Grow a Garden, a free Roblox experience, was reported to have reached five million concurrent players on May 17, 2025. That topped Steam’s then-record for a single game—but it did not exceed the total number of people playing across Steam. Roblox later reported much higher peaks for both the experience and its platform.
Which Roblox game reached five million players?
It was Grow a Garden, a gardening and farming experience on Roblox. Roblox says the experience launched on March 25, 2025. A June 19 report by Gaming News says it reached five million concurrent players on May 17; Roblox’s later official accounts document larger peaks, but do not confirm that exact May date and figure.
“Concurrent” means playing at the same time. The five-million figure is therefore a reported simultaneous-player milestone, not the number of people who played the game over a day or its total audience.
Did it have more players than any game on Steam?
In the single-game sense, yes—according to the reported comparison at the time. In May 2025, PC Gamer identified PUBG’s 3.26 million concurrent players as Steam’s then-record for one game. Five million is higher than that figure.

That is not the same as beating Steam’s total concurrent users. PC Gamer reported that on the same day Grow a Garden peaked at 8.9 million players, Steam had 11.5 million users across all games. The Roblox experience was below Steam’s platform-wide total.
| Measure | Reported count | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Grow a Garden milestone, May 17, 2025 | 5 million (Gaming News, secondary reporting) | Players in one Roblox experience at once |
| Grow a Garden later May 2025 peak | 8.9 million (PC Gamer) | Players in one Roblox experience at once |
| Steam total on the day of the 8.9 million report | 11.5 million (PC Gamer) | Users across all Steam games |
| Steam’s then-record single-game peak | 3.26 million for PUBG (PC Gamer) | Players in one Steam game |
The fairest comparison is one experience against one game, with dates and peak figures made clear. Comparing one Roblox experience with Steam’s entire platform answers a different question.

What happened after the five-million milestone?
The five-million mark was an early point in a rapid rise. Roblox’s June 24, 2025 engineering article says Grow a Garden reached 21.6 million simultaneous players. Roblox’s Q2 2025 shareholder letter says the experience set a concurrent-player world record in June and surpassed it in July with nearly 22 million users. A Roblox retrospective published in March 2026 describes it as exceeding 21 million within three months, after surpassing the previous single-experience peak of 2.8 million.
Roblox attributed part of the experience’s rise to AI-driven discovery and curated “Today’s Picks” in its shareholder letter. That is the company’s explanation, not independent proof that those features alone caused the growth.
The scale extended beyond one game: Roblox reported platform-wide peak concurrency rising from 13.9 million in April 2025 to 30.6 million in June. Its 2025 year-in-review later said Steal a Brainrot exceeded 25 million concurrent players in September, while Roblox as a whole reached 45 million users playing together on one Saturday in August. These are historical figures, not current October 2026 player counts.

The game’s appeal was often described as relaxed and accessible. In an Associated Press report, Common Sense Media editorial director Betsy Bozdech said: “The word I keep hearing used over and over to describe this particular game is that it’s chill, which is just such a nice alternative.” That comment offers context for its appeal; it does not establish a single cause for its record growth.

Roblox’s account points to recommendation and discovery features as part of the story, while the available figures show how quickly the audience expanded. Neither a player-count record nor a reported peak, by itself, explains why individual players chose to join.
