If Grounded multiplayer or Xbox Live sign-in is failing, first check which platform each player uses and which mode you’re trying to play. Cross-play, Shared Worlds and Playgrounds require a linked Microsoft/Xbox account; ordinary multiplayer between Steam friends does not, as long as everyone is in Steam Native state. The account and service requirements differ by mode, so a subscription or sign-in step that applies to one session may not apply to another.
Check the mode and platform requirements first
| Session type | Microsoft/Xbox account | Other requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-platform play | Required | Each player needs the online multiplayer service subscription required by their platform. Obsidian recommends that a non-Nintendo player host when the group spans platforms. |
| Shared Worlds or Playgrounds | Required | Use the Microsoft account-linking flow. The cross-platform guidance also specifies the relevant platform online-service subscription for cross-platform multiplayer. |
| Standard multiplayer among Steam friends | Not required under Grounded patch 1.4.5 | All players must be in the same Steam Native state to see and join one another. |
Obsidian’s Grounded cross-platform guidance explains the account and platform-service requirements; its patch 1.4.5 announcement says Steam players no longer need a Microsoft account for standard multiplayer. These are mode-specific requirements, not proof that purchasing a subscription will fix an unrelated authentication error.
Fix a cross-play or Microsoft account sign-in problem
- Enable Crossplay. In Grounded, open Options and turn on the Crossplay setting.
- Complete account linking. Follow the in-game Microsoft account linking steps. Obsidian says only one Microsoft/Xbox account can be linked to the game, so make sure the intended account is the one attached.
- Check the main menu. Confirm that your Xbox Gamertag appears there. If it does not, the account-linking flow may not have completed as expected.
- Check the platform service requirement. For cross-platform multiplayer, each player needs the online multiplayer service subscription required by their platform. This is an eligibility requirement, not a universal remedy for sign-in failures.
Obsidian’s cross-platform instructions state that “you can only link one Microsoft/Xbox account to the game,” and describe enabling cross-play and checking the Gamertag at the main menu.
If you are playing with Steam friends only
For ordinary multiplayer between Steam friends, Grounded patch 1.4.5 removed the Microsoft-account sign-in requirement. Check that every player is in the same Steam Native state; players in different states may not see or join each other. This exception does not apply to Crossplay, Shared Worlds or Playgrounds, which still require a Microsoft account.

When the problem is hosting or joining
- Confirm each person’s platform and the intended mode before troubleshooting sign-in.
- For a mixed-platform group, have a non-Nintendo player host, as Obsidian’s cross-platform guidance recommends.
- Identify where the failure happens: signing in, seeing the host, sending or receiving an invite, hosting, or joining. These are distinct failure points.
- Do not assume an old reported issue is the cause. Grounded’s official issue tracker includes historical bugs involving account provisioning, multiplayer disconnects or lag, invite visibility, and hosting or joining; entries marked fixed document past issues, not a current incident.
How to get help if the checks do not work
Check current official announcements or service-status information before treating an error as an outage. The available official Grounded guidance and historical issue entries do not establish whether Xbox Network or Grounded services are affected right now.
For further help, use the Grounded forums or Obsidian’s technical support contact route. Obsidian directs users with unresolved technical problems to email [email protected] with detailed information. Include the platforms involved, the mode, whether the host appears, the exact error message, and a screenshot if available. That information helps describe the problem; it is not a guaranteed fix.
