Grounded 2 site identifies the game as Early Access on Steam and PlayStation 5, and as Game Preview on Xbox platforms. Availability and feature behavior can differ by platform build, so use the version displayed by your game when checking a recipe or spawn.

Obsidian’s official patch 0.5.1 announcement is dated September 11, 2026 and says the patch was available on Steam, Xbox Series S|X, Xbox PC, and PS5. One listed fix addresses a problem in which the Koi Fish could occasionally charge indefinitely. That note concerns fish behavior; it does not confirm the four scale locations, the 10% drop chance, the three-day respawn report, or any recipe change.

Do not use original Grounded directions for Grounded 2

The original Grounded game also contained a Koi Fish Scale material, but its map, pond layout, progression, and directions are historical information for that game. The original game’s update material cannot be used as proof that a location or route works in Grounded 2. Follow Grounded 2’s own map and current in-game markers, and verify community instructions against your build.

Troubleshooting common collection problems

A listed location has no scale

Check whether you collected it earlier, wait through the reported three in-game days, and return to the same area. If it remains absent, inspect nearby surfaces and underwater sections rather than a single coordinate. The community listing does not define an exact node layout, and a later update may have moved or replaced a resource.

A named koi never drops a scale

The reported rate is 10% per hit, so failure across several hits is possible. Confirm that the target is Calico, Dagon, Oriole, or Sunny, then continue only while the encounter is safe. If the fish is charging indefinitely, update to a build containing the official 0.5.1 fix or later; that patch note addresses the behavior problem but does not promise a drop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Three days have passed but nothing respawned

Recheck that three in-game days—not three real-time days—elapsed after collection. The source does not explain boundary timing or save-state behavior, so test after another normal day cycle and verify the current build. If the game still differs from the listing, trust the live game over the community timer.

The crafting screen shows different ingredients

Recipes can change during Early Access and Game Preview. Use the current crafting interface for the authoritative quantities, then treat the community table as a planning reference for the reported scale costs. Do not farm a fixed number of non-scale materials based solely on an older listing.

The Monitoring Station dive is too risky

Postpone the seabed route until your diving equipment and air-management plan are ready. You can pursue the other listed locations and named-koi drops first; no source establishes that the Monitoring Station is mandatory or that it yields more scales.

Quick collection checklist

  • Search Skunk Pond, Gnarly Bark, the Bridge, and the Monitoring Station seabed.
  • Look for Calico, Dagon, Oriole, and Sunny as reported creature sources.
  • Plan around the community-reported 10% chance per hit, not a guaranteed drop schedule.
  • Revisit harvested spots after the reported three in-game days.
  • Reserve 2 scales for the helmet, 5 for the chestplate, 3 for greaves, and 3 for the shield.
  • Expect 10 scales for the listed armor set or 13 for armor plus shield.
  • Check current recipes and behavior in your game, especially after updates.
